so straight to edinburgh, julie mcdonald is live. tell us about the numbers that we are expecting. i think there's a mixture of feelings here this morning, and i don't know if you can see behind me. edinburgh's capital city is shrouding in this. it's an interesting metaphor, we won't have a clear picture of scotland's future until later. let me tell you about turn out. 97% of the population has been register registered. 4.2 million people, the largest electorate ever. 200,000 have been added to the register in 2012. more interesting is that it 100,000 people have added their names, sometimes people who have never voted in an election before, just in the last month alone. we have seen queues around voter registration stations. today we are hoping that things go smoothly. we have heard various reports, one report from glasgow where people are singing, dressed in tar tan, holding hands. for some people they've been waiting a long time for this day to come. for them it will be more muted. >>> what about the voting process itself, how will that work, and when will we know results. >> we

. >> julie mcdonald joins us from edinburgh. it's the morning after the night before. alex salmond stepping down. nationalists disappointed. what is scotland waking up to this morning. >> what they are waking up to in edinburgh is rain. that's a metaphor. the yes supporters, it was a double blow. first of all, that no vote, and then the father of the cause, alex salmond, the leader of the snp stepped down. that's re-elected on the front pages. let me share with you. this is the scottish, "sun", it's a cartoonish caption. this is nicola sturgeon, who is key to take over. this is a man - i'm describing another paper - who is a divisive figure in politics. people told me at dinner that their parents will not allow the television to be on when his picture is up. he's a marmite character - you love him or you hate him. all the papers reflecting on his stepping down. you see the look of despondens. if you watched the press conference you would have seen it yesterday. it says "the end of the dream." this is the scotland newspaper, the headlines - salmond quits, first minister

julie mcdonald, al jazeera, edemburough. >>> lawrence lee joins us live, and alex sammon announcing heg to step down. did he see this coming? >> reporter: well there were rumors earlier on, but he said he wasn't going to, because he was asked in advance if he would, and he said no. so in that sense i think it was a bit of a sur -- surprise. i'm not sure resignation is right. that seems to imply resignation or failure, and in case it was entirely his own decision. he is not going straight away. he is is going to not seek reelection in november. i think he was entirely his decision, and there is nobody really in the independence movement who demanded that he go. and in terms of failure or success, well, clearly they lost, but the percentages don't tell the whole story. the gap was 400,000 votes. and had they got another 200,000 votes only, it would have been a draw, and clearly past that they managed to exact fairly significant concessions from the entire west elite which was ganged up against them. i think he decided there can't be another referendum for 20 years, at which time he will

julie mcdonald joins us live from edinburgh. the result is reverberating across the country. what is scotland waking up to today? >> scotland is waking up to a mixture of feels. disappointment for some. and the resignation of alex salmond, the father of the cause. it was a shock. we spoke to a yes campaigner, he was up and deeply disappointed and worried about what will spear head the cause. we think nicholas sturgeon, and the baton would pass to her. there's relief for some people. an inyessedent that is prevalent is an experience. they were promised a timetable. they can't precisely agree on what will happen. we saw tension boiling over, frustration there, and we believe what happened is the yes supporters commize rated with one another, joined by no campaigners and unionist supporters who fired missiles and started to sing various songs. the people got involved. some on horse back. what happened is the yes campaign years dissipated and it became something between the police and the unionists. it's been tainted as a separating rival groups. i don't think that that is the so

let's go to edin brau with julie -- edinburgh where julie mcdonald is standing by. i'm pleased to say the mist has lifted. what are they saying about the turn out. >> we are in edinburgh. scotland's capital. when i spoke to you earlier, the mist was sitting on the city, we couldn't see clearly, we thought it was an interesting metaphor, when we have no clear idea of what scotland is going to decide until tomorrow. what we do know is 97% of adult scottish population is ready to vote, potentially 4.2 million people. we visited a few polling stations to take the temperature. before we got there we heard people were queueing around the block, and in some places there was a carnival atmosphere, people bringing children along. we heard from some of the west coast authorities, telling us that turn out is not just brisk, but astronomical. in one polling station in the west of scotland they had received a quarter of all voters on their register in the first couple of hours this morning. we know that here in edinburgh 90% of those that voted by polster returned the ballot and

julie mcdonald has more from the scottish capital.otland woke up to a mixture of feelings - frustration and disappointment for some, relief for others, who are glad they don't have to ask this question. a double defeat yesterday for the yes campaigners, first the no vote to contend with. and campaigners felt shocked by alex salmond who felt he had to resign. it was political strategy from the party who had a narrow marmgin that they could -- margin that they could demand on. in glasgow tensions wild obvious. there was a yes campaign. it boiled over as they were joined by people who have been supporting the no campaign. a couple of missiles were thrown. things were overheated. there were police on horse back. i believe what happened then is the yes campaigners wept away, and there was a fracas between them and the unionist supporters. that kind of division and that example that we saw yesterday in george square. i don't think that's how the majority feel in scotland. there's an issue of constitution revolution, the impacts of the refer

greg hardy convicted in july of assaulting his girlfriend and threatening to kill her. and ray mcdonaldwho is being investigated on allegations he assaulted his pregnant fiance and the only player yet to be taken off the field of those five. the key question emerging in the wake of all this are does the nfl have a particular domestic violence problem? is this a specific issue for a league whose game is predicated on actual violence where hitting someone is the point or is the nfl just a high profile example of a society wide problem, a place that finds itself under the microscope. 538 crunched numbers trying to find out. they discovered in general nfl players have a much lower arrest arrest rate than the national average. that probably has something to bo of do with the fact the poverty rate among nfl players is zero and poverty is connected to higher levels of arrest. domestic violence, they discovered although the nfl arrest is below the national average at 55%, that percentage is more than four times than the league's an arrest rate for all other offenses 13% of the national average.
