for more on this, we're joined by cnn's kara scannell. kara, what do you know about how those three signatures wound up on that court filing tonight? it was not without drama. >> it wasn't boris. and, i mean, this may have been a case where the person who stepped forward was not the fool or coward, but more of the fall guy. here's what we know. people familiar with meetings that took place today tell us that emil bove, the acting deputy attorney general, had summoned those who were left in the public integrity section. that's after five people resigned last night when they refused to sign this motion to dismiss. so they had this meeting with them. he said he needed one career person to step forward and to sign the document. now, after beauvais left, the team still met and talked together. they considered a range of options, sources tell us, including a mass resignation. but then it was one longtime member of the team, someone close to retirement, ed sullivan, who said that he would step forward and sign the document. now on the document, h

let me get a report from cnn's kara scannell, who was there for today's hearing. kara, what? tell us what came out of the hearing. >> well, jake, the hearing lasted only about 20 minutes. but what we did learn is some of the evidence that prosecutors have and that they've begun to turn over to mangione defense team. that includes police body cam footage, surveillance photos and videos. also, dna evidence records from a cell phone that they found at the crime scene. the hilton hotel, where brian thompson, the ceo of united health care, was gunned down, and also some body cam video that they got from luigi mangione arrest in pennsylvania at that mcdonald's. now, that's where his lawyer has already signaled what some of their fight might be. she said that she believes that the search and seizure of mangione in pennsylvania was unconstitutional, and some of that evidence should not come in. his lawyer, karen friedman agnifilo, also said that she's been spending a lot of time right now dealing with federal prosecutors who brought similar charges against mangione, accusing him of m

cnn's kara scannell joins us now in new york. the top federal prosecutor in manhattan and five other senior prosecutors in d.c. have all resigned because of this. what is the response been like to this wave of resignations really shaking up doj? >> i think the question. >> pam. >> is, are. >> the resignations over or will there be more to come because the acting u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york, danielle sassoon, resigned after she said she couldn't follow through with the directives set by the acting deputy attorney general, who ordered her to dismiss the corruption case against adams, not based on the merits of the case, but because they said it related to the politicalization of the prosecution. and also they said it was distracting adams from carrying out president donald trump's agenda in new york on immigration enforcement. so sassoon resigned and in a very pointed eight page letter, she said it amounted to a quid pro quo. now, both the justice department and adams team have denied that there is a quid pro

kara scannell, really appreciate it. i want to bring in legal analyst and trial attorney mercedes colwin. now, you heard some of what kara was talking about as far as what we saw in court. i wonder what your reaction is to to some of the fanfare we've seen in and around the court and what you make of how the proceedings were handled today. >> that's a great question, omar, because it's exactly what the prosecutors should. >> focus on. these are your prospective jurors. there's an overwhelming support for luigi mangione, and they could conceivably be stelters in during the prosecution as this case proceeds along to trial. if i were the prosecutor, it would certainly start to really concern me that there is such support for him. when have we seen this. >> type of. >> support where even websites where there's cash flowing into the website. so he now. has half $1 million in that he's been able to aggregate. in a gofundme page on the website. so all of this is particularly troubling for the prosecution in terms of the case and

i want to go straight to kara scannell, who is in that courtroom today. kara, you were on the 15th floor with mangione today. what more can you tell us about what happened inside of court? >> well, brianna, as you said, he walked in, flanked by security, wearing a bulletproof vest and and his ankles and wrists both shackled. now, inside, the prosecutor's focused on the evidence that they've recovered and have begun turning over to mangione defense team, including police body cam footage, some of surveillance videos also say dna evidence and records from a cell phone that they recovered at the crime scene. the new york hilton hotel, where the united health care ceo was gunned down. and they also said they were turning over some of the materials that they received from the pennsylvania police, who searched mangione. when he was arrested at that mcdonald's. and that is where his lawyer started to carve out what some of her legal strategy here might be. she was saying that she thinks that mangione was illegally searched, and that this evidence should not come

