in oregon, we're joined by julia olson, chief legal counsel and executive director with our children'sia, let's begin with you. talk about the significance of this case and why montana? >> good morning. this is an historic decision. it is the first of its kind ever in u.s. history. why montana? montana is one of the states in our country that has had laws on the books that requires its promote fossil fuel energy and fossil fuel field development in a time when we are in a climate emergency. it also requires them to ignore the consequences of that. the ways in which greenhouse gas emissions fuel the climate crisis. these young people use the montana constitution, which protects not just the right to a clean and healthy environment, but the right to dignity, health, and safety and happiness and equal protection of the law. they sued the state challenging these laws and their implementation. in june, had a seven-day trial and we just won this historic ruling say that legal regime and the conduct under it is unconstitutional. a are the laws automatically struck down? >> they are. not only

julia olson is the chief legal counsel for our children's trust, the organization young people in pendingk about how are they and that generation, including you, going to judge my generation when it comes to climate change, especially the baby boomers who, between you and me, i think are mainly responsible. but today's ruling may set legal precedent for similar cases in other states. it won't, however, stop the mining or the burning of fossil fuels in montana. what is your reaction to the ruling? >> well, first of all, i'm really excited about the ruling. it's been a long time coming. we've waited three years, being part of this case and we've known about human-caused climate change for at least half a century. getting a ruling that listens to or stories and our voices and the best available science is just really important. yeah. all we can do is the actions that are in our control moving forward. whether that's as individuals or states, we can take responsibility, and all generations are involved in that. >> ricky, the office of montana's attorney general said this ruling is absurd but
