but not everyone feels that way. >> woodruff: senator kaine, what about you? is that language you could live with? >> i want to keep battling for the path to citizenship. i don't think having a permanent, locked-in, second-class status is a good idea. however, i think that jeff is probably right. if we're going to predict what the house bill might be before it goes into conference, i think they'll do the border security and they'll thael do visa reform and maybe dream act provisions. but oing citizenship they might fall short of where the senate is. that will then be a challenging negotiation. but we shouldn't-- you know, we shipment predetermine where that negotiation will go. getting the house to pass something would be big, and then we have our conferees, and folks like jeff who worked on the bill hard getting in that room and trying to figure out the best possible deal. >> woodruff: senator flame flaik, what about some of the other things the president talk about? he talked about wanting to build ladders of opportunity into the middle class. is his prescri

i met david on the tom kaine for governor campaign in 1977. he was a youth volunteer and so was i. really, after that time i completely lost touch with david. we didn't travel in the same circles in high school. i was the class president and athlete, i don't know what david was doing during that time. and then we reacquainted years later in i think 2000 when he was helping bob franks with his senate campaign. so we went 23 years without seeing each other. and in the years we did see each other, we passed in the hallways. so i want to clear that up. it -- it doesn't make a difference, except that i think some of the stories that were written impute an emotional closeness between me and david that doesn't exist. i know david, and, you know, i knew that bill wanted to hire david to come to the port authority, and i gave my permission for him to do it, but that was bill's hire. he asked for my permission and i gave it to hire david. but let's be clear about the relationship. listen, what i read yesterday makes me angry. that's the one bit of anger i felt. that language and that callus

senator kaine. >> thank you, mr. chair. thank you all for your testimony. i believe we'll fix this and fix it probably. i really want to ask a question about the next issue down the road which is, as we start to think about what we might hear back from the commission in early 2015, from conversations with, you know, primarily new people in the military, i've got a youngster in college. the way they talk about the compensation and benefits is that they have a feeling that some are promised, almost contracted, a retirement after a few serve a full career, that's in the promise zone. some are sort of reasonable expectations, if i'm in the military and i have an injury, there's going to be a va system there that will be functional and i have a regional expectation without knowing what the budgetary top one is, it would be a functioning va system. and some are sort of less than a promise or a particular expectation. there may be hope for a desire. so, for example, what would the premium level be for a retirement health policy, if i take -- for a health insurance

i would also like to associate myself with senator kaine. it's good to have a budget. he made mistakes in the budget process but quite frankly i'm very pleased with my colleague. we raised this early on with senator wicker and send ayotte and myself. the way the congress has responded to looking at this with an open mind trying to fix it in a bipartisan way. i think this is a good thing. everybody makes mistakes but you really judge people by their willingness to right wrongs it seems like we're on a good glidepath defined $69, hopefully, to set aside for what we've done with the c.o.l.a. minus one%. but the idea of reforming compensation, count me in, i just think the time has come prospectively to look at the sustainability. there's a difference, ago, between what you're saying about the overall cost of personal within the military budget and with some of our veterans organizations thing. what percentage of dod's budget is personnel related? >> the military compensation by itself is about one-third. and overall compensation disciplines is about half of the budget. bu

an envoy was supposed to go at the end of august with ambassador bob kaine. that was turned back.ce then, not a whole lot. my mother visited in october and we're hoping and praying every day for swift resolution to this case that has gone on far too long. >> again, can you try to explain to the audience as to the charges that are being brought against your brother saying that he is being accused of overthrowing the north korean government. how are they justifying that charge at this point? >> you know, kenneth was there working legally as a tour operator. he did that for at least 18 tours into north korea as a legitimate businessman for almost two years before he was arrested so the rest is a surprise to us. i can say -- i'm not in a place to dispute the legal charges by the north korean government because of the sensitivity. but i can say with certainty that he in no way had any harmful intentions against the north korean people or the government. he had the biggest heart for them. you know, he was happy to be contributing to their economy with his business. >> now, it's obviousl

he really took some partisan shots at president obama and tim kaine from virginia yesterday, and so didn't really mount necessarily the most credible defense in terms of the legal claims that are going to be against him. >> alex, the analysis seems to be that this is it, as you have suggested, for him, but there's another gop governor. someone else considered a 2016 contender. he was considered a potential 2012 romney running mate, chris christie, of course. yesterday, we played live his inaugural address. he did not mention the bridge scandal or any of the other problems that are surrounding him, although polls show nationally he's slipping in a hypothetical matchup with hillary clinton, 46% to 38%. and the question becomes, can he come back from this? and one argument by supporters of his is that two years is a very long time and that, you know, we don't know what's going to happen yet, and, in fact, people have a very short attention span. other scandals come up, this perhaps being a case in point. where do you see the whole christie story standing right now? >> i think it's certainly p
