anne makovec is at justin herman plaza. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. no sign of a police raid here at 4:30. they have been expecting it for several hours. and it is generally peaceful here at justin herman plaza. take a look at the camp here behind me. it's been here for a couple of weeks. you can see people milling around. we have flags, banners, and those tents that are really the source of what is illegal here in justin herman plaza. some people are wearing handkerchiefs on their faces. some have been doused in vinegar to help them, they say, ward off any tear gas if police end up throwing any tear gas at them. so they are prepared. but they say they are also ready for peaceful resistance, general civil disobedience. nobody wants anything here to happen like in oakland over the past 24 hours. now, police have been staging, as grace mentioned, for some sort of operation. they were staging out at treasure island and then south of market overnight. this is some video taken from chopper 5. we have heard from mayor ed lee a couple of times over the past f

anne makovec at justin herman plaza where there is a big sigh of relief i would imagine anne. good morning. >> reporter: yes, it is tentative relief though at this point. the camp still stands here at justin herman plaza even though there were some very strong warnings overnight that police were going to come in and raid the camp. as you can see, we still have an awful lot of tents here lined up and people, as well. protestors made the announcement within the last couple of hours that they are inside sources had told them that the planned police operation has been called off. they say it's because there were too many protestors and not enough police. here's some video from earlier this morning. police had been staging in the potrero hill area of san francisco. and in this video, i believe you're looking at right now, they are seen packing up much to protestors' delight. >> it looks like everything is pretty quiet. we're hoping that they won't make statement and then just come back and attack us no warning. that would be pretty dirty. >> reporter: now, overnight a lot of city le

more people are starting to gather at justin herman plaza in san francisco. you are also looking at the scene at the plaza in oakland protesters vowed to take it back and they did. 700 gathered near city hall to discuss what they're going to do next. we have some developing news out of san francisco, we will get to that in just one minute. but first, i am justine waldman. >>james: i am james fletcher and support of those protesters who had a few council members are writing late last night in support. we will hear about that coming up a little bit. for the most part last night protest was a peaceful one. you can see it here in the video the fence surrounded the grassy area at the plaza where the encampment was taken down just one day before. for now, the mayor of oakland and oakland police are promising not to move against demonstrators and as the crowd gets violent. >> i want some time to open up the channels of communication. we have decided to have minimal police presence in the plaza over the next day or so so that we can try to open up the dialogue here.

they just left from where we are, justin herman plaza, as you said, heading down market street. now, what they're telling us is that they've come together for causes before, but this is the first time that this interfaith group has come together to support an offshoot of the occupy wall street movement where protesters are camped out, as you said, at justin herman plaza. hard to tell exactly how many demonstrators are staying here for occupy sf. it's easily over 100 of them. the religious leaders are carrying a golden calf with them. they say as a sign of corporate wealth and greed. they say they're going to perform rituals. they are going to have a few of them do a short dance interpretation. they have a shroud, march iing the federal reserve bank and then three other financial institutions. >> very intentional movement to say we don't separate what we do in our faith, in our churches from what happens in politics and government. and so we're really here to lift our voices, to speak to power. and to make it known, this is not okay. the condition of america as it is now is nop n

kristy seifkin is at justin herman plaza where the anti- wall street demonstration continues.morning. >> reporter: pretty peaceful at this point this morning. very different scene this morning than what we saw over the weekend. sunday night into monday morning that police came in tearing down tarps and tents and that led to the arrest of five protestors here. this afternoon at 1:30, though protestors plan to march on city hall and tell mayor ed lee as well as the board of supervisors that they don't want their activities broken up in the future. so over the weekend the police as well as city officials came here to the plaza and technically it's illegal to park here -- excuse me, to camp here in a city park. police asked the protestors to remove their tents and tarps. they refused. then crews moved in, removing all the equipment. things heated up. the protestors blocked roads, reportedly stabbed tires on one of the city vehicles and police eventually arrested one protestors, reportedly for assaulting an officer and then four more individuals who police said were block the road

. >> at this hour, a press conference is getting underway at justin herman plaza. tensions are high there. alex savidge is there with more on what's happening. >> reporter: some protesters believe the police were a bit heavy-handed when they moved in last night on this encampment. just a few hours ago we saw police reach out to the protesters. we want to show you video that we shot. he essentially said city workers need to come through here and do a cleanup. it was a very civil meeting. much different than the tense -- the tense confrontation last night. officers pulled people out of the road, some people were lying -- were lying down trying to block trucks. protesters put up -- put up a fight. this man says he was hurt during the scuffle. >> i was pushed down, picked up, thrown, shoved. >> they managed to grab this finger here and dragged me across the street by my finger with the intent to break my finger. >> reporter: in the end, police arrested five protesters including one person with assault on an officer. james says he was blocked for blocking a roadway. >>

overnight close to a thousand protesters flooded in to justin herman plaza. bob redell is on the scene this morning. bob, the tension has to be p palpable there. >> reporter: good morning, scott. it seems like the tension has died down because of the raid that a lot of people were anticipating has yet to happen. there's still quite a crowd out here. maybe three or four protesters. i think maybe there's a sense that this raid is not going to happen. but it certainly seems like it did in the morning while he was on treasure island. he estimated a couple of hundred police officers congregating there. and then around 2:20 they fwoorded buses, got in their vehicles, crossed the bay bridge, came into san francisco. their location is unknown. the san francisco supervisors were out here, including the president david schu. they came out here with solidarity with the occupy sf protesters. and to media a resolution that would not involve a crackdown. in the words of david chu, they said it's been absolutely silent so far. >> we can resolve these without a violence conf

occupy movement in san francisco lash out at city officials today as they stand their ground in justin herman plaza. david stevenson joins us now. he's live with word that some vendors are worried that the protests could hurt their bottom line. >> reporter: occupy members say they are uneasy with this move. >> you are out of order. >> reporter: occupy san francisco members angrily addressed mayor lee about this weekend's confrontation between protesters and police. >> since he publicly says he supports what we're doing. on sunday night he had the ultimate authorities to call the police officers off and did not do so. >> reporter: let's be clear. long-standing laws on the books that help keep our streets and sidewalking safe do not interfere with the right to peacefully protest and occupy space. >> reporter: camping on the plaza is illegal under the city code. though the city is in talks with occupy sf members about the encampment. >> we have filed for a permit for the space. we're not sure if we're going to get that or not, but we've at least filed that. >> reporter: that is not good news for some
