>> thank you, kari. well, very dangerous conditions for drivers here in the bay area, especially in sonoma county. that's what some people had to be saved from their cars after they were caught in flood waters. less's go to nbc bay area bob redell south of sonoma. bob, you watched one of those rescues go down right in front of you. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris there. were three drivers who had to be rescued overnight and a fourth driver this morning. it should be noted we're here in shellville in sonoma county. there are road closed signs barring entry here at highway 121 and route 12 because of the flooding caused by the sonoma creek. that driver drove past those be barricades and inexplicably tried to drive through this. it is hard to comprehend what was going through his mind as he attempted to drive his mercedes sedan through two to 3 feet of water rushing down highway 121. two other vehicles nearby indicated it wouldn't end well. this driver tried to back up once he realized his predicamen

kari has a look at the radar. the first of four storms headed our way. >> this is a quick one and done. as you get up, getting the kids ready, make sure they have the rain gear. we will see the system quickly moving out of the bay area for the time being. we are tracking lingering light showers through the north bay and moving out of san francisco right now. but the pluck of the heavy rain has shifted off to the south and east. as we zoom in on the north bay, san rafael seeing lingering light showers moving in. and also the bay bridge, heading over towards oakland light rain. just a few minutes ago it was coming down really hard. livermore and pleasanton still seeing light rain. in oakland, you will get clearing here. it has really been pouring there. early this morning we are still seeing spotty showers continuing for the south bay. a little bit heavier as you head through morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. santa cruz mountains, we have been watching this very closely. a lot of rain still pouring there where we

kari, back to you. >> thank you. as you mention, we are going to be looking farther down the line to what's ahead as we head toward the weekend. as of now we are going to see some of those water levels receding as we are getting a break from the rain. some dry weather, a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the lower 50ss. we'll see those temperatures holding steady and much cooler than average for this time of year as we've seen behind the storm system. it's 55 degrees in the south bay and 54 degrees in the tri-valley with a high today of 53 degrees in san francisco. here is a look at storm ranger. we were just talking about that. we see it scanning around the bay area, and no rain as of now. so, that's definitely good news. but as we continue throughout the next several days we'll be putting this back in action and most likely going to be tracking this storm as we go into the weekend. this one will arrive on saturday. and here's a look at the time line because we will have a couple of days of dry weather once

look at why. >>> kari hall is tracking the timeline and the rain. kari? >> we come up on 6:08. we are starting to see the radar filling in. this is a look at the timeline of what to expect as we go through the day. at 7:00, a lot of yellows and reds in the north bay. that's where it will be getting really intense with gusty winds and heavy rain. it will be raining heavily in san francisco over towards oakland. but then the brunt of the storm moving farther south through the peninsula and the east by 9:00. south bay will see that rain between 10 and 11:00 and gettingier as we go through the day. by 2:00, it's still raining. it will be getting lighter in the north bay. that's where we will start to catch a little bit of a break. but the south bay will be in with the brunt of the storm through the evening commute and still raining later tonight before it all wraps up. we will talk about what's happening in the sierra with the squall valley and alpine meadows report. heading over to mike now, it is impacting roads already. >> the road weather index shows more wet roadways. highway

kari, thank you very much. a developing story in anaheim in southern california, an off-duty l.a.p.d. officer is in investigation for pull a gun on teenagers and firing a shot. cell phones captured the entire ordeal. you can see the police officer scuffling with a 13-year-old boy. he's holding had i arm right there. this is near the police officer's home yesterday. it ended with the officer pulling his gun out and firing. you hear the shot. nbc news does not know what occurred prior to the start of the recording, but in a statement police say the officer had, quote, ongoing issues with teenagers walking across his property apparently to get to a nearby school. that teenager who you see in the video said the officer called another female teenager a vulgar name. the boy who we are not identifying since he was simply defending the girl when things got out of hand. >> i thought i was going to die like right there. i thought he was going to shoot me because he was like mad. >> while that video went viral online, it

thank you very much, kari.ell, right now highway 84, niles canyon, is open after lanes in both direction were shut down for 12 hours yesterday. flood waters from alameda creek and debris were to blame. cal trans workers say they need a break from all this rain. >> pretty bad. i've never seen the water come up that far. we got it done. >> they did get it done. this is what highway 84 looked like when it was all said and done. the flooding came from a combination of flooding drains and the creek. the highway didn't open up till 8:00 last night. >> the kreelk between menlo park and palo alto is also teaming. menlo park mayor posted this video on twitter and the creek reached flood stage. yes, flood stage yesterday. this picture warned people. thankfully the creek is receding right now. this is all the debris pulled out of the creek and the scene is playing out all across the bay area again today. >> all right. this might be up for debate now, kris. despite all of the rain we've seen and the fact that much of north

i'm sam brock alongside kari hall and mike inouye. as we see, there are major problems in terms of folks and their commute. and their public safety as well. let's talk about these closures. >> a live look as you showed a couple of seconds ago. this is 101. first you notice the roadway completely empty. that has happened at any bay area freeway at any time. this coming up towards 680 and 280. usually this is the spot where we talk you about the first burst of traffic to san hoe is say. do not worry. this is not a fire. this is industrial. this is exhaust coming off. this is the 280/680 coming off the golf course. this stretch of closure here until it reopens your alternate is 280 and 87. they will take you past all the closures. 87 typically is crowded during the morning commute. this is going to ripple down the south bay until this reopens. in addition to this full closure of highway 101, which is very, very unusual for any of that to have any problems, we are looking at farther south through morgan hill. yesterday we covered this as

thank you very much, kari. look at this rushing water. this is a controlled release happening at the anderson reservoir which is by the way nearly full. and that's i huge problem, especially if an earthquake were to strike. santa clara water valley officials are trying to counter that by dumping water out into coyote creek, but not as much as they would like. again, it's a controlled release taking place because there is sum pli too much water right now in that reservoir. rules created in 2009 set a cap of 68% and right now the reservoir is over 80. it what built in 1950 and it has seismic vulnerabilities. officials say if an earthquake of a 7.25 magnitude or higher were to strike the area, the dam would be damaged and the water unleashed into morgan hill. we'll take you for a ground level look at what is happening in ten minutes. >> we have had so much rain we're now seeing flooding in places that aren't our usual hot spots. i was at this spot earlier this morning. this is in san jose. it breached its banks around midnight and flooded ne
