kari, talk about the winds. kari hall joins us right now. you've been monitoring the winds. that makes it just an additional tough firefight. >>> it's not a steady wind. we've seen it as high as 76 miles per hour in middletown to the north of where the kinkade fire is. and so we are going to see at times those erratic winds causing the fire direction to shift and we've seen a more brisk northeasterly wind blowing the fire to the southwest. we're watching that. gusts up to 54. for the east bay breezy conditions but mostly at our higher elevations. the reason we had the elevations above 1,000 feet. it's been very warm. the firefight letters have to fight this blaze in 90 degree temperatures. those gusts kicking up at times heading closer to geyserville. this is one of the weather cameras on geyser peak. we've seen fire crews battling the blaze from that direction as well. we'll have more updates on this all throughout the morning and will continue our coverage live online at nbcbayarea.com. mike, you're tracking it from the roads. >>> that's right, kari, tracking allf the traf

kari, how is it looking? >> the good news it the north bay will see the drift the smoke getting heavier in the morning. through the coast smoke this afternoon and this evening for the south bay. it will make it unhealthy for the air quality. we see our temperatures in the north bay now at 51 degrees. it's 54 in livermore, san jose is 58. look how much cooler it is now than yesterday at this time. in santa rosa 26 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. that's also a sign that the winds have calmed doubt. we had the gusty winds that were warming up the temperatures. we are going to see our winds coming in from the northwests we're going to see the wind direction. the stream lines are seeing that will carry the smoke into the rest of the bay area. we'll talk more about the weekend. mike, we for the fires. >> 128 from geyserville down to pine flats road. that remains in place uppy because of the kinkade fire. there was never an effect from the spring fire that popped unfortunate yesterday morning. and the muir fire, i

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that for us. and kari, it will taper off a bit today. >> it will taper off today and we're still seeing high wind gusts in the areas to the north and the hills. but look at the smoke plume that was blowing directly off toward the southwest from the kincade fire. and so most of us across the bay area haven't had a lot of that smoke today. a closer look and reduced visibility due to the smoke coming in near healdsburg because the visibility was that far and they didn't want people driving in low visibility and the unhealthy air quality. today we'll start to see moek moving into the rest of the bay area due to a shift in the wind. it starts this afternoon into the evening hours. eventually into the south bay tonight. i'll be tracking that and we'll talk about the winds coming up in a couple of minutes. but mike will take to the bay area. >> that is right. we started here because this is a half way poiblts where the fire is active and where it has less of an impact. we're over here and we see a lighte

we'll move quickly, kari. overall a lighter volume of traffic but these things are pronounced, westbound 92, there it is still we have over there on the right side which isn't a lot of area its disabled vehicle being addressed, slow across the glass section for highway 92, the san mateo bridge. that was your alternate taking you away from this jam north of the dumbarton bridge. this should start recovering as you see north 101 at woodside. that's the traffic alert but only one lane is blocked by a crash just north of marsh headed up toward woodside. farther north we have recovery as six, possibly eight vehicles were involved in this crash at peninsula, on the shoulder, that is not a traffic alert. the rest of the bay moves smoothly until you so they upper east shore freeway, also very slow out of el sobrante, toward central avenue before the racetrack and the merge coming to richmond from the north bay. other than that, things are moving smoothly through contra costa, mild slowing for highway 4. no problems fo

thank you. >> we want to turn it over now to meteorologist kari hall. as you just heard meteorologist craig clements talking about seeing 30 fires in california. >> that information that they're gathering is really critical for future research for us to know more about how these in certain conditions. that's serious work and we thank him for that. as we look at our current conditions, as we talked about, it's very cold because a cold front swept through and that's what's also driving these high winds. now the current temperature is at 46 degrees, and we're also seeing very low humidity, down to 16%. when the air is dry, the fire spreads more rapidly, and you have a gust to push it along, and that's what we're seeing. right to the east of geyserville toward healdsburg, it's going to blow everything toward the ut why healdsburg and windsor are under mandatory evacuation because we don't know how fast this is going to spread. as we look at the satellite and radar, we see the smoke, the thickest smoke and visibility. we've got a lot of cameras on some of th

