what's their sense of what's going on, julie? >> reporter: well, boy, there have been a lot of emotions. it has been a hand-wringing type of night for mark warner supporters. they are still hanging in here. no word yet from when we might hear from the incumbent senator, but nobody expected a political scare like this one. long, one of virginia's most popular politicians thought this might be a close race. polls indicated that in recent days. but for the first few hours after the returns came in, mark warner was trailing. finally, at 10:30, the folks in this room had something to cheer. mark warner took a slight lead that at this hour has grown to about 19,000 votes. what's made the difference tonight for the democratic senator, fairfax county. they came in big for mark warner. he won in fairfax county by some 53,000 votes, also won in prince william county. those two voting blocks very crucial to statewide victory. the two men are running neck and neck in louden county. we're hearing the word re-count being uttered. but as the ga

julie? >> reporter: just about inside of the potomac mills mall.aid, we understand there is an enormous police presence and just got new information from the county police on the scene. here's what they tell us about what happened. at about 4:30 this afternoon, a man entered the walmart. that's kind of on the back side of the potomac mills mall. he approached the jewelry counter with a hammer in each hand. he then began breaking up the glass on the jewelry counter. there happened to be an off-duty law enforcement officer in the walmart at that time that confronted the man. the man fled from the store, but the off-duty officer pursued him into the parking lot. the officer then confronted the man again. gave him some commands. when the man did not comply, that's when prince william county police say this off-duty officer shot the man. we understand that that man has now been flown to an area hospital for treatment. we don't know anything about his condition and naturally, many prince william police units responding to that scene to investigate what h
