but what's interesting, john, is that we did learn last night again from cnn's kara scannell, that the mangione family, they're actually the ones who hired that high powered defense attorney who is planning on representing him when it comes to those, again, more serious new york charges. so a lot of interesting dynamics at play here. clearly a lot of attention on this case outside of this courthouse today. but the main thing, john, is that in maybe an hour, maybe a little bit more, this particular chapter of the mangione case here in pennsylvania may be coming to a close. john. >> the next one just beginning. again, a lot of developments unfolding right where you are. danny freeman. we'll come back to you in a little bit. thank you very much for your reporting, kate. >> so joining us right now to talk more about this is cnn senior legal analyst elie honig and cnn's senior law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. thanks, guys, for being here. elie, let's just first work through the extradition piece. he's not going to fight it legally, procedurally. what does this then kick off? well, thi

let's go to kara scannell. kara, you are now out of court as the day has concluded for luigi mangione. tell us what you saw during the proceedings well, it was a packed courtroom. >> mangione was led into the courtroom by two u.s. marshals. he was changed from that orange jumpsuit into street clothes, a white button down shirt, a three quarter zip navy overshirt and khaki pants. he was shackled at the ankles and his hands were clasped in front of him, but but not shackled. so he entered. he sat down. he was quiet throughout the proceedings, didn't make many facial expressions. he did acknowledge he understood his rights. when the judge read them to him, he said he understood the charges against him at all times. just answering very briefly. yes. he consulted with his attorneys and at some point he was flipping through the complaint, reading the murder, the stalking charges that were levied against him. the hearing was very brief. the judge just going through the process. but the big moment there was his attorney

you heard in kara scannell's piece her reporting on that. what do you think of that? >> i don't think much of it. the bottom line is that at the trial, there will be a voir dire of the jury. all of the jurors will be questioned extensively about any prejudices they have, anything that they know about the case, and each side will have the opportunity to have challenges, to bring challenges up to the judge. this happened in the trump case. it only took two days to pick a jury. i mean, there couldn't have been any more publicity in any other case. >> there was a lot of talk about can he get a fair trial leading up to it? right. >> that's right. that was exactly the talk that was out there. and they were able to pick a jury in a couple of days. so i don't see that being any different here. >> his demeanor yesterday, unemotional, you could see him actually smile at points in the courtroom that is walking. you know, you see kind of a split screen here. we're putting up on the left side is what i would say is the far cry from what we saw in pennsylvania is the left side of y

also, cnn's kara scannell, who is in the courtroom for proceedings today.himon, first, what can you tell us about where what kind of cell mangione is being held in tonight? >> yeah, so it's in brooklyn, as you said, it's called the mdc, the metropolitan detention center. it's the only detention center that's left in this area in new york city. you know, it's housed other very famous prisoners. currently there is sean combs, p diddy. he's there waiting, awaiting trial here in manhattan as well. you know, ghislaine maxwell, she was the woman who was convicted after her relationship with jeffrey epstein. of course, everyone will remember she was housed there while she was on trial. she had complained about the conditions. look, the conditions there have been known by many of the people who criticize that facility. they say that the conditions where there is no water at times. there were issues with heat at one point years ago and also just recently there were indictments against inmates who were trying to kill other inmates and also spot checks now are often h

. >> and cnn's kara scannell was also inside that courtroom and joins us now. so, kara, bring us up to speed in terms of how it all went down and what happened. yeah, the whole arraignment took just about 20 minutes. mangione was led into the courtroom, as you could see there in plain clothes with his ankles and his wrists shackled. there was the, the, the the shackling around his waist as well. he was surrounded during the entire hearing by a wall of corrections. excuse me? by wall of court officers. and during the hearing, mangione spoke just once when he entered his plea of not guilty. but his lawyer did use the moment as an opportunity to raise some of these concerns that she has about there being federal charges, which he was indicted or he was he was charged with last week, and he had his first court appearance in that case on thursday. and then the state charges where he was indicted on 11 felony counts. and today was his arraignment on those counts. so she had raised questions about the politicalization of this as well, pointing to the perp walk where ma

