>> and joining me now with their reporting and analysis, cnn's kaitlan collins, julie hersh field davis of the "new york times" and adp chief economist nela richardson. kaitlan, i want to start with you. there is obviously as you saw in those clips some opposition to the go big approach from republicans, but there's also some opposition from within president biden's own party. so what's the white house's plan to sell this relief bill this week? >> well, you saw last week how they were trying to do that and then by the end of the week it really came to this conclusion from president biden when he gave that speech, basically that they are going to go this alone without republicans. so they've continued toin cyst that they want it to be a bipartisan bill, but you are not seeing any congressional republicans sign on to this. whether or not that changes and they can win over some moderates now that president biden is conceding he doesn't believe that $15 medical minimum wage is going to be included, that's another question, but another thing they know is that this week all of the attention i

joining us now is kaitlan collins live in washington. there will be some major departures here from trump. for instance, the possibility of restarting the iran nuclear deal, but on china, for instance, stay the course. so what will be different? what won't? >> even just his approach is going to be so much different. based on what we've been told by white house officials, we should expect president biden is making these two different speeches this morning but he's going to be really talking about this return to the foreign policy stage, even though he's doing it virtually this morning. but the way he's going to be framing it is just this strength of american allies, european allies and the united states. and often those were the ones that were derided by former president trump as tougher to deal with than the united states adversaries at times. so president biden is going to be taking this approach saying that when the united states and our european allies are united, it can present a stronger front against russia. against china. and thes

cnn's kaitlan collins joins me now live. kaitlan, let's start with the actions around u.s.n moving forward? >> well, this is putting a freeze on that trump-led policy to start to redeploy those troops that were stationed in germany. about 12,000, roughly, of them, that the president wanted to redeploy to other countries, bring some of them back home. that's the last president, of course, that i'm talking about. now president biden says he's putting a freeze on that. and that's notable because this is a move that really irritated a lot of european leaders. this has kind of been seen as a cornerstone after world war ii. and so it also got bipartisan criticism from people who said it was a shortsighted move on donald trump's behalf. joe biden said that's not going to be happening. he's putting a freeze to that. that's a reversal of trump's policy. and really what you saw in that speech today was two weeks -- for two weeks we heard joe biden talk about his domestic agenda. now president biden is talking about what it's going to look like with him on the world stage. >> and kait

i want to go to manu raju and kaitlan collins. manu, this is huge. what do you know?rter: they are making a formal request that donald trump testify on monday, february 8th, ahead of his impeachment trial that was expected to begin on february 9th, but they're saying you can come in as early as february 8th and provide your testimony. they're saying they want it done before february 8th and february 11th, and they say they want an answer by the end of the day tomorrow. their argument here is other past presidents have testified before. bill clinton provided testimony while in office, gerald ford presented testimony while in office. donald trump is no longer in office, and their argument is there is no reason for him not to testify. this letter was written by jamie raskin, who is the lead house impeachment manager, sent to donald trump, and it says, if you decline this invitation, we reserve any and all rights, including the right to establish a trial that your refusal to testify supports a strong adverse inference regarding your actions and inaction on january 6. now,

all right, kaitlan collins at the white house, thanks so much. joining us now, democratic senator bob menendez of new jersey introduced the comprehensive immigration bill today. a reminder, 60 votes are needed to pass this legislation. and senator, you know that better than i do. 60 votes for this bill as it is seems unlikely. it makes huge changes to immigration law. it expands worker visas so more non-americans can come to work in the united states. it all but erases restrictions on family-based immigration. it doesn't focus all that much comparatively on border security. what are you willing to change to get 60 votes in the senate? >> jake, we will never know how much reform we can achieve if we never try. i'm not going to wave the white flag before we start. as part of the gang of eight in 2013, we were told it couldn't be done. we ended with 68 votes to past comprehensive immigration reform. unfortunately, speaker boehner and the speaker of the house never gave it a vote, so it didn't see the light of day. otherwise, we wouldn't be talking a

