my name is karen wells, and one of my most treasured roles is that as a mother of two children, so i certainly take their well being very seriously, but i am also vice president of nutrition and many strategy, and i am here on behalf of mcdonald's in opposition to the proposed ordinance and respectfully ask you not recommend its passage because it undermines parental authority as well as responsibility and will not contribute to the improvement of children's health, new edition, and well being. i commend you on some of the amendments you have made, different than what we look earlier, but deny a child a toy is not the solution to the very important subject of children's well-being and child would obesity. we have not found support or science or nutrition guidance or consumer behavior that would support that, and a fair and objective review of our menu shows that mcdonald's is committed to children's well- being and working to be part of the solution. many of the things we heard the parents say today about offering food like we do with our apple's efforts like we do with our caramel d

karen wells is vice president of nutrition and menu strategy for mcdonald's u.s.a.orning to you, karen. >> good morning. >> i know you have a lot to say about this subject. but number one, most important thing is that you believe that if a city can tell people, mcdonald's that you can't put toys in kids happy meals, what could possibly be next? right? >> you know, we strongly believe that the ordinance in san francisco is well intended. this issue of childhood obesity and children's well being is certainly one here in the united states and at mcdonald's, we remain committed to be part of the solution. however, the legislation in san francisco is misguided in its approach. one, the choice for what children eat is the sole responsibility of parents. i'm a parent of two school aged children and it remains my responsibility to decide what our children will eat and secondly, we are not clear on the foundation by which they're making their legislation including both a fruit and vegetable at one meal. there's no evidence that supports that's how children eat. >> sure. and

karen, i'm having a hard time getting a handle on how well run these campaigns are.hey have vote counters at the polls. they get a sense before any of us get a sense on how the results are coming in. do you get any ideas that they're counting the numbers there? do they have any idea what's going on. >> reporter: let me just say that the folks here are kind of hopeful and optimistic. a short time ago, there was a big scream, and people were shouting that they had won ward 8. well, i asked people where they got that from, and nobody seemed to know. about an hour before that, a campaign worker got on the pa system and he said he had the word from a fenty person on the ground at precinct 17 and ward 2 that had fenty ahead of vincent gray by 69% of the vote, and they threw out a number, 731 to 334. none of this is official. the people are nervous. they want to feel that their candidate is winning, and so we're starting to hear that kind of thing. i've covered a lot of these elections, and i have never on a primary night or a general election night been this late into an e

karen coast, an english professor at illinois state university. is there the fear that this could be harming teenage brains in some way? >> well, actually, no.is showing that reading, especially reading longer books, is actually beneficial, because at this point in the gene brain development, it enables them to focus more on sustained arguments and following longer narratives and really focusing on the consequences to -- consequences to actions so they can play emotionally with intense experiences without having to actually have those experiences. it's actually kind of -- >> jon: because one of the criticisms of what intertains teens and preteens these days is video games, text messaging, things that require very short attention spans. >> right. and they have the effect on the brain, what research is showing is what we already suspected, is that they have the effect on the brain to actually inhibit sustained attention. so if kids are spending a lot of time texting and multi tasking, and grownups, too, you're affecting your brain, but it's more intense with kids because they haven't developed the patterns that they need to build conceptual mo
