our bullpen didn't hold. that has been the story all yearlong. >> tough. tough. that was the disappointed reaction at rickey's sports bar in san leandro. >>> check out this headline mistake on mlb.com. just after the game ended someone posted the wrong story saying the royals had lost to the as . dennis will be along to take us into the locker room to hear from as players later in sports. >>> tonight, the president of a pop warner football team in san jose is having second thoughts on where his team practices. betty yu tells us what happened to one of the parents. >> reporter: richard watkins was shot outside of his home just a few blocks away from this field. san jose are searching for the gunman and the motive. the crowd at the san jose football practice is a bit quieter tonight without the team's biggest supporter in the stands. >> he had the crowd going every game. he was the loudest parent getting them pumped up. >> reporter: 24-year-old richard watkins was a proud father of two girls an had a baby boy on the way. he was a regular on the field too. he would learn and practice the cheers alongside his daughter. >> saturday, he was cheering with his daughters cheer team and he was just out there pumping up the crowd. just to hear about what happened, it was just devastating. >> reporter: last saturday, richard was killed by a stray bullet standing outside his san jose home where loved ones have created a makeshift memorial. police say a relative came to visit the family around 9:00 p.m. as richard directed him to a parking spot, one gunman confronted his relative who was still in the car and opened fire. he avoided being hit, but richard could not. >> he was always so fun loving, huge smile on his face. >> reporter: his family both son and off the field says no one had any reason to harm richard. san jose police say there was no contact or exchange between the gunman and richard and his relative. and neither was part of a gang. san jose police say they are looking at this shooting as a possible case of mistaken identity. this area is also known to have a lot of gang activity which is why the team's president says that he is considering moving the practices to another field. we spoke to a lot of concerned parents tonight who were worried about their child's safety in light of this shooting. liz? >> thanks betty. >>> well california has some new gun laws in the books tonight. one allows relatives to get a court order to take away a family member's right to own a gun if there is a sign of mental disability. the deputy thought the fake gun andy lopez was real. this new law will make fake guns look artificial. >> they have been made to look real to grab the attention to kids who buy them. >>> we have more information on the first case of ebola in the u.s. we know the patient has spent some time in africa, but tonight, the big question, which airline did he take? well andria borba says well, you still have to pay attention to what is going on around you. >> reporter: by the time this woman realized she was a victim, she was already out $3,000 in purchases she didn't make. set your stopwatch. in three-and-a-half minutes, the blond in the bottom right will go from lady who lunches to crime victim. call it anatomy of a wallet snatching. watch this woman enter the restaurant tender greens. in under a minks she has her mark. >> she identifies the victim here sitting next to the victim. >> reporter: former fbi agent and president of investigations rick smith says the crime is nearly textbook. while the victim is literally and figuratively out to lunch chatting and eating, the woman moving in. >> it takes time, but she knows she has time because the victim hadn't noticed anything. >> reporter: sitting next to the victim, the suspect strikes emptying the contents of the wallet into her bra. putting the wallet back in and walking away. >> someone will walk into the floor of a law firm and steal a purse or a wallet. run outside, give it to someone else on the street and that person gives it to a third person. >> reporter: smith says the suspect isn't sophisticated but has probably done this before and will do it again unless the surveillance video causes someone to drop a dime. >> she is a criminal, probably a drug addict and she will do it again because she doesn't want to stop. >> reporter: there are seven different cameras inside tender greens. you only saw one of the angles there. walnut creek police have all of those angles and the exteriors. live in walnut creek, andria borba, kpix5. >> they are tricky. a thief gave palo alto police the slip. dominique calf was wanted for passing a phony check at bank of america. he spent hours inside a house on everett court before he gave himself up. the homeowner had no ideas this guy was wanted. >> basically gave him some food. took care of him for a while and offered him a ride out of town unbeknownst to the homeowner this was a dangerous criminal. >> he was also wanted in oklahoma for a sex crime with a minor. >>> it is called the green rush. so many people from all over the world coming to northern california to grow pot. the law says it has to be for medicine but as joe vasquez found out, it is all too easy to gain the system with hardly any legal consequences. >> reporter: from the skies, it is painfully obvious. the rivers are running dry, but not just because of the drought in humboldt county, but the thousands of marijuana grows. they require thousands of gallons of water per day and growers are taking water from rivers an streams without a state permit. that is illegal. but we found very few marijuana growers ever go to prison. take the case of this operation run last year by a group of bulgarian nationals. sheriff's deputies destroyed hundreds of plants. hundreds of trees had been cut down to make room and a creek was drained. valentine maranov was the ring leader who got a $300,000 civil fine but no criminal charges. last year, 109 people were arrested for marijuana cultivation. only seven were convicted. in the last five years not one single cultivation case has gone to trial in humboldt county. none. >> there is no inaction on my part. >> reporter: the district attorney says not to blame him. it is california's much too vague marijuana laws. under the compassionate use act, you can grow marijuana for medical use and form a co-op and grow communally. but every county has regulations on how many plants are allowed and humboldt has no limits at all so people use the system. >> we arrive at the sites for hundreds of plants. completely illegal activity. look at the impact on our community and 100 plus recommendations will surface and everyone is like, my part of this massive grow is completely lawful. whether they are lawful or not, since the burden of proof is beyond a reasonable doubt for us, we have to prove it unanimously to 12 jurors, it is often a burden of proof we are not able to prevail at trial. >> reporter: so was he operating a california legal patient co-op or growing it for an illegal operation?