meteorologist kari hall is tracking those winds. you said you saw an 86-mile-per-hour gust. >> yeah, we did. so that's what's fanning those familiars. you think about the high winds and how exhausting that must be even for the firefighters out there just trying to battle this. but we do have cue temperature this morning. and a lot of the cameras that we're seeing out there are just showing these bright lights. so once the sun comes up, we'll be able to get a better view of what's going on there. but we know that with several different cameras out there on the hills in the north bay, we're just seeing it lit up with all of these flames and then the smoke just billowing out from that. unfortunately that's what we're going to see throughout the day because of these high winds. we talked about how high those winds gusted. mt. st. helena had a wind gust of 86 miles per hour. those are category 1 hurricane-force winds. we're also seeing in hawkeye, 63-mile-per-hour gusts. novato in the hills there, 38-mile-per-hour gusts. heelds burke, 52

kari hall is tracking the conditions. and i know the wind gusts are a big problem in the north bay yesterday and today the wind may cause some air quality issues. >> yes. now we're seeing the snow drifting in and the kincade fire is still burning and not very much containment. so the smoke lifting in the air and shifting in different directions as we're seeing a shift in the winds. it is mostly clear live in walnut creek but we'll see changes through the day and as we look at san francisco and the east bay, the smoke starting to make it in. and some thicker smoke as well moving into the peninsula later on this afternoon. in the south bay, the smoke between 4:00 and 10:00 this evening. so here is what is going on. we'll see our winds coming in from the north. it is only a light wind so we'll see it take its time traveling across the bay area. but once it moves in, we'll be choked out with the smoke with a light wind that won't allow to mix out of the low-lying valleys into tonight and as well as tomorrow. meantime we have

. >> i am, kari especially over the last 15 minutes.ly but we may have seen the earlier metering lights on because we had the early backup. it's 5:20. folks expect the backup but i think it got a head start because of the issue, the crash over in san francisco, which has been cleared as we had hoped at fifth. now all off-ramps are open once again. there's a slower drive but recovering now because of the folks slowed at the toll plaza, making the incline a little bit easier right now. this will disrupt a little bit of the flow, hopefully it won't have a lasting impact. i think they'll speed the metering lights back up to their normal pattern. the rest of the bay shows a nice drive for the tri-valley, over here for 580 and 680. but 580 westbound through greenville, we got the all clear from the chp, they gave a correction and said the slow lane is blocked because of west 580 at greenville there is a truck there, where folks joining off of vasco, jus under a half hour from marsh creek road out of brentwood and byron toward 580, that's a pr

meteorologist kari hall here. what should we expect? >> we're going to need a lot of sunscreen, sunglasses and it will warm up. we're talking about harvey strictly this weekend and that starts today and it is expected to bring 750,000 people into san francisco at golden gate park througho theweekend. that is the look at the beautiful scenery with sunshine. our temperatures are feeling nice and comfortable with mid-60s right now. it is 59 in palo alto. and some upper 60s for the inland areas. as you are making plans, heading out to the sdsu spartans game this evening it is about 66 degrees as that game kicks off. and then it cools down to the lower 60s. so bring a jacket. that is after hitting our high temperature of 76 in san jose. 80 in concord. and napa today reaching 76 degrees. we'll talk more about some events going on and a hotter weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. >>> there is a lot going on in san francisco this weekend. you will not be alone in the city. police and emergency responders are already ready for large week

i've been listening to kari as she's been reporting that. i want to show you the live chopper video over this, because it is so dramatic, you can see how big those flames are, how much area that fire is covering, and how close those flames are to homes. we've just gotten word that another fire started, this one in ventura county, which is right on the border of this fire here, the saddleridge fire we have been talking about this morning. the saddleridge fire started at 10:00 last night. between then and now, it has grown in size to 4,600 acres and that's just the conservative estimate, because that is the latest information that the fire department has been able to provide us with. we'll get a better idea once the sun comes up. at one point the flames jumped a freeway, as we saw happen in santa rosa, so we know what that's like here as we there is zero containment. firefighters are not in control of any part of the perimeter of that fire. firefighters say they saw for themselves that there are homes that are already destroyed, but there's ju

