a typical scene in downtown kabul in 1993. this is the kabul river that runs through the city. this is the ministry of defense that all the rocketing sending in 122 millimeter rockets. devastating from some of you may know the phrase katusha rockets. awful armament, but that was daily life for everybody. and this was a typical stand aside the puddle as the tank goes through the scene. again, back to the civilians and how they suffered in downtown kabul. fighting over western kabul, shia sunni, government, nongovernment, deals were being made all the time. but mortar tubes were being aimed essentially straight up. artillery battles and gun battles. and this is one typical family leaving quickly. and if you have five seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, what do you take? and it became very evident to me this was a serious move to get out of town or just move aside quickly, a bicycle, a teacup, a chicken, and a bag of food. the daughter-in-law and the mother. combined household, and no men of fighting age. eventually, they got to go back two or three days later, but they were caught in

this was outside the kabul star hotel. close to major embassies in what is supposed to be the most secure part of the city. there were attacks on the parliament building and nato headquarters and another military base on the outskirts. host: where were you? vanda: this is a video from kabul which is where i was at the time. i have been very fortunate that i have been able to do a lot of fieldwork in my life, the work that has brought unique and insights, including total empathy with people. so this is one of the trips when i was in kabul that several other colleagues, guests of nato, we were on the streets as the attack took place and being holed up for the rest of the day and night in the ministry and to -- expelled from the building by a guard who decided he wanted to go home. nd a story of the waiting, the boredom, the drama, the real danger to life. think it captures many aspects of war. we often focus on war in the moments of suffering where a bomb goes off. but, of course, there are these long periods in between that

let's get to the latest from jennifer glasse, who is there in kabul. this was a very powerful blast in an area that one would imagine is very heavily defended. >> well, of course, kabul has been under high alert for the last couple of weeks since attacks killed more than 50 people and wounded more than 200. the city has been on high alert, and today the car bomb going off in a residential district not far from the american embassy. not far from the airport road inside the ring of steel that the police have check points, they look and watch vehicles, the target of that car bomb apparently the convoy carrying those civilian contractors working for nato, three of those civilian contractors are killed. nine afghan civilians including one woman said that more than 100 people have gone to hospitals all over the capital injured from that blast. and as i said of begans are very concerned about the security situation here. very concerned that it is deteriorating and this blast has been in a very crowded residential area not far--just outside a hospital not far

military special forces headquarters at camp integrity in kabul. earlier in the day a police academy in kabul was attacked by a suicide bomber in a police group form. twenty recruits were killed in that blast. and in the hours before that, a city block in a residential part of kabul was leveled by a truck bomb. more than 15 innocent people were killed there. these attacks happened as the taliban and afghan government try to negotiate peace and figure out a way to exist together. these peace talks were long planned but complicated by the announcement that the famous taliban leader mullah omar is dead and has been for two years. that's why the president of afghanistan is blaming this surge in violation on attackers attempting to create a diversion. his office specifically blames the taliban. the state department, though, not willing to make that conclusion. they do just condemn the attacks with this quote. they say the attacks demonstrate again the insurgency's complete disregard for the lives of innocent after begans. such actions -- afghans. such a