kaitlan collins is live for us. jim acosta is near mar-a-lago where i believe president trump was golfing earlier today. kaitlan, let's start with you. what are you hearing about the case the trump defense team plans to make tomorrow? >> expect it to be a lot shorter than what you saw from democrats. you saw today they finished up earlier than what we saw in the last impeachment trial. they took up a good portion of their time breaking it up from yesterday to today. we're not likely to see that from former president trump's team. i'm told that they expect to finish their arguments by tomorrow. there'd been some questions about that because, of course, one of his attorneys actually requested a delay of the trial so he could observe the sabbath. he said now that he's not going to need to have that delay but he'll just not participate in the proceedings at that time. but i'm told that they expect to make their arguments and finish them up by tomorrow. that would then punt us and move us on to the question session of thi

first, though, i want to get to cnn chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins. kaitlan, there is still this huge problem with communities of color both getting access to the vaccine, having difficulty with that, and also feeling uncomfortable taking it, even as they are sickened and dying in greater numbers. tell us what the vice president is doing to address this issue. >> reporter: well, i think what we're seeing, they're trying to approach both of those. we know the efforts they're making trying to ramp up the supplies of vaccines, because that is the number one issue, to make sure it's there for people to get. the other one they're making clear is probably a big challenge for the next several months is making sure people get it when it's available. today we saw the vice president go to a pharmacy in d.c., trying to talk to people about their fears about getting the coronavirus vaccine, citing her own experience with it, and, of course, talking to those minority communities and how important it is for them to get it as well. this is what she said earlier today

i want to get to cnn's kaitlan collins. she joins us now by phone. kaitlan is our chief white house correspondent. this was very important for the president of the united states to be here and to do this. we know his respect for law enforcement and how he has dealt with grief after the loss of two children. >> that's right. tomorrow actually would have been beau biden's birthday. i heard the conversation you and dana had about of the grief that the president knows all so well. we had an idea from officials but this was not on the schedule until he left the white house earlier tonight and made his way up there to may respects. we did know president biden called the family. that was the point where the white house delayed and lower the flags. of course, president trump was still in office. president biden called the family and spoke with them as well. we had an idea that this could be happening and you saw other leaders that were there and chuck schumer and nancy pelosi as they were bringing in his remains to lie in honor. it is notable as dana was sayi

they've charged more than 200 people, and a source told kaitlan collins that the president was privately voicing concerns that he could be charged in connection with the riot. the criminal investigations are one thing. there are also a number of civil litigations and lawsuits that are underway. in that case the attorney general in washington, d.c. filed a lawsuit against the president's company saying they had misused inauguration funds. that lawsuit is ongoing. his daughter ivanka trump was deposed as part of that lawsuit. in addition, there are also two defamation lawsuits brought against the former president by two women who have accused him of sexual assault. those cases had largely been held up because he was the president of the united states, but he will no longer have that legal shield. in mar-a-lago where the president is living full-time, some of his neighbors have challe lenged that, saying he should not be able to live there full-time. there was a town council meeting in week in palm beach. no decisions were made, but they are going to take the issue up next spring. >> kara s

let start our coverage with our chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins. after the distraction of the trump impeachment trial, the clock is ticking for president biden and democrats to pass the emergency covid-19 relief package. >> reporter: it is, wolf. they hope to do so by next month. that's the new focus in washington because president biden has been in office for almost a month now but so much of that time is defined by the split screen he was sharing with his predecessor as that trial was on going but this is the big focus as he pushed for bipartisanship and allies said that's something he's trying to achieve while he is president. right now, one of his biggest priorities is this new piece of legislation, this coronavirus relief bill and so far, still, no republican support, wolf. with the distraction of former president trump's impeachment trial behind him, president joe biden is forging ahead with his agenda. following a weekend at camp david, biden returned to the white house with one item at the top of his list, getting his covid relief bill thro