let's go straight to cnn's kara scannell. kara, what more are you learning? >> yeah, jim.the new york attorney general's office has responded to a letter sent by trump's legal team last week. and in this letter today, they're saying that they are not going to drop their judgment. this $454 million civil fraud case that is currently up on appeal. now trump's lawyers had asked them to dismiss it because trump is going into the white house. this has been the tactic that they have used on some of the criminal cases. you know, special counsel jack smith has agreed to dismiss those two indictments. however, in new york, the manhattan district attorney's office is still fighting to uphold the conviction and the hush money case. but in this civil fraud case, trump's team, you know, they lost this judgment. the judge found that trump had fraudulently inflated the value of his properties to obtain better rates on loans and insurance. the judge ordered $454 million for him to pay, which that dollar amount keeps ticking higher with interest. it has been on appeal. they argued it in se

kara scannell reporting for us. kara, thank you very much. our legal and law enforcement experts are standing by. they're joining us right now. john miller, what do you make of mangione attorney saying he hasn't seen any evidence that his client is the shooter and that his client will plead not guilty to the pennsylvania charges? >> i think as my two colleagues both know, he's telling the absolute truth because he showed up basically for a routine court appearance and has not received any of the discovery material, which would include the evidence that they've gathered. so while he's saying he hasn't seen any, he knows better than to suggest there isn't any. he just hasn't seen it. >> laura coates from what we've heard from mangione attorney, what's your sense of how he will defend this case? >> well, certainly you would expect a defense attorney to try to begin their case in the court of public opinion, one in which the court of public opinion has weighed in very strongly on this matter. >> that probably is making prosecutors a little bit wa

cnn's kara scannell is with us now on this. , what did the court say about trump's appeal in this case? >> so, brianna, the federal appeals court said that the trial judge, judge lewis kaplan, who had made decisions about evidence that came into the case. they said that he didn't abuse his discretion when he made those judgment calls about what the jury could hear. trump had challenged this verdict on the grounds that the judge had allowed two women who separately and independently accused trump of sexual assault from testifying. those two women were able to testify in the case. and so trump was challenging that ruling. now, the appeals court saying that they found that the trial judge made no errors. but they said even if he had the strength of carroll's case outweighed any decision that would give trump a new trial. so the appeals court saying that trump does not get a new trial in that one carroll lawsuit. now, carroll's attorney, roberta kaplan, issuing a statement today saying that both jean carroll and i are gratified by t

cnn's kara scannell is joining us now. how did the judge come to this? this, um, decision.ou know, you were there for the trial. you watched all of it. you watched as one person after the other took the stand. how did he get here? >> so he goes through this evidence, the evidence that trump's team is challenging and saying that testimony from white house aides like hope hicks and madeleine westerhout and trump's tweets when he was in the oval office were all official evidence and should never come into the trial. >> based on the supreme court's ruling back in july. and the judge walks through all of this. and ultimately, he concludes that this case was about a private matter. it was about hush money paid to a porn star and the cover up that followed. and he said it is logical and reasonable to conclude that any communications about that were also personal and unofficial. so that's the bottom line here. he goes on to say, the court concludes that if error occurred regarding the introduction of the challenged evidence, such error was harmless in light of the overwhelming evid

cnn's kara scannell joins us now. kara, so what does this mean for the case? this means that jean carroll is one step closer to getting that $5 million that the jury awarded her in both compensatory and other damages. you know, this was a case that went to trial where the jury found that donald trump had sexualand defamed jean carroll for an encounter they had, where she alleges that he essentially raped her in a department store in the mid 1990s, and the jury found that he had sexually abused her. one step short of that. but trump had appealed it, saying that the judge had made some errors in allowing certain evidence in including the testimony of two other women who would allege completely separate encounters with donald trump that he had sexually assaulted them. so this appeals court now has issued a 77 page opinion in which they said that they don't believe the trial judge had abused his discretion by allowing, in the testimony of those two women, among other challenges. and they say that this verdict is upheld, that donald trump's rights were not impugned

