abc's diana perez has all the details for us. >> reporter: kaleb langdale is all-smiles. a day earlier, this florida teenager barely escaped the jaws of death. langdale and his friends took a dip in the caloosahatchee river. >> i was 50 yards from my bank. and my friend starts yelling gator. >> reporter: within seconds, the 17-year-old found himself face-to-face with a 10 1/2-foot killer. >> when the gator was about right here from me, i take my left hand and i grab the skin underneath him, trying to control him. >> reporter: the gator grabs langdale under water. but the quick-thinking teen manages to swim away. the gator caught up and bit right into his right arm. >> he started pulling me down. i took my feet and i put it on his mouth. and i tried to jerk my arm off. and i started swimming back. i felt like a little tug. >> reporter: the gator pulled him underwater once more. but this time, langdale broke free for good. >> he came up out of the water like superman or something. waving to us, saying, hey, my arm's gone. call an ambulance. >> reporter: his mother raced to

how i spent my summer vacation story anybody would choose if they had a choice but 17-year-old kaleb langdalet. the alligator that almost killed him four days ago wasn't asking for any opinions. the florida teenager lost the lower half of his right arm but survived the attack thanks to his own quick thinking. and a 911 call by a friend just moments after kaleb was attacked. listen. >> 911, what's your emergency? >> hello? >> yes, this is 911. >> a gator just got my friend. he's in the water. >> kaleb gave himself first aid to try to stop his bleeding. he was eventually airlifted to a hospital. authorities later caught and killed the alligator. they were able to retrieve kaleb's arm but it was too late to reattach it. this isn't how he planned to start his senior year of high school in the fall. considering what happened in the terrifying moments underwater, it's remarkable he's alive. we had a chance to speak earlier. >> so, fred, it's been a week, pretty amazing week for you. how you doing? >> pretty good. >> yeah, yeah. are you in a lot of pain? what kind of things have you been doing to tr
