the supervisors basically was kind of mocking me like, oh you're saying poor kalina?she's going to do without her mommy? and that of course shut me up. so the night of the move we had to deploy the nets to separate them and get kalina into the med pool and katina was generally a quiet whale. she was not an overly vocal whale. after kalina was removed from the scene and put on the truck and taken to the airport and her mom katina was left in the pool, she stayed in the corner of the pool, like, literally just shaking and screaming, screeching crying like i'd never seen her do anything like that. and the other females in the pool maybe once or twice during the night they would come out and check on her and she would screech and cry and they would just run back. there was nothing that you could call that watching it, besides grief. >> those are not your whales. you know, you love them, and you think i'm the one that touches them, feeds them, keeps them alive, gives them the care that they need. they are not your whales. they own them. kastka and katara were very close. k

flooding wiped out a village in alaska called kalina.what is amazing is we read a lot of issues, we had a whole village wiped out by flooding and no place to evacuate in the closest place was 207 miles away it all had to beat them by air to move these people out quickly and now they are trying to rebuild it in a short time. winter has vetted and it's also very difficult. people talk about climate change. they want to debate the science but i'm telling you climate change is current. my state is the example of what the impacts are and it is extreme and we are seeing impacts economic way and from all levels. our state has the longest coastline in the united states. it has incredible beauty and has enormous vulnerabilities. alaska's unique position as an arctic state resents a variety of advantages to leverage the challenges to overcome this extreme issue. i have to tell you all alaska is clearly on the frontline in dealing with the issue of climate change. we have our own task force set up and we have been active in it. we have focused on w

kalina's language arts class students learn vocabulary notches with flash cards but with on line video. and mrs. stover's math class, i was just over with ms. stover. students bring their tablets home to watch lectures about concepts like rational numbers and ratios and use classroom time applying this concept to the real world. so technology allows teachers here to spend more time being creative and less time teaching to the test, giving continual feed that, being able to get a point where young person is having trouble because they are able to see their work right away in a pretty efficient way. and i will say, i was just in a classroom where there was a lesson plan that was organized around the curiosity rover on mars and the young people there were doing some amazing stuff, making their own ibooks with video and multimedia. as i was walking out i was telling steny hoyer i remember using glue sticks and scissors to cut stuff out. it didn't look very good. these guys were making books that you could publish. but it makes learning exciting and makes it interesting. if you are studying
