good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. kpix 5's christian hartnett is live in san leandro where the alameda county fire department has been busy this summer. >> reporter: they are one of the many local agencies with firefighters and fire engines out in northern california near fresno battling fires away from home and it isn't even considered peak fire season right now. but cal fire says this summer has proven to be one of the more difficult summers across the state when it comes to wildfires. a lot of help has been called. as of yesterday, 12,000 firefighters were battling 17 wildfires in california. half called in from fire districts across the state. alameda county fire says it's all hands on deck during these times. >> so we're daily evaluating our capability, we're going to take care of our homes, communities and the state of california. sometimes we have maxed the department and we have to protect here and take care of our personnel. >> reporter: many agencies have limits on the amount of resources they can send out.

. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. dozens of wild fires are raging across california tonight and you can see why the governor declared a state of emergency late yesterday. the biggest fire is just to the east of clear lake. the rocky fire started wednesday and is still out of control. the fire in lake county is also the largest right now in the state. it has charred more than 22,000 acres and there's no sign of it slowing down. it is only 5% contained. the flames have forced hundreds of people to evacwait their homes. thousands of others are on notice that they may have to pack up and leave. andrea is near the fire line. firefighters are facing a lot of challenges as they try to get a handle on the flames. andrea. >> well, juliette, brian, the situation is very intense out here. the majority of the burning that is happening on the highway 20 side of the fire right now and firefighters say it may be until august 10 before they finally have the thing fully under control. the flames of the rocky fire refuse to slow their

and good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> this is a special edition of kpix news. the 49ers are playing the boston broncos at 6:00 tonight. traffic start the moving on southbound 101 just before 2:30 this afternoon. chopper 5 shows us cars beginning to move after that side of the freeway was cleared. again that southbound, the lanes had been closed for 17 hours. a little more than an hour ago, three northbound lanes reopened as well. two lanes are still closed to make room for repair crews. the drama began at 9:30 last night with construction equipment slammed into the tower. the freeway was closed in both directions between the boulevard. >> those who didn't get the message about the freeway closure were stuck in this. chopper 5 showing the traffic backup for miles and this is highway 101 in burrellinggame going north. cars are being taken off the freeway. kpix5 is in burrellinggame, so how are things looking now, andrea? >> brian and juliette, you can see the construction going on. here are three things that are nearly always a sign of trouble. highway 101 comple