cnn's kara scannell joining me now with more. so, kara, what more did we learn? what did we hear at this arraignment earlier today? >> so the arraignment itself was only about 20 minutes. and as you saw, luigi mangione was escorted into the courthouse with plainclothes officers on both sides of him, their arms interlocked with him as he was shackled at his wrists and at his ankles. now, inside the courtroom, there were four rows that were filled for the public. about roughly 30 members of the public, all relatively young, and the majority of them women, which is just interesting. no one said anything, of course, because the court officers keep a pretty strong hold on the decorum in the courtroom, especially in such a serious charge case. outside the courtroom, there were also some protesters with free luigi signs, which is a little unusual. outside of new york. you don't often see that sort of people showing up outside of a courthouse. but, you know, inside, his lawyers are making the point that she was concerned that he would not get a fair trial because of that

let's bring in cnn's kara scannell and former new york state supreme court justice jill konwiser. ra, we're just over a month until trump's inauguration. where does this case go between now and inauguration day, january 20th? and what is the trump team saying? >> well, trump's team, as you just put up his truth social posts. they are criticizing the judge, continuing down that path of calling him biased. and what we do expect is that they will move to appeal this decision. they're allowed to under the law. but this is just one of the many avenues that trump has been trying to get the conviction overturned. and the indictment dismissed. there is still a pending motion before judge merchan, which trump has challenged the case because he is now president elect, saying that this ongoing litigation would interfere and influence his decision making as he's heading into the white house. now, trump's lawyers also raised a new argument that the judge informed the public about yesterday in a letter. trump's team has made vague references to juror misconduct. the judge saying, though, that th

cnn's kara scannell joins us now. so walk us through kara. what else we heard in court today at this arraignment. so very quickly, off the bat, it only lasts about 20 minutes. but mangione was asked to enter a plea. >> that was the only time he spoke. >> and he entered a plea of not guilty to these 11 state charges. >> you know, then his attorney took the opportunity to raise these concerns that she had about him, as she put it, being a human ping pong ball. >> and the issue that there are warring jurisdictions. >> so she raised this saying she was concerned he wouldn't have the right to a fair trial. the judge gregory carro telling her that he could only control what happens in his courtroom, but he assured her that mangione would be able to have a fair trial and that they would have a robust jury selection process to weed out any sort of bias. it was interesting in the courtroom today, there were four rows of public reserved for the public, and they were they were filled. they were mostly women. about two dozen women out of a group of, say,

those pennsylvania charges, then the other one right after on extradition, according to cnn's kara scannell. we do now expect him to waive that extradition and to go voluntarily to new york. that's according to his attorney. and if that's the case, a prison spokesperson, erin, tells us that he could leave pennsylvania right from that courthouse after that proceeding, if that is, in fact, what ultimately happens. so this story, at least the pennsylvania portion of this story, not quite done yet, but again, we're learning more about his life here before he likely ultimately heads back to new york. >> erin. absolutely. all right, danny, thank you very much. and all of that, you know, significant detail there from danny's reporting. joey jackson joins me now. criminal defense attorney. so, joey, okay, i want to get your reaction to some of the details that danny had there. first, though, when he's talking about the charges, first degree murder. you know, to sum just you look at this and you go, a guy comes and assassinates someone on the street on video in the streets of new york. that's first

i mean, this is my colleague kara scannell has also done some reporting on this. to say it doesn't have a great reputation, maybe putting it mildly at this point. there have been a number of issues and concerns about this jail. what is it like inside? >> well, it's so bad. there's an interagency operation taking place right now to investigate all of the problems in new york. and it's understaffed. it can be difficult to get people to work there together with the violence and suicides and what the bureau of prisons not wanting any risk, they're going to confine him 23, 24 hours a day. i can tell you, my partner served 26 years in prison, including eight years in the penitentiary and one full year in the hole. and he said after he got out of the hole, life was measurably easier. so it's difficult. and the hardest part of the experience, going through detention and just serving so much time in segregation. >> there was an ask for him to be separated over concerns about just how high profile this is. there's there's typically a 21 day evaluation, as i understand it. w
