the only thing that comes to mind would be julius kahne. i'm wondering if that is something. i know members of the community have concerns, if that's something that could maybe allay concerns and still be a source of -- a source of -- for, for some of the folks that have used it. then before you -- before you become a tenant, i suggest that as a maybe consolation there to keep that program going. i think it is time to make a decision. they have waited long enough. i want to see us move forward. i appreciate the concerns of the community that it is a long-term lease. as we talked about a few minutes ago, if the city's fortunes reverse, we have a different set of concerns. you know. concerns that we could only hope for. when our when the budget changes. so i'm wondering if, to -- to the point, maybe we could shorten the lease and amory, i know that's not ideal for you. looking to -- to find a way to make this work for everybody today, go from maybe five years instead of something like a two-year but with a year's notice. you know. it -- discussion. you know, at least you get a

so the next artist i'd like to introduce is ned kahn. i want to mention, both ned and jamie are winners of the mcarthur genius awards, so we have two mcarthur genius fellows on our artist team. ned, will you join me? ned has lived in san francisco for 20 years and worked at the exploratorium during that time, and as his studio needs grew and his family grew, he moved to the north to pedaluma. so he's no longer a san francisco resident, but really sort of grew up here and he's worked on a number of public art projects for san francisco, transit-related. if you've ever taken bart to the airplane, when you arrive at the airplane station, there's a circular area surrounding the escalators covered with shimmering metal discs that reflect the wind and the movement of the trains and that was done by ned, as well as a variety of other pieces, ned is now known for his work with the elements with wind, with water, with light, and works on projects throughout the world with some of the most highly-recognized architects of the world. this design tha

i don't think it is going to be at laurel heights but i think julius kahne or the play ground that you just mentioned, phil, offers some great potential. we don't win in this situation. believe me. because -- we're going to make somebody happy and somebody upset here. and i guess that is just the nature of the base. -- business. the fact is we have to make the decision. i think based on those economic factors and the -- and the hard reality. i'm going to say it again and keep saying it, every time we lose money in this process, we let guardeners go and we let rec directors go. we're under the gun and staff is working hard on this to find alternatives. i -- we may not be perfect in the process of outreach and notification and everything else but the -- the harsh reality is that when we save money, we serve the whole city. we don't serve just the neighborhood by putting guardeners and recreation center directors back to work. i think that we're under that gun. so be that as it may or people that want to call it privatization, which i find to be an offensive word. i would rather say it is

when you look at ned kahn's interactive water fountain display and the way that it in realtime reflects the movement that is taking place underneath that garden and highlights and manifests that movement symbolically for the visitors, you see how the architecture and the art really are working together. so it has just been, i think -- i'm urging you to approve. this although the san francisco arts commission doesn't have any jurisdiction over this project. we did, however, present all of the artists and their concepts to them. they wholeheartedly endorsed this plan and the selection of the artists. it's really great to see san francisco-based artists and internationally renowned artists like jenny holster and james carpenter and tim hawkinson all being part of this enormous fabulous project. thank you very much. >> thank you, luis. i'd like to, on behalf of the tkpa thank all the artists for your time here today and your presentations. it's all very much in line with what we're trying to achieve, which is a very light, open, welcoming, joyful jewel for the city and county of san francis
