karen hughes did much better. she went around, and she made a point of listening. but there was no connection between the listening and policy. and it's hard to make that connection. jim glassman worked very hard to try to bring us into the internet age and all the tools of social media which is where it needs to be because it needs to be a two-way conversation. it's not just telling people. and we're going to see how well they do. the biggest problem is that even though the obama administration and hillary clinton came into office with strong support for public diplomacy as to whether we should be doing it, the budget was frozen and will probably be substantially reduced in the 20% reduction of state department budget's now about to get. so there'll be no money for it. now, on the other hand -- oh, and incidentally, other countries always do it, think of the france alliance, the centers from germany, think of the japan foundation, think of the new confucius centers that china's putting all over the world, thousands of them.

one of my favorite stories, karen hughes tells this. walking down the beach seeing one of those planes. the slogan said jill, come back, i am miserable without you, jack. that slogan, jack, too much about you. not enough about her. >> jill, i love you, you're amazing, jack. >> but it's going to be raised any way. i agree with david in theory, but in practice, barack obama is clearly going to raise this one where another since romney seems so uncomfortable in talking about his own wealth, right? so, he has to have a plan ready and say okay, let's make the case for reform. i didn't break any laws. you want to change them, let's just make it flatter. >> and by the way, that would mean people like me are going to pay more money and i'm for that, but i don't want to raise overall tax rates. he could thread that theed l. >> mitt romney could get out of this in some respects by proposing tax reform, a system that's more fair. anything he were to do that's like that, runs right up against the orthodoxy that's currently strong in the republican

one of my favorite political stories is told by karen hughes. she describes walking along the beach and seeing one of those advertising fliers thabs jill come back, i am miserable without you, jack. too much about you, not enough about her. republicans in these primaries are talking to themselves. they're denying realities of climate. they are focused on social issues. and the problem is that mitt romney's going to come out of these caucuses in danger of wearing the things that he was there. as you put out a second ago, does mitt romney want to be running as guy posed to raising the debt ceiling? >> to be honest, when you look at this issue objectively, it's a ridiculous thing for him to say. so, yeah. interesting point. >> but this is what happens when you pander in the primaries. the long contest the democrats had in 2008 was about who could appeal to voters in the center of the spectrum. and minnesota, republican parties fault lines are between tim pawlenty and michele bachmann. so, this is really going to be an interesting fight. the caucus
