i'm justine waltman. governor gavin newsom made this announcement this morning in san francisco making california the first state in the country to implement this mandate. kron four's charles clifford was there that announcement and he has more now on the governor's timeline for when school children will need to be vaccinated against covid-19 in order to go to classes in-person. good afternoon, charles. >> hi, yes. so it in california students have to get 10 different vaccines including things like vaccines for mumps and measles. but and that announcement today the governor announced that they're going to add a covid-19 vaccination to that list. the new requirement won't begin until the fda fully approves the vaccine for kids. once a vaccine is approved student vaccinations will happen in 2 phases. >> the first phase will be 12 year olds and up grades 7 through 12 newsom says the earliest that could happen would be january of next year possibly later, maybe july newsom also says that in that first phase,

i'm justine waldman. now the counties of alameda contra, costa moran napa san francisco san mateo, santa clara and sonoma. they will lift the indoor mask requirements once they reach the cdc's moderate or yellow tier for covid-19 transmission and stay there for at least 3 weeks. if covid-19 hospitalizations are low and stable and 80% of the jurisdictions total population is fully vaccinated or it has been 8 weeks since a covid-19 vaccine has been authorized for emergency use by federal and state authorities for 5 to 11 year olds. now, meanwhile, san francisco is going to be easing. the indoor mask requirement for certain indoor settings starting next friday. that's october. 15th the city is going to ease restrictions in certain places like gyms and offices where everyone is 100% vaccinated and the people who go in and out are consistent and known. for example, gyms usually see the same members regularly and they are required to be vaccinated offices. it's the same people in and out. san francisco health o
