that karen got the treatment that she did. despite all they've been through, ken and karen have found that humor is a great help in recovery. karen was calling formula "fodor" or "fodder." you know, she couldn't think of the word for baby formula. some funny things come out, and that's helpful for everybody to sort of take away some stress. i can't get the words out. i an, i know the word that i want, but it won't come out of my mouth. i mean, she really has to work at it. it's like learning a foreign language. the main thing that i have to do is not... try to remember not to finish her sentences, but to let... to let her, you know, struggle through that. "struggle" and "perseverance." both words characterize the path to recovery for a victim of stroke. so do the words "resourceful" and "adaptable," in referring to the brain itself. we've learned a little bit from neuscience about how the central nervous system works and how it might respond to inputs-- how it learns, how it adapts-- and we can even image some of that adaptati

karen, your view of that? >> that's exactly right. and i predict that if president obama is re-elected on wednesday, we are going to see a freakout by the right wing as they realize there simply aren't enough white people in this country to win a presidential election as we've been telling them for a long time now. yeah. lindsey graham actually gets this. the message that the republican party should be taking from this is not to how do we move farther to the right but how do you come up with a conservative agenda that actually is inclusive of more of the american people. consistently, i mean, that's a lot of the dog whistle politics we've heard in the last couple days. trying to appeal to a shrinking base. it doesn't work in a country like the united states anymore. >> whatever happens tomorrow, smart republicans realize this. they realize this year they have essentially tried to capture a bigger part of a shrinking electorate. a shrinking white male electorate. and they hope to win that way. they realize they can't possibly win natio

karen is right here. look at the mathematics of the demographics of this country, the republican party can't consist of the sort of social policies that they have been pushing, of the ways in which they kind of ail yebt the very demographics that are emerging but it's going to take allotted more than lip service from people like governor jindal to make the kind of changes we're talking about. they have to try to become younger, more diverse, less about religion and more about women's rights. it's a very, very complicated transformation they have to undergo. the democratic party has to do some of that work as well. the democrats also have to look at the progressive caucus within their own sort of constituency and make sure they're honoring the coalition that put president obama back in office. >> and, you know, that's a really important point because we will not have barack obama on the ticket in four years, and so whoever is our democratic nominee has to understand you're going to have to work for the bla

and karen finney and e.j. dionne talk about the rightys who blame hurricane sandy for the rough finish. >> the hurricane is what has broke romney's momentum. >> good to have you with us, folks. the days are racing by and time is running out for the 2012 presidential campaign. mitt romney needs something short of a miracle in the worst way. the campaign continues to trail but romney went to cleveland today to project strength. >> the chose of the american people can lead to one of two very different destinations. if the president were to be re-elected, he would -- it's possible but not likely. >> romney's running mate paul ryan is trying to complete a hail mary pass in wisconsin. it was off to ohio as well. >> two more days. just two more days. two more days. this is one of those elections we will think back and look at for years. a critical influkz point. >> president obama is on top by just half a point. romney isn't as close in the states where the election is going to be decided. in paul ryan's home state o

. >> karen? >> i've got to take the other side of that. i think the bank stocks actually will do well in either event. i think that for a bank of america, for example, it's the housing recovery. >> sure. >> that will be the most important factor there. so i would be long, a and i am long bank of america for either outcome. >> that was also the case with wells fargo. i mean this is one of the names, this is a big romney name, right? we saw what happened to that since they reported their 2 edq. it's predicated on whether we are recovering as an economy. a the end of the day short-term volatility around some of these things. and there is plenty of tradeable opportunities. >> scott nations, what is your election play? >> i think caterpillar, at least if mr. obama is elected. he wants to spend money on the infrastructure, and caterpillar has actually done pretty well over the past month, given that the market, the broader market has not done particularly well, and that b-to-b, at least as far as asia is concerned isn't doing particularly well.

listen to this, karen. >> i don't think that's what he was saying. i think he was saying that there's an effort that the incumbent used, as many other incumbents have used, to reach out to constituents. that's something that we've seen in politics going back to a long time. they did it effectively and they have certain groups that they wanted to do well with and they did well. >> that's utterly nonsense. that's intelligence of the public. he was not talking about the traditional way. he was saying, as they said throughout the campaign, he was giving things away, handouts, which was an insult to the president and to those constituent groups and the fact is that people voted based on the president's record and his ideas and he got a larger margin. in fact, he will probably go to 51% of the electorate. >> i actually wrote about this for msnbc.com last week. this is part of the delusion of the republican party. this is why they have more than just a single cycle problem. i think they have a much longer term problem in that they refuse to accept america a

karen, what about this? why is she a target? >> i worked with dr.inistration. she is a brilliant woman and a gifted diplomat. so take that off the table. here's the thing. even if the republicans are too stupid to understand that after having just lost an election largely because of -- they lost the woman vote, they lost the young vote, they lost the african-american vote, that taking on a woman of this level of credentials in a hearing with mostly white men, a relatively young african-american woman, it's just a bad idea. and particularly given that she is very well qualified and given that these are also people who tried to say as dr. dyson said, palin and harriet meyers were qualified. here's what's so infuriating on this. these guys all have the exact same intelligence. they knew that there was a cia operation operating out of that facility and that potentially that's part of why there were certain things that had to remain classified. they knew it. so this whole game is all the more politicized. it makes it seem like they just don't want this d
