i want to get to kaitlin collins at the white house. kaitlin, sort of dissect what he said because this is a little different than what we heard yesterday. yesterday he was distancing himself from the chant in north carolina, the "send her back" chant. he said he didn't like it. he lied and said he tried to move on quickly and he didn't. he let it fill the room for 15 seconds. but today he deflected questions about the chants and then he praised the crowd. it seems like he might be concerned that he could be upsetting supporters. >> reporter: yeah, you're seeing the president strike a much more defiant tone than what we saw yesterday in the oval office when he was saying he didn't know what his supporters were chanting, that he tried to shut it down. instead today he's focusing on the congresswoman, saying he doesn't like what they have been saying and he stood up for his supporters in north carolina at that rally on wednesday night, calling them patriots and talking about them and then saying he's very displeased with what people like

kaitlin collins is at the white house. it was just two days ago that we saw acosta giving a press conference to defend himself, which was highly criticized afterwards, but it did look like acosta might have a chance to weather all of this. what has happened in the past 48 hours? >> reporter: well, a lot, and a lot had to do with the president of t . even though he had this is alex acosta's decision, we know behind the scenes the president had had a change of tone when it came to his labor secretary. alex acosta came over to the residence to offer his resignation. all of this comes after he held that press conference two days ago at the direction of president trump, who had been praising his work at the labor department privately and downplaying the role that he had in jeffrey epstein's plea deal. after alex acosta came out, the reaction was essentially mixed. some people said it wasn't as bad as they thought it was going to be initially, but then the president started hearing criticism from people over how he conducted him

let's go to cnn's kaitlin collins at the white house. what are you hearing about this visit between these two leaders? >> reporter: well, the president just took a ton of questions from reporters, about 40 minutes worth of questions, sitting in the oval office with the prime minister of pakistan. and now after saying just last week that the president was not going to watch robert mueller's testimony on wednesday, he just told reporters he might watch a little bit of it. he renewed his attacks on former special counsel robert mueller, saying and claiming that he's conflicted, even though in robert mueller's report it shows the president's own aides said that argument was petty and ridiculous. of course the president is continuing to frame what is going to happen on wednesday as a do-over for democrats. that's how the president and his allies have been framing that in the last several days. it looks like that's going to be the tactic they continue up until wednesday. that's not all. the president touched on a slew of issues. one big one wa

. >> let's get straight to kaitlin collins live at the white house. is this as presented a decision just by the labor secretary on his own? >> reporter: john, the president said alex acosta called him this morning and came over to the white house to offer his resignation because he saw the epstein deal as something that was going to hang over the administration. while the president said, hey, it's alex acosta's idea to resign, not mine, this certainly comes as a relief to the president who based on our reporting had been voicing skepticism about acosta and whether or not that news conference he held had done enough to calm the uproar over his role in jeffrey epstein's plea deal. we reported initially the president, who urged alex acosta to go out and defend himself was favorable in his initial reception to that press conference, telling people he thought he did a fine job. after the president was hearing criticism from other people who thought alex acosta had not done enough to defend himself in that press conference where he did not offer an explicit