mike, now you have two delays for i-80. >> i do, kari. the first one we know is going to be here at the bay bridge toll plaza, 5:20 we have the metering lights turning on right now and the backup forms because of the volume. everybody converges about this time at least getting from oakland in toward san francisco. now we see the map shows you no other real surprises anywhere south of that bay bridge. there is the slowing at the bay bridge and coming into the area, i-80 has the second of the two issues for that freeway, up in here in fairfield. from fairfield coming in toward the cor delia junction that crash involving a tanker still blocks a fast lane, fire crews on scene, there's no fire, but we are looking at the slower drive that's really starting to build up. over here we have rockville road and cor delia road on either side of i-80 moving smoothly. we should see more traffic hit to the area. if you're familiar with sassoon valley road that won't help you much because it's in the middle of the backup. you can't get there if you're com

now let's check in with meteorologist kari hall, she's been tracking the wind and fire conditions. >> yes, with this round of high winds, we were expecting it to mostly be in the higher elevations and not come all the way down to the valleys like we had on sunday, and that is what happened. we did have those gusts in the healdsburg hills reaching 57 miles per hour. we're still seeing some breezy winds in those areas, near the kincade fire and then we're also dealing with some very cold temperatures this morning, as a lot of people are waking up without power. it's only 35 degrees near santa rosa and napa at 43 degrees, with some lower 50s elsewhere. looking at the outline of the kincade fire, we are seeing this, such a large area that continues to burn and move closer to highway 101 but we are unfortunately going to see this maybe still spreading, going into the rest of the day, as our red flag warning continues. it does end at 4:00 today, although the winds look to calm down a little bit before that in the north bay. we're still looking at the potential of getting gusts up to 65 mile

mike, you have a few developments for the early commute. >> that's right, kari.irst of all looking at the bay bridge, where these lanes are starting to sort themselves out over on the right approach, much less backup for the cash lanes and almost better, these lanes movement but one more cash taker to open up their booth so we still have a little backup there, that will change over the next 15, 20 minutes. nothing surprising on the approach. as far as the maze goes, we're also looking over here. contra costa county looks great. overnight through november 4th, until they finish that construction project there, from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., there will be a full closure of highway 37 through the area, where we typically see fixed up and raised up before the rain e traffic breaks south 101 through the curves, we typically show you in san rafael, i haven't seen any problems, there's reports of a crash there, but a live camera didn't show any slowing. over here no slowing for vasco, down from marsh creek road to 580 and the rest of the bay is okay. back to you. >>> it

meteorologist kari hall is tracking the forecast. do you know what happened? >> we were expecting the winds in the higher elevations so wondering why pg&e would turn off the power in the valleys. we are seeing a high level wind event. so we do still have the red flag warning in effect as we're seeing very low humidity and some of the gusts that could peak up to 65 miles per hour. looking at the east bay, still under the red flag warning continuing until 4:00 today and you could see the smoke from the fire looking at -- from healdsburg hills looking at the kincade fire, we are going to potentially still see that billowing today. but we did get some really high wind gusts and this would be significant if we didn't just have 90-mile-per-hour winds. but we are looking at this morning some of the winds reaching 60 miles per hour and up to 57 in mt. diablo. and atlas peak, a gust of 76 and st. helena had a gust at 58. so it was high and enough to fan the flames so it was good even with that they were still able to work on that fire and get more containment. we're no

another wind event that kari mentioned is expected to trigger more power outages in the hartest hit area. kris sanchez joins us live from san jose with more on that. chr kris. >> because the restoration process could take longer than expected because of some really powerful gifts, they're warning some of the folks in the hardest hit areas that they should expect to be without power right on through the next wind event. now in marin county which had 118,000 customers in the dark, the most out of any bay bridge county. folks are being told to be prepared to be without power perhaps through wednesday. pg&e crews have been out inspecting equipment since 6:00 this morning. here is a pg&e map of where the shutoffs are still in effect and believe it or not that is an improvement. the pink dots there are p.s. outages and the green and yellow is where the power is out for some other reason likely wind damage. as you know by now, turning the electricity back on isn't as easy as flicking the switch. >> we have to take extra time and make sure there is no damage to the equipment and that there is no

kari tracking the temperatures and tells us when a warmup arrives.in the bay" continues right now. we say continues because we've been on with special reports since 4:00 this morning, trying to bring you the very latest with the kincade fires, the power outages, everything you need to know. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to talk about the winds, they did pick up overnight but we have been hearing from firefighters on the ground that the effort to hold back the spread of the fire went better than expected. the fire now going into its seventh day, it's still threatening a number of sonoma county towels, healdsburg, windsor and geyserville. >> kohlfire's first update won't come until later this morning but as of last night, the 76,000 acres burn still at 15% containment. close to 200

