it's so that he can seek treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. 37-year-old jason kander servedn afghanistan. he says he visited the v.a. on monday and decided to focus on his mental health. in a statement, he says, i'm done hiding this. when i wrote in my book that i was lucky to not have ptsd, i was just trying to convince myself, and i wasn't sharing the full picture. i still have nightmares. i am depressed. a fellow veteran who runs a charity helping service members praised kander's decision. >> i think it kind of dispels the stigma of pts that, hey, it's for veterans that can't hang. it's pretty brave, you know, in that he's doing the right thing for himself, his family. >> kander, who lost a close senate race in 2016, says until now he was too scared to acknowledge his symptoms and was afraid of the stigma. >>> well, senator chuck grassley is calling out the air force for wasteful spending after finding out that a squadron in california is buying metal coffee cups for more than $1,200 apiece. over the past three years they've reportedly shelled out $56,000 for the cups at

jason kander write ins his book what he went through when he was serving overseas.ys i felt fearful way beyond anything. this was for the first time the raw physical fear of being killed. he talks about being riddled with dpilt aguilt and anger, stg with nightmares when he got back. >> i went through it myself after serving as an infantry soldier in iraq, but it can be an lifelong struggle. he also talked about how he had reached out to the veterans crisis line. made advocated for the creation of that service, and we continue to promote it. there are other alternatives, too. if you're a veteran struggling not just with homelessness but you can reach out and we'll support you. also in your last segment you were talking about military sexual trauma. that's part of what our veterans are dealing with as well. they're stepping forward to get help and to inspire authorities to do the same. >> we read it in the intro there, kander talking about how this could potentially affect his political future. and we went to kansas and talked to some folks about what they had to say.
