the co-owner karen johnson says it's not just an historic bookstore. >> you can be yourself. can share your heart. you can say i'm hurting and someone will help you with t there's always somebody in here with what somebody else needs. >> reporter: in the '40s and the '50s, it was a jazz club. in the '60s, they started selling civil rights cultural history books. and today videos play on a screen honoring those who fought those early conflicts. >> know, there's a lot of struggles here in san francisco and marcus books would provide a beacon of hope and inspiration. >> reporter: the johnson family, too, is hopeful they will come up with the money before the deadline, which happens to be february 28th, the last day of black history month. this weekend, this old school bookstore will be using the new school form of fundraising. at the african-american arts and cultural complex they will be gathering folks with laptops and smartphones to help make donations to the cause. in san francisco, don ford, kpix 5. >> over the years, marcus books has hosted various black celebrities for va
