we are under a cold weather advisory here in kansas city all the way until 11:00 a.m. local time. issue is we are looking at 33,000 customers across the show me state of missouri that are without power. and kansas though, thankfully, we are fairing quite a bit better looking at just about 500 total customers that are without power at this time. so those utility crews have been working around the clock to try to get that power restored as well as those snow removal crews hats off to them. we still have snow on the ground but it looks significantly better than it did especially this time yesterday morning. we have a pretty thick layer of ice that is currently under all of this snow which has made things very treacherous. we know a lot of the roads, unfortunately, were very slick, especially on saturday afternoon and sunday that led to countless accidents. and so at least as of this morning, roads are still snow-covered but they are passible. kansas city international airport does still we main closed at this time, guys? >> steve: all right, kendall thank you very much live report. >>

in nearby kansas city, missouri we already know they've seen the fourth largest single calendar date of snowfall record. eight states now from kansas to new jersey have already declared states of emergency. michelle grossman is tracking the storm but let's start with maggie vespa and hard-hit kansas city missouri. we are talking some of the most snow they've ever seen. how is that city and the surrounding area handling all of this? >> it's basically a ghost town. look at the amount of snow that came down, but you can tell my mouth isn't moving that well because it is painfully cold, like a wind chill of zero. it was negative for when we woke up this morning. check out this car behind us. that hasn't moved all weekend. the big problem here, this was an especially extreme storm. it's snow on top of sheets of ice on these roads. it'll take a long time to plow all the snow and even under it because it's so cold out, these treacherous conditions remain. highways across the midwest were just such a mess over the weekend. dozens and dozens of crashes, a lot of authorities say with injuries.

i get these extremes how like cutting the kansas city saw there. the 4th grade is no false single day snowball on record 11 inches, which is roughly about $2627.00 centimeters and they have regular same bath in 19 o 4. this entire system track about 2200 kilometers across the entire country. and we saw some really impressive totals with it. so in addition to kansas, missouri, ohio saw some really bad totals and it was really just the snow. it was a freezing rain that came down to a purchase of it, a centimeter and a half by secretion. nothing of power to so many people as an earlier this afternoon, roughly 300000 americans were without power. and it'll take a while to get the lights back on for them because you know, the freezing rain took the lines down. there's no warm up any time soon. the other thing that i think is really worth mentioning is that in about 3 ish day is we'll have another significant winter storm coming in from texas all way in the middle at the co sign. eventually, new england will see upwards of probably 1015 centimeters worth

and "fox weather" meteorologist kendall smith is live in kansas city missouri for the very latest.is cold out here following the first major winter storm of the season that is blasting kansas city over the weekend. we picked up quite a bit is no all around me we picked up the kansas of the international airport 11 inches which is the 12th largest snow vent we've ever had on record in kansas city. you can see the snow is piled high and we have temperatures that are hovering around 11 degrees. we factor the wind out of the north it is biden. it feels like negative three right now. it's only going to continue to drop in the factor numerous people without in the state of missouri were looking at 33000 customers statewide without power, the state of kansas is faring better hovering about 1400 customers without power. that is because of what the storm brought it. it brought in the heavy snow india brought in quite a bit of ice, freezing rain was a big issue. we picked up half an inch of ice in some locations and we even had thunder snow which i was able to experience live firsthand yeste

we have blizzard warnings in effect for parts of kansas, including kansas city. ice storm warning across parts of south central missouri, southern illinois, where you have the ice really stacking up and the winter storm warnings stretch all the way to dc, where you wake up with a sloppy mess in the nation's capital by tomorrow morning. plus, you have the tornado watch that's in effect through 6:00 this evening from southern arkansas, across louisiana, down into eastern texas, where we have the possibility of a few tornadoes, some of which could be strong. that is the wording from the storm prediction center. you've got a line of severe thunderstorms. severe thunderstorm warnings in effect for part of that line where you get that push of damaging winds up to 60mph. so again multi threat right. you have the winter threat with the snow and the ice to the north. plus you have all the severe storms along the gulf coast. a lot of it keeping us on our toes. so as we go through the day today this continues to charge eastward. by midnight tonight we're looking at the snow

so where i'm located right here is in downtown kansas city. actually grew up just to the south of here and it's a beautiful area. in fact, you can see the gorgeous skyline right behind me. we're sitting though at a frigid 25 degrees, but our wind chill is at 15, so it is bone chillingly cold and we are just hours away from the onset of this very impactful winter storm. in fact, freezing rain, that's going to be what type of precipitation we deal with first. freezing rain over to sleet and eventually over to snow. the question how much snow are we going to see in places like kansas city? well, we could see up to a foot of snow. the forecast calling for 8 to 12 inches of snow for places like kansas city and some of the surrounding communities, a little further to the east, places like st. louis, slightly lesser totals, but still impactful, five to eight inches certainly not out of the realm of possibility. and the other main weather headline of all of this, we could be talking about crippling ice. anywhere between about a quarter to a half inch
