julianna tatelbaum. stocks moved last week with the announcement of cease-fire in europe.r indexes in green for the month for the first time this year? >> well, jon, many would beg to differ with that comment but as to the markets it looks like potentially yes. the u.s. markets continue to the march higher which is pretty remarkable given that we've got this war raging on in eastern europe and the federal reserve has begun raising interest rates for the first time since 2018. for the month, to day, dow up 4%. s&p 500 up nearly 6%. and tech-heavy nasdaq up more than 6% for the month of march so far. as for trade this morning, we are seeing a bit of negativity in europe. we've got european stocks pulling back on news that germany is warning of a possible natural gas emergency. and suggesting that consumers may have to ration gas as they prepare for severe disruption for energy supply coming from russia. at the same time, u.s. futures pointing to a pullback this morning. some jitters remain but overall for the month of march a positive run. >> labor department report shows a

and for that, let's bring in cnbc's julianna tatelbaum joining us live from london.s. stocks hit the lows of the day after the federal reserve chair jerome powell vowed touch action to control what we know to be surging inflation. what's your sense of how the markets are going to react? >> well, one thing's for sure, and that is that investors are hanging on jerome powell's every word and once again he had markets moving yesterday. the key comment here is inflation is much too high and the fed will take necessary steps to address. it and investors seemed to interpret those comments as meaning we could see interest rate hikes come faster than previously expected and we did see u.s. stocks take a turn and end the day lower. he vowed to take tough action because he thinks if inflation is able to run further, and run harder, then it could jeopardize the economy. investors in particular are worried about the impact of higher interest rates on the housing mark, so it's a difficult balance to strike. in terms of trade this morning, it looks as though u.s. futures are pointi
