we've seen thunder snow here in this kansas city area and in kansas as well. much of the midwest is getting slammed with this system. the roadways are now covered with several inches of snow on top of the ice and freezing rain that fell yesterday. because of that, the highways have been a mess. we've seen dozens of wreck, specifically across kansas, and a lot of those with injuries. here in the city, the plows have been out basically non-stop to try and clean up the roadways. earlier, i rode with the kansas city city manager who's been out taking a shift as a plow driver. >> this is going to be one of the most historic storms kansas city has seen. we haven't seen more than 10 inches in 30 years. we're expecting that today. but we've been out for days. we started pretreating the roads friday, 36 hours in advance of any snowfall or ice to make sure we were as prepared as we could be. >> reporter: driving all morning, didn't get a lot of sleep last night. everyone's asking everyone to stay home, not go out on the roads. they say first responders have gotten stuck

kansas was hit particularly hard. up to 18 inches of snow in some parts of kansas, something they haven't seen in decades. in nearby kansas city, missouri we already know they've seen the fourth largest single calendar date of snowfall record. eight states now from kansas to new jersey have already declared states of emergency. michelle grossman is tracking the storm but let's start with maggie vespa and hard-hit kansas city missouri. we are talking some of the most snow they've ever seen. how is that city and the surrounding area handling all of this? >> it's basically a ghost town. look at the amount of snow that came down, but you can tell my mouth isn't moving that well because it is painfully cold, like a wind chill of zero. it was negative for when we woke up this morning. check out this car behind us. that hasn't moved all weekend. the big problem here, this was an especially extreme storm. it's snow on top of sheets of ice on these roads. it'll take a long time to plow all the snow and even under it because it

we've already had snow totals over a foot in parts of kansas, 14 more than 14in in manhattan, kansas,n in north chapman. and we've also already had ice reports over a half an inch in parts of kansas and missouri. this is incredibly important to monitor because when ice gets over a quarter of an inch, it really weighs down those tree limbs and power lines and could cause a problem with power. and we are already starting to see that we have some power problems for parts of kentucky, illinois, missouri, and even for the severe weather side in texas, amounting to nearing 180,000 customers in the dark. this will be a problem as we get really cold air that comes in. we'll need people to have access to heat. we've got the alerts stretching more than a thousand miles. still, with some blizzard warnings in effect for kansas city, you still have an ice storm warning for parts of missouri and illinois and the winter storm warnings now stretch to the east coast, including d.c. waking up to some pretty significant snow for them for the first time in a couple of years. tornado watches continue as w

manhattan, kansas, 14in, 18in in north chapman, kansas.nd we've had some of these ice totals over a half an inch. doesn't seem like a lot, but that half an inch of ice will really weigh down power lines and cause some problems with power outages. so again, some of these totals here for the ice are pretty hefty. we are already seeing more than 150,000 customers without power, some of them from the severe storms in texas and then some of them in the midwest. from the heavy snow, that ice that i was just talking about and some of the gusty winds that are coming with this as well. the winter alerts stretch more than 1300 miles. we've got blizzard warnings in effect for parts of kansas city. the winter storm warnings stretch all the way to the d.c. area, where they could see totals over eight inches. and then we still have the icing concerns again. parts of missouri, illinois and kansas. we still have a tornado watch that's in effect as well through the evening because of this really intense line of storms, thunderstorms organizing into a line.

i get these extremes how like cutting the kansas city saw there. the 4th grade is no false single day snowball on record 11 inches, which is roughly about $2627.00 centimeters and they have regular same bath in 19 o 4. this entire system track about 2200 kilometers across the entire country. and we saw some really impressive totals with it. so in addition to kansas, missouri, ohio saw some really bad totals and it was really just the snow. it was a freezing rain that came down to a purchase of it, a centimeter and a half by secretion. nothing of power to so many people as an earlier this afternoon, roughly 300000 americans were without power. and it'll take a while to get the lights back on for them because you know, the freezing rain took the lines down. there's no warm up any time soon. the other thing that i think is really worth mentioning is that in about 3 ish day is we'll have another significant winter storm coming in from texas all way in the middle at the co sign. eventually, new england will see upwards of probably 1015 centimeters worth
