springfield our northern virginia bureau chief julie carey has been speaking to the health departmenting done to try t to stop spread of this illness. >> reporter: the fairfax county health officials say what's so striksg about this outbreak i the sheer number of residents impacted and the fact that it's hitting in the summer instead of winter months. the residents impacted are in the skied and assisted living section of greenspring, something they call continuing care. there are about 250residents in that unit, one in five have fallen ill. the two people who died, they were alsom suffering fro other complicated medical conditions. they were both elderly. so far 18 residents have had to be hospitalized. although seven of them have now returned to their homes at greenspring and 54a people become ill suffering from respiratory issues. greenspring working closely with the faioax cty health department to try to stop the spread of illness. >> keeping residents who are ill inheir rooms, increasing cleaning and hand washing at the facility,nd they'realso continuing to work with us to report

northern bureau virginia chief julie carey explains what's ahead. >> reporter: joan conner devoted hering lives as a business and ecational teacher and now at 91 here's been a big change in jones' life. she's now dealing with dementia. her daughter cares for her in the alexan>ia home. it's isolated and it's burdensome but it's a burden we take on freely, right? we lovee' mom. w happy to have her with us. >> reporter: isolation is one of the biggest concerns both for those facinia dementand their caregivers, but it's something alexandria is about to tackle with a new initiative called dementia friendly alexandria. jane king will help lead the effort to train the community on how to better interact with those with dementia, andllhey wispread the word on resources available. s >> the idea io end isolation and bring people out in the community and feel comfortable wherever they are so that's the basic mission. >> the dementia friendly training will start ne month with faith communities and over the next several years will include grocery stores, restaurants, banks, even the fire and police
