lessons learned and why that cap persists, an associate professor at the university of missouri, kansas cityalso the author of "the best way to rob a bank used to own one." thank you for joining me. you are a white-collar criminologist. what is the mindset on wall street that created this crisis in the first place? >> making money. the key thing about accounting control fraud is, in the words of the nobel prize winner in economics, it is a sure thing. you're mathematically guaranteed to report record profits. they are fictional, but you will report record profits in the near-term with modern executive compensation, the senior officers instantly made wealthy. the bank will suffer catastrophic losses, but the controlling officers will walk away wealthy, as they did at lehman brothers, where they walked away with hundreds of millions or even billionaires. >> recently, a new york times interview laid out the inside talks of the security exchange commission deliberations on whether to charge the executive of lehman brothers, and after some back and forth, he concluded that suing the bank executiv

if you are an american sitting back in kansas city and you're wondering about job creation or your child is currently covered under obama care. now you're hearing, wait, they are going to shut down the government so they can take away health care from my kid but they are spending their day doing nothing. it's immoral what we're seeing right now. particularly, as we know, it's going to the senate. the senate is going to send something back that doesn't have what they want and chaos all over again. >> that's the question, jonathan, the chaos, sort of what happens when the inevitable happens, the senate does what it's going to do, strip out the shutdown piece of this, the defund piece of this. whether or not there's anything boehner can offer to his caucus that would placate them and get them to not shut down the government. i think that's pretty much a huge question mark. >> that's true. i think they are okay with it. they certainly want to. there is a large element of fear going on here. they are passing it onto the senate so they can show the senate was the one that forced the government

>> well, president obama just wrapped up his remarks here in kansas city, missouri. set against the back drop of this ford plant which he has argued has come roaring back since the recession. this is one of a series of speeches he's given this week to tout the progress that has been made since the economy collapsed five years ago. but of course, part of his main message was aimed squarely at republicans and said to congress, do your job. this after the house earlier today passed that temporary spending measure which you mess mention which would fund the government temporarily but defund the president's health care bill. president obama with very strong words. i anticipate we'll continue to hear those words and likely hear about this during his weekly address released tomorrow. and of course the republicans right now sharply divided over how to proceed. you have more conservative republicans like peter king of new york calling members of his party come kaz zees and the bill has no chance of passing through the senate. so the bottom line is, a government shut down woul

rain, but unfortunately, i think we're going to stay dry here in minneapolis down into omaha and kansas cityrapid city into denver. i think we could see showers and thunderstorms firing up. in the northwest, we have an area of low pressure, making its way on that it's going to usher in more showers and thunderstorms out there along i-five from seattle into portland. as a matter of fact, yesterday, we had some gusty thunderstorms producing hail about two inches in diameter. in addition to that, we also had torrential downpours. you are looking at footage that came in out of seattle and heavy rain did flood the streets. folks had a lot to contend with out on the roadways, looking towards the northwest, we are going to continue to see showers push into oregon and into the seattle area. again, if you're traveling along i-five, these storms could turn gusty, hail about two-inches in diameter in addition to the wind. you can feel the gusty winds into western portions of montana. seattle, the next several days friday into saturday, the afternoon hours will climb to 75 into the day. sunday into mond
