let's start our coverage with karen travers in baltimore for us now. o you. >> reporter: good morning, tj andreen na. right now downtown is a ghost town. the curfew has been in effect for a couple hours. it took awhile to get everybody off the streets but the police commissioner last night said it's work. ten people have been raestsed. a very heavy police presence throughout the city as officials try and keep calm and avoid the violence we saw last night. darkness fell over baltimore and a curfew went into effect from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. nobody allowed out on the streets. but not everybody listened. >> clear the area. >> reporter: police went around with bullhorns and broadcast messages from helicopters urging people to go home. there were some minor skirmishes protests are throwing bottles at police who responded with smoke and flash bangs but after that the crowds thinned out. across west baltimore, they picked up pieces. >> yesterday broke my heart. today i feel proud. >> reporter: residents coming together to clean up the broken glass and debris

karen travers is there for us. she's at baltimore city hall right now. ello to you, and you know, we did. we saw the best of baltimore in a lot of ways this past evening. and so it seems like in a lot of ways the curfew worked that authorities put in place but also the community came together to make sure that curfew was enforced, as well. >> reporter: that's exactly what the police commissioner said last night. he said the curfew was working. it took time to get everybody off the streets and ten people were arrested but it was working. he credited the community for that. he said there were people in some of those neighborhoods in west baltimore who came out of their houses and were telling the young people, the people gathered in some of those intersections get off the street, get back in your houses. nobody in those areas wanted to see the violence and chaos that happened overnight last night. >> karen, i know. i have family members who have had doctors appointments canceled in the area today. the unrest clearly impacting a lot of things including games

. >> abc's karen travers live for us in baltimore. been keeping an eye on things this morning. to you once again. freddie gray's family came out late last night after we had seen so much of this violence. what was their message? >> reporter: very surprised press conference late last night, and their message was a plea for calm. they said we know people are upset. we know people want justice for freddie but this is not the way to do it. his father noted just hours before they had a beautiful ceremony and buried their son and how quickly things turned violent. they said, this is not the answer and this has to stop. >> how did this happen? walk us through this. how did the violence get so out of hand? >> reporter: they think it was starting on social media. we were up at the mall yesterday at about 1:30 getting lunch for our crew and a lot of police officers, police vehicles, very heavy police presence. within an hour, school let out at a high school around the corner. teenagers started streaming into the area and by 3:00, 3:30, things turned ugly. people say there was a big social

abc's karen travers joins us live from baltimore karen. >> reporter: goodgood afternoon sarah, an emotion at scene in baltimore. different from what turned violent downtown baltimore saturday night. some of the mourners say they didn't know freddie gray but they wanted to be here to show support for the grieving family and show their outrage at his death. mourners packed this west baltimore church to pay their respects to the family. it's been a week since gray died from injuries sustained while in custody at the baltimore police. today his family overcome with greefer trying to put aside their -- grief trying to put aside their confess with how the 25-year-old died. >> they want answers but right now their primary concern is burying freddie gray. >> reporter: it's a far cry from saturday's admonishings that turned violent -- demonstrations that turned violent. violence skate -- escalated. the mayor blamed it on out of towners. >> many not from the community in essence were trying to high jack the raw emotions of those who live in baltimore and were expressing anger over the death of mr.
