. >> reporter: this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> we begin with the infamous scott peterson case. more than 20 years after he was convicted of murdering his wife, laci, and unborn child and dumping their bodies in the san francisco bay. scott peterson was back in court with a brand-new defense team again, trying to prove his innocence. he appeared via zoom, wearing a blue prison suit, hair pulled back in a ponytail. proceedings low key and mostly attended by media. a stark contrast from what we saw two decades ago. it started in 2002 when a pregnant laci peterson disappeared right before christmas. her body found in the bay months later. he was convicted of murder, sentenced to die but four years ago the sentence was overturned and peterson was ordered to serve life in prison without parole. the l.a. innocence project took up the case back in january suggesting that some evidence may have been overlooked. we were in court today in san mateo county. >> do we have your consent to proceed via zoom this morning >> absolutely, thank you, your honor. >> reporter: scott pe

i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. >>> it's something that a lot of us do, sit in our cars in a driveway or parking lot, we might be on our phones or waiting for someone, but tonight oakland police say that is exactly what smash and grab thieves are hoping you'll do. our andrea nakano spoke with one woman with who says just weeks after her car was stolen a thief followed her all the way to her driveway in her replacement ride. oakland police say they have seen an increase in smash and grabs, specifically targeting parked cars with a driver still inside. one oakland woman we talked to says the thieves were quick and precise with how they carried out their crimes. aria has lived in the highland park neighborhood all her life. she's always felt safe until she became a victim of a car theft and smash and grab all within a month. she wanted to talk to us about how the robbery unfolded. she said the thieves spotted her on east 14th street and followed her home. >> they slammed their brakes and they also turned left with me and i thought it was a little strange, but i wasn't trying t

. >>> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >>> boy, i am afraid these efforts are in vain. people out snow blowing in the sierra today as they get ready for several more feet of snow to fall over the next few days. we have been warning you and here it is. good evening, another bitterly cold and windy day for everyone. while, here in the bay area the rain is really picking up right now with even the odd lightning strike or two. so, let's start here in san francisco, our crew is at the scene of a falling tree that smashed into a car and injured four people inside. you are looking at live pictures right now. you can see the crews have brought in a crane to remove the tree from on top of a car. here is what we know. the tree came down on the car at lagoona street and golden gate avenue. the fire department says all four people in the car have been sent to the hospital. they have minor injuries. the tree which fell from the sidewalk came down on the car when it was stopped. the officials are asking drivers to avoid this area until the tree is removed. >>> all right, let's take

. >>> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> good evening, we begin with a stunning tragedy that hits home for the bay area. federal investigators are just beginning their search for answers into the devastating bridge collapse in baltimore. it was a massive cargo ship that lost power and then rammed into the span in the middle of the night. it caused it to collapse in just a matter of seconds. you can see the ship still twirsed in the mangled remains of the bridge. we go to a live look now at the closed off entrance to the francis scott key bridge. six construction workers who were fixing potholes on the bridge are now presumed dead. the search for their remains is on hold until the morning. so divers and rescue crews spent much of the day searching the frigid waters on boats and helicopters. two people were pulled from the patapsco river. one person was released, the other is in serious condition. and then here is video. it was captured the moment of the collapse, just before 1:30 in the morning eastern time. the ship was moving at about eight knots, roughly nine miles an

. >>> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> good evening. >>> we do begin with breaking news in oakland. our chopper is over 54th and international where there's been a massive collision between a car and an ac transit bus. this happened a little under an hour ago. we are told at least 14 people are hurt. two are critical. you can see the front of the bus is crushed in and there's the car destroyed. we just heard a second car may have been involved in this as well. no word yet how the crash happened. we have a crew on the way and on the ground. we will continue to follow this and update you. >>> another story here, a couple of brazen burglaries back to back in alameda county. this is a look at the damage at an alameda gas station. you can see the outside there. a truck was used to ram its way in and actually steal the atm. it happened early this morning at the aisle one gas station market on blanding street. the night before burglars used a van to drag the safe out of an oakland jewelry repair store about four miles away on grand avenue. as da lin tells us, in both cases
