yes, i believe kansas is relevant to our moment. now, in many ways it's true that president obama's speech is actually less radical than fdr's -- as in theodore roosevelt's speech was, though there is this wonderful moment in the kansas speech where t.r. talks about his being accused of being socialist and that a socialist paper in kansas took this as a great insult to socialism. and i think that president obama probably smiled when he read that part of the kansas speech. we could probably discuss this, as many of you know, there is a great argument between contemporary progressives and conservatives over what the progressive era was really about. and matt channeled some of this and reflected some of this. my conservative friends like to talk about progressives as being primarily about centralization of government, rule by experts and some kind of elitism. what progressives who defend their tradition would argue, they'd acknowledge, by the way, some real difficulties. some progressives were really caught up in the racism of that tim

that town in eastern kansas certainly does have a storied pass. just a little over 100 years ago on august 31st, 1910, former president theodore roosevelt mounted a kitchen table on the grounds of the 22-acre state park he was helping to dedicate in osawatomie, john brown state park, and delivered what has gone down in history as his new nationalism speech. it certainly wouldn't have gone down in history as his john brown speech since the fiery abolitionist who had battled pro-slavery raiders on that spot in the days of bloody kansas slabbed only two cursory mentions in t.r.'s speech. much to the relief of his advisers, i should add, who knew that t.r. regarded himself as a historian, although the corporations of the day weren't about to pay him for his historic advice. the new nationalism speech would be described by one of t.r.'s many biographers, george mallory, as, quote, the most radical speech ever given by an ex-president. his concepts to the extent of which a powerful federal government could regulate and use private property in the intere

these pictures came to us from kansas. this was near hush chin son, kansas, harveyville. half the town sustained damage. it was one little funnel there. the big breaking piece of news overnight, it looks like bran son, missouri, it's near joplin, hit by a tornado last night. does not appear to be a big, devastating tornado like the one that hit joplin. the entertainment district has been hit. the roof of a waurl mart has reported to be collapsed. best western is supposed to have major damage. no reports of any fatalities out of bran son. it does appear that bran son, missouri, was hit by a pretty strong tornado overnight. overall, ten tornado reports. these show where they occurred around the greater springfield area and a couple in areas of kansas. we have a tornado warning still. possibility of one occurring now along the arkansas missouri border. we'll watch that as that storm approaches. a tornado just north of cape gerardo. now crossing the mississippi into southern portions of illinois. st. louis, you are now safe. we'll watch the severe storms continuing as we go t
