we think that the former president violated the gag order >> kara scannell still with us, kara, what sort of timeline could we be looking at for an eventual decision? >> well, the judge has these filings as of today, so as elliott was saying, he wanted digest them, there are complicated issues about the first amendment and political speech. so he will likely want to do a little research into them as well. but he did spend some time on this in the beginning at the very start of this case, prosecutors wanted there to be some order or directed toward trump about his speech. and the judge was very clear at the beginning, he didn't want to impose a gag order in this case because he recognized trump's right to free speech. now the analysis here, since he did impose a gag order, and now that people are asking to extend it, he will digest the law here about what it says about how expansive the gag order can be, and whether it should protect the family numbers of some of these people. the other thing that judge has considered are the threats that the prosecutor's office had received after tru

cnn's kara scannell joins me now. if we have to break away to the secretary period of state, but what more can you tell us? it sounds as though trump is once again trying to dance right up to that line that the judges laid out saying you know, you can go this far, but no farther. >> yeah i mean, immediately after the just hours after the judge issued this gag order last night, donald trump is up again this time targeting the judge and the judge has made clear he is not part of this gag order. he is fair game and it's all the past gag orders that trump has faced is also kind of have that same contour and trump is taking advantage of that log which and more attacks today. but the judge expanded the gag order, which only protected prosecutors, witnesses, and jurors from being the subject of trump's attacks to now, including family members of his as well as the manhattan district attorney, alvin bragg's family, and he did this at the request of manhattan prosecutors who brought this to the judge's attention given the on sl

cnn's kara scannell is outside the courthouse for us >> kara, what happened? >> kate, the whole sentencing hearing took less than five minutes. alan weisselberg walked into the courtroom, but he is not walking out. he was handcuffed and we'll begin serving his sentence today. so the judge went through this very quickly. she asked alan weisselberg if he had anything he wanted to say today. he said no, your honor. the judge said that i will send it due to the agreed five month prison sentence and that is what she did. and then after that, the officers came over, cuffed weisselberg behind his back and escorted him out of the courtroom so he will begin serving this five months sentence for perjury, as you know, this is the second time he's pleaded guilty. the first time to tax fraud charges in that case. he also got a five month and sentence, ended up serving about 100 days in rikers island. it's possible that's how that will go this time, but this is now the second time for donald trump's former chief financial officer for a longtime associate, has pleaded guilty

he also previously rejected cnn's kara scannell is following this forest in new york. kara, what's the latest? this tier >> it riana, a lot of motions in just these final days before a jury selection is set to begin in this case. now the one emotion that you mentioned, the recusal motion, trump's lawyers are asking the judge to recuse himself from this case based on work that his daughter does for a political consulting company, that company has in the past on work for the i didn't campaign and for the harris campaign and they say that trump's daughter, excuse me, the judge's daughter stands to benefit financially from the trial because the trial will produce fodder for some democrats and trump rivals to fundraise off of. now the prosecutors in the case say that the judge has already looked at this. he's already we've rejected a he consulted with an advisory on judicial ethics who said it was not the grounds to recuse and they also argue that the filing offers no direct evidence that any of the clients would stand to profit or that his daughter would profit. and so they

. >> cnn's kara scannell was in court for all this. kara, how attentive? >> word jurors, as all of this sleeves was displayed before them jake, it was a very short court session today. >> david pecker was on the and for just over two hours. and during his testimony, the jurors appear to be paying close attention. you could see when pecker was testifying, he often looked at the jury box when he was answering some of the questions. and you could see the jurors eyes following him back to the prosecutor, who would then ask the follow-up question. a bit like a tennis match for their heads going back and forth. we also saw there was some evidence introduced today, some emails. this agreement, the that was painted trump's the doorman at trump tower that came into evidence and you can see the jurors looking down at the monitors. they all have a monitor that shows what the email is that's being displayed to the courtroom and also to them individually. so we saw a lot of them looking down, paying attention to the exhibits that were being entered into evidence today,

now, just 12 days away, cnn's kara scannell joins us with how his latest to delay attempt failed. so what's the former president been asking for now? >> so donald trump's team had asked the judge overseeing the new york case to delay it until the supreme court decides presidential immunity questions in a different federal case in washington dc related to the election subversion indictment. and then the judge today come me out with the ruling denying this motion, saying, frankly that trump has made it too late. he initially filed this motion on march 7. that was when this trial was scheduled to begin on march 25th, judge said that was just way too close. he wrote the fact that the defendant waited until amir 17 days prior to the scheduled trial date of march 25, 2024 so file the motion raises real questions about the sincerity and actual purpose of the motion. he also mentioned that the notion of presidential immunity was something that trump knew because he was using it in the federal case. but he also tried to use it in this very case to try to move it into federal court. a feder

cnn's kara scannell is joining us from new york, where they're new reporting. what can you tell us about this new filing? this latest filing, kara yeah. >> well, if this latest filing is another attempt to appeal some of the rulings by judge juan merchan, who is overseeing the hush-money criminal case in this new filing, trump's attorneys are asked, are going to the appeals court to challenge the judge is denial of their motion for that about presidential immunity. they want the judge to postpone the trial until the supreme court decides the issue of presidential immunity. the judge had denied that, saying it was untimely, it was too late before the trial for them to raise this. they also want to challenge him his oversight of the case, saying that he should recuse himself from the case based on work his daughter does for a political firm that works for democrats. the judge hasn't actually formally ruled on that recusal war ruling. but they're already taken this to the appeals court. now the documents are still loading on the docket, but right now, what we could

and i can turn to kara scannell here on this because the first one we heard about was a juror who was a woman who apparently posted something on facebook of a celebration in the year 2020. we don't know whether it was around the election time or what she was questioned about, whether it was bias. she said no, which is a celebration. she was foaming from afar and new york, she was not released. but the second juror different story. yeah, that's second jurors, a male juror, and he they had found trump's team had found posts from him back in 2017 on one of the posts he was criticizing the travel ban and the lawfulness other than another, he said, quote, lock him up. and so the judge said that he didn't have a problem with it. this post about the travel ban, but he said because he's saying lock him up and that is exactly what could potentially happen in this case. he decided to strike that juror for cause, but it was also in this process that the judge said, you know, we're not going to do this with every juror. you have to trump i've seen you have to find a respectful way to bring this u
