joining me now, msnbc's karen finney, host of disrupt with karen finney. analyst lisa bloom. karen finney, the statement today from this juror who -- when she first appeared on television, was completely convinced of every single element of the case as presented by the defense. is this statement of full of sympathy suddenly for trayvon martin. what's your reaction to that? >> you know, the first interview, i have to tell you, i found chilling, it confirmed for me something when mark o'mara gave his closing argument. >>> no other family should be forced to endure what the martin which was when he talked about crime in the neighborhood that had been done by people who looked like trayvon martin. i don't know the exact words used. but i think he was trying to give the jury permission for whatever biases they had, and even though we couldn't say racial profiling, for profiling. and her answers in the first interview sounded like she bought that hook, line and sinker, now she seems to have taken a step back and thought about it perhaps differently than they wer

joining me now is karen finney and joy reid. thank you both for coming on the show tonight. >> great to be here. >> what are the implications of rush calling the shots for the gop? i mean, you just heard moochelle, the president's a thug. i mean, what are the implications of that guy's influence on the republican party? >> the implications, we've seen it. the merger of the entertainment complex on the right with the republican party which started in '04 but really solidified with the 2008 campaign. the results of it were they lost. then they doubled down on it in 2012. to the point where elected republicans are afraid to even oppose this guy. they're afraid to even denounce the most extreme things he said. he is now as you said their boss. and the merger of the two together has resulted in defeat and it will keep resulting in defeat. >> we're not talking about some long time ago stuff that he said 15, 20 years ago and regret. this is recent stuff. >> like yesterday. >> this is like yesterday stuff. >> remember when he called san

. >>> for more on this i'd like to bring in karen finney. >> great to be with you. >> i want to start with demographic statistics in speaking to you. in 1950, 82% of the city of detroit was white. today, 82% is black. a lot of folks are concerned about the role of the state in this city that largely democratic and largely minority. why is that? >> well, look. i think the question is what actions what further action will the states take or the state take with regard to the city? i mean, clearly they are going to have to put together a plan. i think there is still a question about what is going to happen with those pensions and they are going to have to have a plan to bring the city back, but not just the infrastructure but also the spirit of the city. this is very demoralizing for people. i was reading a bunch of stories last night. people are really scared what is going to happen not just to their pensions but this is the city where they live so a lot of questions about what happens going forward. in the press conference this morning certainly helped but i think they will continue to

joining us now are msnbc's melissa harris-perry and karen finney. welcome to you both. out with you. in terms of who the president was speaking to, obviously it was the country, but in terms of -- obviously you've worked in politics. you've worked with the nitty-gritty. how do his words go into action now? how are they taken forward and put into action to make this become a more perfect union? is there a political way to do that? >> i don't know so much of a political way. the president also talked about, i mean, he has some opportunity as a convener. the opportunity to bring people together to try to talk about ideas in a way that is not so politicized, that is not so kind of showy for the cameras. i think that's what they're going to work on, is how can convene groups of people to come up with ideas? i just want to say, you know, those remarks took me back to grant park where white, black, brown, you name it, old, young, you know, we were one country. the president's remarks talking about an american experience in a way that validated, i think for a lot of us, what our

>> for more now i'm joined by karen finney, host of disrupt with concern finney" and clarence page fromis new "wall street journal" poll finds that just 19% of african-americans and 46% of democrats feel americans are judged by the content of their character rather than by their skin color. by comparison, 59% of whites and 65% of republicans believe this to be the case. is it not the first step in dealing with this issue to eliminate this particular discrepancy if so many in the country refuse to face the realities of race, can anything really be done to fix the problem? >> well, i think that we have to look at those numbers and look at the attitudes behind them. i'm saddened first of all, martin, because this is such a replay of the kind of discussions we had after the rodney king beating, after the o.j. simpson trial. you begin to wonder i think on a day to day basis, black folk, white folks as individuals get along remarkably well, certainly better than when i was a kid in the '50s and '60s. but as far as our macro attitudes go about how we feel about each other's groups, i wonder if
