. >> i am julie haener. firefighters are combing through the ashes of a fire that sent black smoke over fremont all afternoon. we brought you this breaking news at 2:30 p.m. today as the fire raged inside the c&h enterprises building. >> paul chambers is live with the toxics that were inside the factory. paul? >> reporter: it has been three hours since the fire has been extinguishes. firefighters are out here making sure there are no hot spots. firefighters said they could see the fire from the middle of fremont from this company. >> reporter: coming down interstate 880 we could see the black smoke from 5 miles away. 1:45 p.m. this afternoon firefighters received a 911 call of a structure fire. crews called for back up, upgrading it to a three-alarm fire. this warns them of potential dangers. >> within the fammable categories, that is -- flammable categories, that is the worse. >> reporter: firefighters say the smoke was toxic because there was combustible oils and liquids inside. >> very toxic. you want to

i'm julie haener. tonight the san francisco 49ers, every year all 32 nfl teams start with the same goal, get to the super bowl and win it. but very few have a chance to really do that. last year no one thought the 49ers were one of those teams until they came within one game of playing in the biggest game of the year. jim harbaugh talked about the transformation and imperfection. you can see it again this year. it's not the first time that it has happened for the 49ers. in 1979, the 49ers hired another stanford head coach to move up the peninsula and to lead their team. now bill walsh, he would guide the niners to three super bowl wins. when walsh died in 2007, ktvu joe fonzi brought us this look back at his career. >> reporter: his greatest football accomplishments came as the coach of the 49ers, but bill walsh's bay area roots run much deeper. born in fremont and a graduate of san jose state, his first coaching job was at fremont's washington high. he advanced to the staffs of both cal and stanford b

i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. he was driving on highway 85 when the bullets just starting flying. tonight a marine recruiter is uninjured but his vehicle is a crime scene. matt keller talked to the 911 caller who first alerted police. matt. >> reporter: frank, we learned that a 911 call came from inside this outdoor patio business when a marine pulled into this parking lot when his car was shot this afternoon. marines understand the danger of joining the armed forces but don't expect the gunfire to happen at home. deputies say just after 1:00 today an unmarked government car driven by a marine corps officer was shot multiple times. kenneth white saw the pontiac pull into the parking lot where he works with windows blown out and bullet holes in the door. he was asked to call 911. >> what they explained was that the bullet that went across the driver's door lodged itself in the passenger door. he was a lucky guy. >> investigators shut down southbound 85 at 2:00 p.m. as they looked for evidence. they're trying to det

good evening, i'm gasia mikaelian in for julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville, heavy hearts after that massacre at that school in connecticut. today, the first funerals there for two 6-year-old boys. new details about the investigation and the gunman's computer, and new calls to changes to gun laws following that shooting. we have live team coverage tonight. we begin in connecticut, with ktvu's john sasaki, on how that town is remembering its young victims. >> reporter: it is now 1:00 a.m. it is raining here. and yet there are still people here at the memorial at the base of the sandy hook christmas tree. this memorial has grown exponentially in the last few days. at the memorial, we met some sandy hook firefighters. >> we had a meeting, to talk through what we've seen. this helped. we came away feeling well. >> reporter: he said they are deeply moved by the show of support. >> i think at the end, we'll be stronger and grow as a community. >> reporter: two of the victims, the firefighters tried to help were laid to rest today. hundreds of people came together at the funeral home in new

. >> and i'm julie haener. >> tonight we know it was a phone call that prompted heavily armed person that caused a search of the school. we be begin with matt keller on the call that prompted that lock down, matt. >> reporter: julie i just found out in the past few hours that classes will resume as normal tomorrow morning here at san jose city college. this is the technology center building this is where the last of the locked in students were and they were finally allowed to go home just before 8:00 tonight. just after 4:00 this afternoon police say a 911 call was made claiming that there was a gunman on campus. >> i don't know if it was a threat or a hoax but we take everything seriously. >> reporter: fewer than normal because it's finals week. students were evacuated from most of the buildings around 5:00 expect for the technology building. students in the technology building told us they were patted down before they were allowed to leave. >> we started clearing the building, and looking for the suspect or a person matching that description that was given to us. did not, did not f

. >> i'm julie haener. jerry brown has been diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer, and is now undergoing treatment at ucsf. learned about the cancer diagnosis and what the governor faces. >> reporter: earlier this evening, a hospital source told me that the governor received treatment here on the fourth floor at the university of california, san francisco. uscf is one of the preprostrate cancer treatment centers in america. the governor released a statement today saying fortunately, this is early stage, localized prostate cancer. the key is early diagnosis. >> if men who need treatment aren't detected early, they're less likely, far less likely to be cured. >> reporter: a prostate cancer surviver himself, dr. shoeman says patients have options, ranging from monitoring the tumor's growth, to radiation treatment like the governor, to removing the prostate. patients need to work closely with their oncologist. >> they're best equipped to make the recommendations on what to do. and whether or not they shoul

i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. he was driving on highway 85 when the bullets just starting flying. tonight a marine recruiter is uninjured but his vehicle is a crime scene. matt keller talked to the 911 caller who first alerted police. matt. >> reporter: frank, we learned that a 911 call came from inside this outdoor patio business when a marine pulled into this parking lot when his car was shot this afternoon. marines understand the danger of joining the armed forces but don't expect the gunfire to happen at home. deputies say just after 1:00 today an unmarked government car driven by a marine corps officer was shot multiple times. kenneth white saw the pontiac pull into the parking lot where he works with windows blown out and bullet holes in the door. he was asked to call 911. >> what they explained was that the bullet that went across the driver's door lodged itself in the passenger door. he was a lucky guy. >> investigators shut down southbound 85 at 2:00 p.m. as they looked for evidence. they're trying to det

. >> and i'm julie haener. we have some dropping news out of san francisco where four pedestrians were injured when they tried to get out of the way of a speeding vehicle. it happened at 10:00 tonight at the city's twin looking points. four people werewalking when a driver came speeding down the road near that look out point. several people had to jump out of the k rail to get away. two of them had to be taken to the hospital, two of them possibly in critical condition. a witness on the scene told ktvu four people were detained. he said he saw four people in handcuffs while a fourth was injured. we will bring you a live update just as soon as we can get more information. >>> now to solano county where a hit-and-run driver killed a man and his dog today. we're going to eric rasmussen who has the story. >> reporter: one neighbor told me she saw the tire tracks but saw no man and no suspect. >> they were going too far for the neighborhood. left him for dead, did not stop. >> reporter: kevin bowl was walking his ow

. >> and i'm julie haener. it was not the outcome rescuers were hoping for. eric rasmussen is live with the warning for those in the area. >> reporter: that warning is to be very careful in these conditions. the marin county coroner's office is not identifying these victims until their families are notified. however in the last few minutes i did speak to southern marin fire. it confirms these men and a boy were standing on some rocks when they were swept away by a wave when they were fishing just beyond the golden gate. chopper2 had our first view of the scene as boats with the coast guard responded to a 911 call of two people swept out to sea. but officials later delivered the news no one wanted to hear. >> rescue recovered two bodies one male adult and one child. those suspects were later pronounced deceased. >> reporter: the waves do go real high. >> reporter: rescuers led us down this steep side. >> i don't know if it was the high tide that caused the accident. we're trying to get information out to the public, know your tides, know your limits and go out
