justin gray is live in our washington, d.c. bureau where a california teen told his story this morning. justin? >> reporter: nearly 200 california schools have native- american mascots. now a 15-year-old california teen says it's time for that to change. dakota brown is a member of the california miwok and a football player. one of the teams he plays is the calaveras redskins. the red skin is considered a racial slur. just last month, the u.s. patent office canceled the trademark calling the team name disparaging. >> down on the field, you hear it from the crowd, go red kins. but also -- redskins. but also from the opposing teams, kill the redskins and scalpel them. it's very hurtful to hear the comments. >> reporter: a report was released today calling for all teams with native-american mascots to change them. the washington redskins has refused to do that. we reached out to another team macing this challenge, the braves. a spokeswoman there says they feel comfortable with their team name. justin gray, ktvu channel 2 news. >>>

justin gray is live from our washington, d.c. bureau to explain the action the president announced just this morning. justin? >> reporter: president obama warned russians and pro-russian separatists not to collect or remove any evidence from the crash site. a team of international investigators son the way there. i spoke to the ntsb where a spokesman confirms they are employing one investigator to ukraine. president obama says evidence shows it was a surface surface- to-air missile this brought down the plane and fired from anarea controlled by rebel forces. he said the separatists have shot down other aircraft saying it requires very sophisticated technology that those separatists are getting from russia. >> no one can deny the truth that's revealed in the awful images we've all seen. the eyes of the world are on eastern ukraine. we're gonna make sure that the truth is out. >> reporter: the faa has expanded no-fly zone in southern ukraine for commercial flights. before the president spoke, the u.s. ambassador to the united nation

[ sirens ] >> reporter: a major security effort as ahmed abu khatallah made his way to washington, d.c. district court. inside, the 43-year-old was calm and attentive and required an arabic translator to determine whether he will stay locked up behind bars until his trial gets underway. prosecutors have charged ahmed abu khatallah in connection to the 2012 attack in libya that killed the u.s. ambassador and three others. in court papers prosecutors say the defendant gave voluntary statements corroborating key facts. prosecutors said there are witnesses and physical evidence linking him to the terrorist attack. they say even after benghazi, the defendant had continued to make efforts to target american personnel and property. ahmed abu khatallah's court appointed attorney concedes he should stay locked up until trial but she describ

ktvu's justin gray is live in washington, d.c. where at this hour the secretary of transportation is giving a new warning to parents. justin. >> reporter: the simple message from the secretary of transportation this morning is that no child should ever be left in a hot car period. now, this is coming after 17 children have died so far this year after being left alone in cars. this is after 44 children died the same way last year. this morning the head of the national highway traffic safety administration and the secretary of transportation, anthony fox, are launching a new effort to educate parents and caregivers called look before you lock. the recent death of 22-month- old cooper harris in georgia after being left all day in a car and the arrest of his father on murder charges in the case has really brought nationwide attention to this issue. we sat down with the head of nitsa to talk about the problem. he says in about half of these cases parents forget their children are in the back seat. >> we are encouraging all parents and
