kaitlan, i will start with you here. the u.s. is averaging more cases per day than, frankly, at any point during the pandemic. but you did hear vice president pence saying we're making incredible progress. now, you were in the room, kaitlan. what was that briefing like? >> well, it was so notable for, not only the reasons you talked about. you know, how pence was really able to square the idea of them inviting and encouraging thousands of supporters to come indoors at these rallies they are having. but also, the different messages you heard from the different people speaking. i mean, you saw the vice president saying where we are now is better than where we were two months ago. even though, yesterday, we hit the daily high of recorded cases. but also, the differences in the message from the health experts. dr. birx, she has not been one who wants to contradict the president of course during this pandemic and as we have seen them at these briefings. but at one point, she was pointing to a slide from texas, that completely refuted

and maga should be masks are great again. >> well, it does not get anymore correct than that, kaitlan, and do you think that we will see a conversion of the president on the mask? >> well, no, because he believes that the wearing the mask is not presidential, and it is going to give the media amusement to see him wearing a mask, and that is one reason that he does not want to wear one, and at the beginning of this, the republicans said it is the president's personal choice, and we are going to be wearing one, but it is putting them in awkward positions, because like when he had the rally at oklahoma and the senator said that he didn't know if he would wear one at the rally even though he had been wearing one everywhere else in his home state. so they seem like sometimes they don't wear one, because of the fear offing aggravating the president. so we have heard them wearing one coming to the door and taking it off before they go to meet with the president. the white house is right, the president is often tested regularly, but it is not going to explain why he is out or when he is out a

thanks so much kaitlan collins. david, trump in hess polls is trailing biden in a lot of key battleground states, michigan, wisconsin, florida, arizona, north carolina. what does that tell you? >> well, it tells me something about the mood of the electorate and the map. first, the mood. the president is just losing on the major two issues facing the country, the coronavirus pandemic and, of course, the battles for social justice in the aftermath of george floyd's killing, jake. overwhelmingly voters in these battleground states, you name them, six critical states that determine the outcome of the election, when it comes to the virus, they want to see whatever needs to be put in place to combat the virus, even if that harms the economy. not just open the economy at any cost. so that's one place donald trump is out of step. on these protests, there's overwhelming support for the protest we've seen across the country. they are not interested in just hearing his law and order message. demographically he's clearly losing

and let me bring kaitlan collins back. not just even have the conversation about this if military leaders were trying to do so in a bipartisan way? what's the politics here? >> reporter: well, the white house is using the same defense that they did in 2017 when the president came out against pulling down those confederate statues or removing them, which is basically where does it end? they were implying that if you start renaming bases like this or taking down certain statues, then people will start calling for statues like george washington to be pulled down. of course, that is not an argument that many people have made or anyone really. but the question is the president often makes arguments like these. they feed well with his base. the question is does it still? because we've seen a lot of public opinion change over the last two weeks as you've seen the unrest across the nation. and the president has maintained his position on kneeling in the nfl and not renaming these bases or moving confederate statues. >> it just see

kaitlan collins is "out front" near the white house. kaitlan, what are you learning about the important meeting the president had today where there are some loved ones to police brutality. >> reporter: this is the meeting before he came out to the rose garden. the white house said it was a mutual decision that the families didn't want to come out in front of the cameras. you heard him name several of the names of loved ones he met with. one of them was antione rose. we've now heard from antione rose's mother who says she was not present, she did not go to that meeting with president trump, and she said she wouldn't go if she had been invited. we did hear from ahmaud arbery's family. they said they found the president very compassionate as he met with them behind closed doors later today. of course he came out to the rose gordon, gave the full-throated endorsement, and the executive order just encouraging the reforms. it doesn't mandate any kind of immediate action, and it is leaving the heavy lifting to congress here not only for some o

that's such an important reality check, kaitlan. and not to take us back to elementary school math, but the white house will argue, and you hear vice president pence wrongly arguing, there's more testing, so more testing generates cases. if you're tested and you have it, and you're untested and you have coronavirus, you still have coronavirus. if you're testing more people, if you have more positivity, then the number -- one divided by another, increasing over time, tells you it doesn't matter you have more testing, you have more positive people relative to testing. >> that's right. you have more infection out there. that's the bottom line. you are finding more of that infection. but the more relevant thing is for so long, because we weren't testing enough, that virus started to spread, and now we're getting better eyes on how significant this problem is. the hospitalization rates in these places are obviously a different measure. that's not something that's going to be directly influencesed by the number of tests. rates are going u
