kaitlan collins helped break this story. what are you learning about the two americans and their release? >> reporter: yeah, amazing news for the families of judith and natalie ranaan who have desperately been waiting for word on their loved ones, and we have confirmed they're the two american hostages who have been released and now in israel according to the prime minster's office here. they're on their way to a military base where they're going to be meeting their family who's waiting for them tonight. judith and natalie, many people are familiar with their story. they're from illinois and they were just in israel visiting. natalie just graduated from high school. she was here with judith, their mother. they were celebrating a relative's 85th birthday. they were staying at a kibbutz an hour away from gaza as this attack unfold. they were kidnapped into gaza. now we learned they are being released. a lot of people are going to be asking, why these two hostages? why did hamas decide to release them? carding to hamas they say

kaitlan, what are you picking up? >> reporter: yeah, john and kate, this is really notable because when president biden arrived here in israel that was when he first said that he embraced those denials by israel, that they were not behind that hospital explosion in gaza, and he said based on what he had seen but he did not say what it was that he had seen, but when he was just in the room meeting with those families and the first responders, he was asked what made him confident that israel was not, in fact, behind that strike. i'm quoting the president now, he says, the data i was shown by my defense department. so he is citing the pentagon, saying that is the reason he is confident that it was not the israel defense forces that were behind that explosion that happened at that hospital, something that they have strenuously denied. he says it is the pentagon who is backing that up and that is why he cited that as soon as he arrived here on the ground in tel aviv. obviously that is incredibly significant because we've s

>> good evening, kaitlan.ll, sometime on friday evening or friday afternoon, israeli intelligence started picking up on small signs that each of them alone doesn't really know anything. but when you put all them together, you start getting this very worrying picture of hamas may be thinking of doing something. and because of all of those signs, a series of high-level consultations took place. some of it on friday night, several hours, four or five hours, before the hamas attack. and those consultations, the idf chief of staff was on the conversation, the head of the southern command, the head of the security agentcy. so, all the top security officials in the country were on those conference calls. and the dilemma was whether this was a real preparation for an attack or an exercise. there were several proposals to put the border -- all the idf forces on the border on high alert. at the end, the decision was not to do it and wait for the morning to see what happens. several hours later, the attack took place. >>

trump, that is, by the orders the judge imposed. >> and kaitlan, any sense how this is going over in the trump orbit? >> i can guarantee you when they all woke up this morning, trump's legal team and trump himself, they did not think he would be called to the stand today. this is a result of nearly every day when he has gone into the courtroom here in manhattan, he has spoken to reporters, railing against the attorney general here in new york, going off on the judge, of course, what the judge believed going off on one of his law clerks again today after he already posted pictures of her. that was the reason he got the first fine. it was seen as a technicality because he left it up on his campaign site. i think the 15 grand is not something that is obviously going to hurt someone like a donald trump, but it is the essence of it. he is now facing punishment for the comments he is making. and he got up there and tried to make his own argument, tried to argue that he wasn't actually talking about this law clerk, even though the judge noted she sat a lot closer to him than michael cohen d

i want to bring in kaitlan collins. kaitlan, what can you tell us?rter: this is good news for the families of these two american hostages. cnn confirmed via the israeli prime minster's office that the two hostages release ready judith and natalie renat. they were here in israel celebrating a relative's 85th birthday. the they were at a kibbutz a mile away from the border with gaza where hamas came across on october 7th and attacked several of those neighborhoods and communities. and we have now confirmed that it is the two of them who have now been released. what we have learned and what we were told earlier is that this was on a humanitarian condition, because the mother, judith, we do not believe, is in good health. we're still waiting for more details about how she's doing. what we do know is the idf received these two hostages from the border at the gaza strip. they are now on their way to a military base here inside israel. their family is waiting there for them. and just -- our audience is familiar with them. they've seen the pictures of judith

let's start with kaitlan collins. she's joining us from tel aviv. what do we expect president biden to say tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, it's o only the second time you've seen president biden sit behind that resolute desk in the oval office and address the nation in prime time. i think it speaks to the gravity he is bringing to this message tonight. not only talk about the importance of sending aid here to israel but also more funding for the war in ukraine. taiwan, a major concern he's had that he believes ukraine could have a massive effect on. and also fortifying the u.s. southern border. something you've heard republicans talk about re repeatedly. so in totality, the president is going to be asking congress for a massive package. $100 billion. 10 billion of that we're told is going to be reserved for israel. he says it's an unprecedented ask of the u.s. congress but expect this message about democracy and the importance of preserving that across the world to come through in the president's message tonight. of course, he is driven in part by
