our coverage begins with julie longcheck. >> i am at 33 -- [ indiscernible ] shot. >> okay, sir. on the way. help is on the way. >> reporter: the 9-year decorated veteran boston police officer was chasing down a dangerous drug dealer, a felon when he was shot in the leg. >> unprovoked, again, with our officers not having their weapons out from what i understand. >> reporter: members of the mattapan drug unit had 27-year- old grant hedley cornered in mount terrace in dorchester and they were about to bust him for dealing drugs while out on probation for selling drugs, police say. >> at first i thought it was firecrackers. when i heard two more gunshots i got up. >> i heard the police screaming police and told him to stop. he kept on running. >> reporter: commissioner evans said the injured officer tried to tie his newly issued turn quiet when a fill -- turny quiet when a fellow officer he was doing. >> the suspect's father said he can't explain any of this. >> he's from good family, you know, we don't condone that kind of behavior. i don't know what he does when he's not here. whe
