joining me now is julie carey. nobody knows politics in virginia better than julie carey. let's talk about the campaign you've been covering from the very beginning. what do gillespie and northam need to do at this point, who do they need to target? >> it's always they need to target everybody tonight because they need to get voters focused on this race. virginia traditionally kind of refolk uses attention late. but specifically there is still a big pocket of undecided voters. we've seen it in the polls that have come out in the last 15 days, 10 to 15%. they need to make a connection to those voters, get them to the polls. and in that pool there is a lot at stake for ralph northam. a bigger percentage of those undecideds identify as democrats. there are a lot of african americans who say they are undecided. ralph northam needs to get those people to the polls i >> you know, we were talking in the break awhile ago about is virginia a purple state, is it about to turn blue? there is a lot at stake for republicans in the commonwealth and it's been a while since mcdonald won a

that's where we find news 4's northern virginia bureau chief julie carey. is an awful story. >> reporter: it sure is. pat and leon, let me give you a sense of where we are. that is busy route 1 right there. this is the apartment over here where this deadly that second story window there. that is where the male victim jumped from to escape the attacker. but 30-year-old dashera could not escape. she was stabbed multiple times and was pronounced dead at the hospital. 33-year-old melvin williams is in critical condition after he turned the knife on himself. and a friend of the couple's, that man who jumped from the window, he's also listed in critical condition. now, police spent hours here today gathering evidence. they shared very few details, but this afternoon the surviving victim's sister returned to the apartment where she also lived. she says that barks dale had been trying to break up with her boyfriend when last night he returned to the apartment, became violent and started attacking his girlfriend in the upstairs bedroom. >> the door slammed. half of

bureau chief julie carey spoke with a house mate who witnessed that attack. >> reporter: just inside this window, a terrible scene early this morning. a young woman being held by her boyfriend, a knife to her throat. >> he was saying, i told you it's till death do us part. it's till death do us part. i told you i'm going to kill you. >> reporter: she says her house mate had been trying to break things off with her long time boyfriend. but melvin williams came back to the apartment last night and attacked. edwards' brother tried in to help barks dale. >> the door slammed, half of us shut out, half of us shut in. we just hear screaming. so, i don't know, i found the strength, i bust through the door and all i seen was my brother jumping out through the window because apparently he had been stabbed by melvin. >> reporter: when edwards tried to pull her friend out of the room things only got worse. >> i was trying to pull her out. every time i pulled he would stab. line -- so i just had to leave her. >> reporter: when police arrived they found her brother on the ground beneath the window

northern virginia bureau chief julie carey is in our newsroom to explain. hey, julie. >> reporter: hi, pat. her name is jennifer foy. like many, she is a first timer. but just weeks after she announced her campaign, another big first in her life. she learned she was pregnant with twins. then the day before the june primary she was put on bed rest. her husband worked the polls for her and she narrowly won the democratic party's nomination in the second house district. it covers parts of prince william and stafford. then an even bigger challenge. the babies, twin boys, came early. very early at 23 weeks. so, now carol even bigger challenge. campaigning, going back to work as a public defender and spending evenings in the nicu with her babies. she says she never considered dropping out of the campaign. >> with the support of my doctors and my husband and my family, we just said, okay, as long as we can make sure that everything is given its proper time and attention we can work it out. yeah, i never questioned it. i knew that this is something i'm used to doing

bureau chief julie carey looks at what you want to watch for. >> reporter: his name is not on the ballotre likely to hear plenty about donald trump in the debate. advisors to democrat ralph northam made it clear their campaign will continue to try to tie republican ed gillespie to a president who is not popular in the commonwealth. gillespie supporters predict that will backfire. >> it's more of the same, the democrats have decided that their message is we don't like donald trump. and it's not a winning message. >> reporter: this political analyst agrees. there is danger for democrat northam if he spends too much time in the debate talking about trump. >> i think it would be a mistake if northam basically answered every question with donald trump in the senate. i think it's going to be something that he's going to talk about, but a little of that i think goes a long way. >> reporter: steven farnz worth says the goal for both candidates in the debate, connect with independent and undecided voters. he said to do that, the focus needs to be on local issues. >> they're going to look at the q

bureau chief julie carey spoke to the crew tells us how a determined flight crew got that suspect arrested. jules? >> reporter: well, wendy, when a laser into a helicopter, it has to be jarring. something like staring straight into the sun. when this helicopter was coming back from duty saturday night, it happened three times that laser light flashing into the aircraft. >> two times. you know what, those lights don't flash up. it was flashing through the window. >> reporter: that's the conversation inside the chopper just moments after the two crew members were alarmed to find that blazing light suddenly flashing into their eyes. down below they had already noticed a strange suv that seemed to have strobes flashing. they contacted dispatch to get patrol cars on the ground moving. then they tracked that suv driver guiding officers on the ground. their infrared camera shows the officers pulled the guy over, then they get a report on what was discovered inside. >> i think he just said it was a laser pointer. >> there it was. there was a laser there. pointing the laser at us. that's not cool.

our bureau chief julie carey is here with a look at how both campaigns are feeling about the state of the race. julie? >> reporter: well, those two ll contest, the importance of tomorrow's debate only grows. both candidates will be working hard to connect with those undecided voters. they will be the key on election day. the new poll shows both democrat ralph northam and ed gillespie doing well with voters within their party. and gillespie has an edge with independent. getting undecided voters to focus, pick a side, and get to the polls. that's the challenge now. >> what's really going on in this virginia governor's race, this is a challenge for both candidates, how are you heard in the age of trump. there is so little opportunity for even a candidate for governor of virginia to get in the news when the story every day is about president trump. >> reporter: gillespie supporters encouraged by the latest polling, but the state republican party chairman cautions he doesn't put much stock in polls any more. >> it's good news it's close, but it's not showing us winning and until election d
