dame karen pierce. it's so good to have you here at such a key moment. and i wonder as king charles iii, we start to see him in this role on the throne, what will change about the contours of the kingdom? i ask that because, as i'm sure you've seen, there's been a lot written in recent days. in the "new york times" there was a columnist, who is a british historian, writes about the empire. she said that the commonwealth really kind of glosses over some of the more bloody forms of british colonialism. she said in her role as queen, elizabeth helped obscure a bloody history of decolonization whose proportions and legacies have yet to be acknowledged. it kicked off a debate here. i wonder how you think king charles will deal with that. is he mindful of things like this? >> he's very politically aware and astute and very much aware of the world around him. i think his first task will be to go around the constituent parts of the uk, promoting a message of unity, one of respect for the late queen, but also one of renewal. he'll want to show stability and unity

so the british ambassador to the u.s., karen pierce. thank you for joining us.. >> thanks very much for having me. >> i just say i'm sorry for your loss. the uk is dealing with high inflation, out of control gas prices. there is the war in ukraine, a lot to cover between president biden and the prime minister's trust. what do you think is first on their agenda? >> i think they are going to spend time talking about pushing back on authoritarianism. it is behind what is going on with ukraine and the treatment of taiwan. and the president and prime minister both share the belief in the power of freedom, the power of liberty, what we can do to embed open societies and bring better benefits to cities. that will be a very important thing. and it's one piece of philosophy, if you like, that they both have in common. i think energy is bound to be top of the list. that's a very live issue, as you were saying. we have brought in matters to help households. the president has recently passed the reduction act. there is a lot more to talk there and what to get-together. secu

. >> british ambassador dame karen pierce will join me right here on "the lead" live in our next hour. we're also learning heads of state from around the world, including president biden, are attending the funeral when it's scheduled. what do we know about whether president biden will travel to the uk for the travel. >> president biden does plan to go to the funeral. key details still remain to be seen, but president biden did confirm to reporters today as he was on his way to ohio that he is going to go to the queen's funeral. he said he has not spoken yet with king charles, as he is now known, but he does know him, jake, so that's another conversation we wait to see is well given we know he did speak with the new british prime minister liz truss earl aryesterday morning as the reports about the queen's health were coming in. when the president goes, he will likely be part of an official delegation. this is something they're closely organizing here at the white house to follow protocol for that, but it remains to be seen who goes with president biden. one thing to watch is whether or

. >>> joining us now the british ambassador to the united states karen pierce.ke to start by asking about the queen's legacy in terms of how it impacted the special relationship. >> the queen was a great admirer and friend of america. she often spoke about the common heritage, a kinship, but she'd always go on to speak about the values that we both share, about freedom, and about democracy and about the way we have chosen. the queen never wanted lectures to the country, but she did want to draw attention about freedom-loving and common-law heritage that both britain and america had chosen, and she would often use the word chosen. she met 13 of the last u.s. presidents. she met everyone except lyndon johnson. she paid visits to the u.s. she's been here six times. she was a great admirer of the kentucky racing stables, but she also saw britain as a stalwart friend and ally to the united states. she visited mount vernon. she visited a large number of places in the u.s. and we have been overwhelmed by incredibly kind messages right across america on her death. >> am
