starting with julie carey live in alexandria. julie? >> reporter: well, the focus of the investigation down the re the exact number of bullets and their trajectories. and tonight the fbi is giving us a look at the types of guns that james hodgkinson used. a handgun and a rifle that looked like this. now, they also continued to gather information on the gunman and that is going to include an interview with a manager of a gas station, just down the street from the crime scene. chris dobberman said it started out as small talk, a man with a white van came in asking for help putting air in his tires. but when the station manager mentioned he had to work six days a week, the man exploded. >> he lost it. he went from a normal conversation to, have you seen what that [ bleep ] trump has done to our taxes! he just went off. it was a little abnormal the way he flipped out about trump, but he didn't say he was going to hurt anybody. >> reporter: alarmed, dobberman sa man calmed down, said thanks, and left. he has since learned it was james hodgki

. >> julie carey says one local man got a very clear view of hodgkinson's hatred towards some politicians. >> reporter: this gas station at the corner just about two blocks from the baseball field where james hodgkinson turned his weapon on a congressional baseball practice on wednesday. right outside that garage, that was where he had one of his final and most memorable interactions. it was 10:00 in the morning, the day before the shooting. hodge kinson came to get air in his tires, and he asked for help. he said he was returning to illinois soon. dobberman mentioned he had to work six days a week. he said hodgkinson exploded. >> he lost it. he said, have you seen what that [ bleep ] trump has done to our taxes! he just went off. he got very, i felt a lot of passion from the guy about his hatred. it was abnormal the way he flipped out, but he didn't say he was going to hurt anybody. >> reporter: meantime, residents wondering when this area around the ballpark will re-open. there are little league games scheduled this weekend. the city has said that any ymca member ks work out at city rec

our northern virginia bur eau chief julie carey is live from del ray. >> dozens of fbi investigators just covering this area. they just headed home a short while ago. the fbi warning tonight that they may keep this area closed off and continue this intense investigation through the weekend. fbi investigators seem to be leaving no area of simpson field untouched. after james hodgkinson ambushed a congressional baseball practice. the barrage of gunfire intense. he wounded four before he was killed by officers. investigators say hodgkinson was armed with a handgun and assault rifle. both it appears legally purchased. they also processed the white van parked in the ymca parking lot. that's where hodgkinson has been living for the last few months. sleeping there and using showers and tvs in the ymca. inside the van they found a camera, cell phone and computer that they will analyze. already via social media they saw hodgkinson was angry with president trump and republicans. this ymca member recalls seeing hodgkinson in the gym most mornings, using an exercise bike, not really to work out

julie carey is in fairfax tonight with four things to watch for in tonight's primary.hat do you have your eye on? >> reporter: hey, leon, obviously the headline tonight oi nomination for governor and lieutenant governor in both parties. but there could be other interesting trends. here are four things i'm keeping my eye on tonight. first of all, will we see a trump effect? will democratic voters who might not normally turn out for a primary be especially motivated because of their anger over president trump's policies. and throughout the campaign, democrats have claimed their supporters are newly energized because of the november election. will that result in any sort of record for virginia primary turn-out at least on the democratic side. and if the democratic votes don't exceed gop ballots, what does that say about whether activism is going to equal votes? it will also be interesting to see if virginia voters in both parties end up supporting the more establishment candidates, northam and gillespie, over the candidates seen as more insurgent in both parties like perr

julie carey was at that press conference. she joins us live. >> reporter: this is what fbi investigators are wanting to spotlight. they're putting this wanted information on social media circulating it through the community. they want to find out as much as possible about james hodgkinson. now as news4 was first to reported to we know he's been in the alexandria community for some months. i even had a benign interaction with him of mine own a couple weeks ago at the alexandria ymca that's just across from this ballpark. we learned at the briefing last hour that the his home in belleville, illinois in march and traveled here to alexandria. they don't know yet whether he made any stops along the way. we've learned he come to the ymca in the morning between 7:00 and 8:00 not really to work out but to take a shower there and then he would usually set up his laptop at the tables in the lobby. the former mayor bill yule is one who had repeated conversations with hodgkinson at the ymca even sharing information with him about a possi
