. >> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> we are in first alert weather coverage with temperatures in the triple digits inland. pools and beaches were very busy today with people looking for some relief red flag warning meaning fire danger is high. firefighters in san francisco they just put out a grass fire and jumped highway 101 and burns close to homes, they were spared. then following a fire that was really exploding in butte county. there is the thompson fire. it is threatening parts of oroville. it started at 11:00 this morning, only a couple hundred acres a few hours ago. it since spread. cal fire has air and ground crews on site and reinforcement are on the way. as many as 2,000 people are under a mandatory evacuation order. a church is open as an evacuation shelter. people that live in the area are to check cal fire's website for the updated evacuation orders. >>> and some bay area crews are heading to the fire lines. our chopper saw members of the san francisco fire department gearing up to respond to an urgent call for help with the thompson fire. 26 san fra

>>> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >>> good evening, thank you for joining us at 7:00. we are starting on the fires this evening. a brush fire turned into a big threat in contra costa county in a matter of minutes this afternoon. we have been monitoring the latest. >> the fire burned 200 acres, firefighters do seem to be getting a better hold on it. it is now 20% contained. our chopper over that fire soon after it broke out at around 3:30 this afternoon. you can see all of the black land there, that is where the fire has been climbing a dry hillside. taking a live right now from our photographer on the ground. this is one of the areas that was threatened near bay point and evacuated. you can see the law enforcement vehicles there. it looks like, though, the fire is now burning away from the residential neighborhood. that is certainly the good news, firefighters sprayed fire-retardant on some of the homes proactively today. evacuation orders in effect for the area around the north diablo range and port chicago. this is a closer look at that area. the fire starting at

. >>> this is cbs news bay area, with juliette goodrich. >> tonight we begin with the park fire burning near chico. it is the largest fire in california right now. firefighters worry it could grow larger overnight because of a red flag warning. so, there is our chopper captioning the flames, highway 32, that is all in butte county. in fact, here is video of the flames on the ground. look at that. the fire has no scorched more than 124,000 acres. is threatening more than 1000 homes and has forced several thousand people to evacuate. right now it is only 3% contained. here is a look at the fire perimeter northeast of chico. it started spreading north through rural areas of butte county , and now it is reaching into tehama county. law enforcement officials are blaming arson. the butte county das office says this is the car that sparked the fire. they announced the arrest of a suspect, a man from chico allegedly seen pushing a burning car down a gully yesterday afternoon. >> reporter: hellfire has not released any numbers on homes damaged by the fire. reporter kayla meyer spoke with one wom