let's go right to cnn's kara scannell. kara, what do we know? brianna. >> so the acting u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york. >> danielle sassoon, submitted her resignation in a letter to the attorney general. this, as she has been under pressure to drop the corruption case against new york city mayor eric adams. this letter was sent this afternoon to the attorney general's office, and it had been a looming question since. it was only earlier this week that the acting deputy attorney general had instructed sassoon to drop the case against eric adams. and in that highly unusual directive, the main justice prosecutors had said that they were not they were not making this directive based on the evidence in the case or the strength of the case, but because they wanted the mayor to be free and unencumbered, to help make some of the policies that president donald trump has been pushing, including on immigration. so that put the prosecutor here in this office, s.d.n.y. it's known for its independence. it has a long history of independence and at times clashes with mai

legal analyst elie honig, who served as a federal prosecutor with the southern district, and cnn's kara scannell and former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. kara, let's talk a little bit more about what danielle sassoon said in her letter to emil bove. >> well, i mean, as you lay it out, she's very transparent about what happened in those meetings. so she's making the public record here about what transpired and sort of the pressure that she was under and just what beauvais was doing without even her input. >> it's a very detailed like, i think six pages or eight pages. >> eight page letter, very single spaced, a lot of detailed information in there. but she writes in there. it is a breathtaking and dangerous precedent to reward adam's opportunistic and shifting commitments on immigration and other policy matters with dismissal of a criminal indictment. she actually says that this amplifies the argument of the weaponization of the justice department by playing favors for people that they like, who are in line with their politics. >> she's essentially suggesting that it's the trump department o

cnn's kara scannell is in new york. she's got details for us. kara, what do we know about these officials and their resignations? >> well, wolf, this is becoming a growing crisis at the justice department. the u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york, dael sassoonwho is serving in an acting capacity, informed the department of justice that she would be resigning today. that is because she will not follow through with the directive from acting deputy attorney general emil bove to dismiss those charges against eric adams. this followed this meeting that took place between the prosecutors from the southern district and bovy and adams attorneys. and what sassoon writes in her letter to the department of justice, the attorney general resigning, she says that adams attorneys repeatedly urged what amounted to a quid pro quo, indicating that adams would be in a position to assist with department enforcement priorities only if the indictment were dismissed. that is, she is arguing that this was not about the merits of the case and something tha

cnn's kara scannell joins us now live. kara, what are you hearing about this resignation? >> yeah, boris, as you say, this is the seventh prosecutor to resign this prosecutor. his name is hagen scott, and he was one of the line assistants working on this case. and he submitted a letter of resignation to the justice department today, in which he points out that he agrees with the decision not to bring the case, and also says that what they were suggesting that they wanted the prosecutors to do was to essentially dangle a carrot over new york mayor eric adams to get him to get him to do what the administration wanted. and then in exchange, potentially, if he didn't have the stick of potentially indicting him down the road. so in this letter, which you say, which is scathing, hagen writes, any assistant u.s. attorney would know that our laws and traditions do not allow using the prosecutorial power to influence other citizens, much less elected officials, in this way, if no lawyer within earshot of the president is willing to give him that advice, then i expect he will eventu

cnn's kara scannell has more on this. and, kara, tell us who is now resigning and how big a deal this is. do you think there are going to be more resignations? >> well, jake, we're already starting to see the serious fallout from that directive. the u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york, danielle sassoon, issued her letter of resignation today around 2 p.m. after saying that she would was unable to fulfill her duties. this is all as they've been under intense pressure to dismiss the case against eric adams. then, when emil bove then tried to get the main justice, the prosecutors in washington, d.c. public integrity section to take up the case, there were two senior prosecutors in those units who resigned as well. and we're also learning from a memorandum that we just obtained that beauvais has informed sassun that the line prosecutors were working on the adams case would be placed on administrative leave and investigated by the justice department's office of professional responsibility, and will remain on thi
