kaczynski himself had been a member of solidarity, his wife solidly at his side. and now as he was president of poland, forging new relationships, mending the wounds with the jewish community, it was a time of polish leadership, reaching out to the world at efforts of reconciliation and in this case russia reached back. one of the people who died, it was so poignant, was a woman named anna walentynowicz. she was in many ways the rosa parks of the solidarity movement. she was a crane operator in the gdansk shipyard. they fired her for trying to form a union. when anna stood up, so did lech walesa. when solidarity was born and he leapt over that wall, he took the whole world with him. and now down came after years of martial law and occupation, we had solidarity and then ultimately a free poland. at this time of great tragedy as we honor those who died in the forest, in 1940 and those who died in the forest just on saturday, we can see that hopefully some good would come out of this. it's been a triple tragedy. the massacre of 1940, the cover-up by the soviet union,

children across the country observed a minute of silence in memory of their lost president lech kaczynski. in australia auswitch many marched. and in warsaw some stood in line to sign a book of condolences. >> we don't know how to live without our president. we feel very, very sad. >> reporter: as poland mourned russian investors confirmed they identified the body of maria kaczynski, the president's wife. their closed coffins will lie in state at the palace tomorrow. investigators say the likely cause of the crash which killed 96 is pilot error. the black boxes revealed no technical fault. some analysts say the pilots may have been pressured by passengers, even the president himself, to get them on time despite heavy fog to a memorial at the site of the massacre of polish world war ii pows at the hands of the soviet secret police. >> there were people waiting for the service to begin. i think the alternative was flying to moscow, suggested by ground control, was simply out of the question. >> reporter: today poland's chief prosecutor said there was no evidence of any such pressure so far.

there is an episode, as you know, two years earlier, when president kaczynski was to land in georgia, where the pilot felt it was unsafe to land and the president effectively ordered him to land. could this have been a case where the pilot was being asked to land against his will? >> i was on that plane to georgia and i remember it well. but this time, we have no evidence so far that that happened. >> one of the hopeful signs that has come out of this tragedy has been just how stable poland has been. and it is, i suppose, the culmination of a process of the consolidation of polish democracy and its market economy. is it likely that this will destabilize things, or do you feel comfortable and confident that poland's democracy and, in fact, its economy, will endure and will remain as stable as they've been? >> the logistical operation of bringing back those departed and organizing all these funerals is actually a huge organizational operation and we are doing it, i think, quite efficiently. and it shows you that we have a new poland, a poland that has not suffered recession. >> tell me,
