. >> democratic strategist julian epstein and republican strategist alex cohen join us. he states in "the washington post" failure to gain the initiative and reverse insurtingent momentum in the near term while afghan capacity matures risks an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible. alex, do we need more troops and, if so, how many more? >> well, that's clearly what the military is asking for is more troops and the administration has had this report now for three weeks and i think it's curious we're just finding out about it now. the president has kept saying, you know, he has kept kicking the can down the road on afghanistan. all summer, he virtually ignored the war and went months without speaking about it and now when the elections didn't go well there the military saying they need more commanders. he is finding he doesn't have political support in congress to deliver the additional troops with the long-term commitment needed there. i would argue one of his own makings since he ignored the war so long this summer. >> let me play another sound bit
