let's bring in our white house reporter kaitlyn collins. she's over at the white house. kaitlyn, so what's behind the president's latest refusal to call out russia and instead condemn his predecessor, president obama? >> reporter: well, wolf, the president says he's been much tougher on russia than obama never was, but that's just simply not the case here, because for well over a year here that trump has been in office he has repeatedly dogged russian interference in the election calling it phony, a witch hunt, fake news, a hoax. there are those things. then he's also given weight to these denials by vladimir putin that russia meddle ld d in the e house as well. they said they are not going to telegraph what the president's moves would be to punish russia, but why won't they condemn what we saw in that stunning indictment by the special counsel on friday? to answer your question there, wolf, the president believes any admission that russia did interfere in the 2016 election, they are simply undermining his win, his legitimacy in the fact that he is president now. >> kait

i want to bring in white house reporter kaitlyn collins now. we just watched a very interesting white house briefing. there had been some question about where the president stood on what seemed to be his support of increasing the age limit for purchasing an ar-15 style rifle. it seemed as if he had backed off on that. we heard from the press secretary. no, he says he's standing firm on that. there are a lot of other policies. we don't know exactly where the white house is on them. >> yeah, brianna. sarah sanders did just explicitly say that the president does still support raising the minimum age to buy certain firearms from 18 to 21. and that answer today very explicit there, comes after it was very vague yesterday whether or not the president still support this had policy and after several mixed answers with deputy press secretaries last night and today. the press is now saying that the president does still support that. you might wonder why the white house has to support that the president still supports a policy that he just raised the idea

kaitlyn talked about the way his life change in the white house. what his access is. it is also important to think of how the president's life will change. i'm sure he talked about the highly classified information. his circle of advisers and people he relies on for information all of a sudden is very different. kushner coming in was sort of the secretary of everything. right? he had this huge unwieldy portfolio. the president at one point said if anybody can solve the crisis in the middle east and move toward middle east peace, it would be kushner. and now i think in so many ways, his portfolio is diminished. >> you've been reporting on the white house chief of staff john kelly. he's been telling people according the your reporting that he is frustrated with jared and his wife ivanka. >> he's been very frustrated with them. and this goes from them pushing for them to come into the white house, becoming the chief of staff. they thought he would stop people from leaking. they didn't necessarily realize how far that restraint would go. he's since grown very frustrated w

that those are sort are the two key takeaways from his much more detailed argument. >> do you think kaitlyn, as i look at this, will this be enough to counter the gop memo? >> i think it's really problematic here that this house intelligence committee has over the past year kind of spiralled into a partisan kind of chaotic committee when it was traditional a bastian of partisanship and nonpartisans p nonpartisanship. for the general public i, think go going to be difficult and see confirmation bias going on here. as kelly mentioned the republican memo has been out there now for a little while and people have been able to digest that. the democratic memo, i think should come under scrutiny as well. but and i think you'll see a lot of people on the democratic side rally around that. but what to believe when there's so much partisanship involved in analyzing intelligence is a very difficult for the public to kind of get a better picture of what's going on here, particularly since we won't be able to see the underlying intelligence and particularly since the president is championing one side of

in fact, a white house official told our colleague kaitlyn collins, quote, that it would be tough to be worse than the grand durbin proposal, but this is actually worse. dana, the reason why aides in both parties expect the government to remain open beyond thursday because they said if the government is still open, the senate will take up daca on the floor. here's how you need to view this bipartisan proposal. as one of the proposals the senators are trying to put on the table, service either a base bill or some type of amendment to that process on the floor. there are a lot of questions going forward, most notably, no matter what the senate does, what are house republicans going to do and will they bless whatever the senate does? there is also another bipartisan meeting this afternoon behind closed doors on this issue trying to figure out some pathway forward on the senate floor. these are kind of the dynamics that are in play that lawmakers suspect will allow the government to stay open for a couple more weeks starting on thursday, but the big question is will there be any kind of
