i wish all americans a happy juneteenth. and i am in a moment going to sign into law, making it a federal holiday. and i have to say to you, i've only been president for several months, but i think this will go down for me as one of the greatest honors i will have had as president. not because i did it, you did it. democrats and republicans. but it's an enormous, enormous honor. thank you for what you have done, and by the way, it is typical of most of us in congress in the senate. i went down the other end of the whole first and thanked the staff. they are the ones who do the hard work. , juneteenth.e celebrated juneteenth for as long as i've been alive for 73 years. and my ancestors, longer than that. it was about family. >> can i ask you how, do you remember as a kid and over the years what the conversation was like around this significance of this day? >> yes. they taught us to respect who we are. and for what people have fought and given up for us. and that was part of our negro history. that was taught by a gentleman, knitted e williams. he was mentored by frederick douglass. and george washington carver. he had no education but he learned to read from the sharecroppers. and then he brought back to ned e. williams, a little country school. the education. and what was important to us. tax receipts. and voting. right now, people talk about reparations. i don't care about reparations. would i care about is our kids learning to vote. and their rights. and demanding for you, mr. allen, he did make a statement about we need to do better. and not let the government take care of us.

juneteenth marks a long hard night of slave subjugation. this is a day that is profound weight and power. the day in which the moral stain took a toll slavery took on the country and continues to. it would have long called america's original sin. at the same time i remember the extraordinary capacity to heal and help with a better version of ourselves to make a better version of ourselves. today we make june 19th what it must be a national holiday in the vice president noted a holiday to join the others of our national celebrations and independence servicemen and women who served and died in their defense i and grateful to members of congress here today on the congressional black caucus i'm especially pleased to show the nation to come together to commemorate this day with the overwhelming bipartisan support help this is a beginning and a change of the way we deal with one another we are blessed to mark the day. that's one sense of juneteenth.ense, stephanie, is that i want to emphasize the importance of resilience and the great in the face of recalcitrance. in the face of those forces denied freedom. here you have freedom, even though they have been denied their freedom, even though they have been subjected to brutal domination, still imagining themselves in the most expansive of terms, placing crowds above their babies heads, right? imagining themselves in terms other what their relationship of domination suggests they are. it's a story of resilience and great at the same time that it's a story of delayed freedom. so, i think the combination of those to offer us really important lessons for our current moment. >> janelle, your family history takes us back to galveston. is this a celebration or a commemoration? >> i tend to think of it has both. in a very real way, as i understand it, the day that the union troops arrived, they sail into galveston harbor among the soldiers that are with granger that day, as a unit of color

amy: and that is opal lee, considered the grandmother of juneteenth. and, clint, one of the things you do in your book is you introduce us to grassroots activists. this doesn't come from the top. this comes from years of organizing, as you point out, in galveston itself and with people like -- not that there's anyone like -- opal lee. >> yeah, no, absolutely. part of what this book is doing, it is an attempt to uplift the stories of people who don't often get the attention that they deserve in how they shape the historical record. so that means the public historians who work at these historical sites and plantations. that means the museum curators. that means the activists and the organizers, people like take 'em down nola in new orleans, who pushed the city council and the mayor to make possible the fact that in 2017 these statues would come down, several confederate statues in my hometown, in new orleans. and part of -- when i think about someone like miss opal lee, part of what i think about is our proximity to this period of history, right? slavery

we cannot continue, so i celebrate juneteenth, in fact the idea of juneteenth was exactly this.t the nation to pause for a moment, understand the mentality of slavery, slavery's been silenced, it's been not spoken about, and frankly that is not gonna cure america, that's not gonna heal america, that won't bring americans together. so, this gives a channel for discussion and education, i did this for a decade, -- with my colleagues who i applaud and thank. i'm glad to be the chair, had the leadership to do their support, and then of course president of united states and our beloved -- in the state of texas. who started this state law. but this is a statement that america has a race problem. when a young boy takes an automatic weapon and says that he is born into the replacement theory, then we must begin to put -- irreverent, begin to put the commission to study slavery, reparation proposals understanding or acknowledging will bring about understanding. we cannot continue this past way, i hope with juneteenth lava pathway forward to do the healing of this nation. and >> yeah, and

juneteenth was fun.history, and to just remind people of many of the challenges that are in our recent history. this is not so long ago in american history, and, in in fa, as dr. canton talked about the history of juneteenth overall, i just wanted to touch a little bit on the history of juneteenth in san francisco. arguably, and, you know, i see reverend brown in the audience so he will correct me if i'm wrong, but arguably going back since around 1945 when dr. wesley johnson, who was the owner of the texas playhouse on philmore street. how many of you hung out there? no? reverend brown? no. [laughter] but many of us know about this rich history of san francisco being known as the harlem of the west and having people like duke ellington and billie holiday and folks come from all over the world to play in philmore, but before that, so many african-americans migrated here from texas, including dr. wesley johnson senior. my grandmother and her siblings and others came here for what they thought would be a b

juneteenth is celebrated. first time a proud moment considering the day wasn't even recognized as a holiday by our local government until 2020. we didn't even know we were making history at the time, but we knew that we were doing something that was right balance agency and other prominent african-american groups in the county approached leaders with the plan two years ago following the protest demanding justice for george floyd cindy chavez and the santa clara county board of supervisors union. sleep voted to make juneteenth the county holiday the first county to do so in california part of the reason it was so important to go first to someone had to and second of all everybody wants to live in a place they belong and every time we take an action like this, it's one more opportunity for people to know they belong senator dave cortese was on the board of supervisors when santa clara county recognized juneteenth now new legislation calls on california to make juneteenth not just a county holiday, but a state ho

and what this has to do with juneteenth? is that juneteenth is not just about the day? it's about what happened on that day? things leading up to it. and what happened after the promise of this moment. when african americans in texas learned that slavery was over and i end the book with that so i start with my childhood which i think was through the sort of the culmination of all the things that had taken place after the end of slavery. this reconstruction the struggle over reconstruction and then jim crow afterwards and the attempts to bring black people into citizenship that had been a long process and that culminated with you know me starting my story. as a person who began school with opportunities that my parents and my grandparents and my great grandparents did not have because of the institution of slavery and the legacy that came after that with jim crow. so in the book talking about juneteenth, which is i grew up celebrating. as sort of a black july 4th. in a way, i mean we celebrated both. this sort of a one-two punch, you know, you would have june 19 juneteen