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. we've started at 4:00 this morning and we've seen the wind gusts throughout the morning. >> and we've seen the fire spread rapidly. we can see the smoke billowing up in the air. whoa can tell by this view that the winds aren't really flattening out. that smoke is not gusting that high even at this elevation. we still do have enough of that air to allow flames to spread quickly. this camera from mt. tam look, winds blowing it off the coast. spring fire to the south of santa rosa, not as much smoke. this is near anondale state park. hopefully we're getting some containment on this one. this is threatening the most populated areas across the bay and most of sonoma county. we are seeing on the satellite imagery a lot of smoke being picked up here. these are not clouds. this is smoke that's being trapped in some of those areas and providing for some very low air quality. we're also seeing in the hilly terrain near santa rosa that is really being choked out by the ske dripping in. coming in

mike, you spotted a new crash in dublin. >> i did, kari. from the speed sensors over there, it's not presenting a problem, but want to give it a shout out. looking at the speed sensors all over the bay, which look great for your commute right now. westbound 580 your commute direction at airway as you come through livermore there is a crash reportedly blocking part of your slow lane, should be off to the shoulder but at least a distraction for these folks coming out of the altamont. slowing north 680 past vargas, typically an overnight crew there. i haven't heard about any problems though. southbound vasco, you see the slowing here as you narrow it down to one lane, that last stretch before 580 but the slowing off marsh creek road is clear but at marsh creek road all the folks joining brentwood, slowing things down a bit. you know it's just the pattern for the morning commute. a smooth drive through the rest of contra costa county at speed for highway 4, 24 and the bay bridge toll plaza you have the backup forming at the toll plaza, and the

kari hall timing it all out. >> it looks good as we get r to head out and we're nearing that lunch hour. more people will be going outside as we see all of this sunshine looking live right now in walnut creek, it is a beautiful start to the day. we're heading quickly into the upper 70s by the afternoon. so a warm-up happens very fast as we go hour-by-hour for all of our microclimates we take it to 1:00. we're at 75 in concord. 73 in novato and san francisco still in the mid-60s. in the south bay we're at 73 degrees and then going into the rest of the day, we'll see those highs in the upper 70s and in many spots, a few areas reach the low 80s into tonight we'll see a dropping back into the low 50s and we may start out tomorrow morning again in the 40s with a few north bay valleys in the 30s. so it is going to be another cool night ahead. we're going to feel weather on repeat with a few minor changes ahead. i'll talk about those changes as we go into the next several days where we may see a slight chance of rain. i'll have more on that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. >> thank

kari, you mentioned that on "today in the bay." >> yes. so we're starting out with a cooldown and it is still warm. tomorrow is when the cold front comes through and we'll see our winds picking up. as we take a live look outside at clear lake, we're looking around the bay area and there are several new cameras set up around the mountaintops from the north bay to the south bay and the santa cruz mountains so we're able to get a bird's-eye view to see if there is smoke rising up from any we're still looking at above-normal temperatures reaching into the low to mid-80s, for the inland areas and upper 80s in spots like antioch and morgan hill but much cooler air moving into the coast. going into tomorrow, once again, that front startsrigh colors in where the winds will start to gust. and we take you through tomorrow morning at 2:00 and we'll start to see the winds picking up but the humidity high. but then look at what happens going throughout the day. the humidity starts to come down and the winds will stay strong. so that is why tomorrow aft

meteorologist kari hall is here with halloween and the smoke forecast. >> yeah. we've had some good news today. i wanted to show you a comparison shot. yesterday, looking from st. helena at the kincade fire, you see all the smoke coming off from the hills. we had some lower containment yesterday. this is what it looks like currently from that same view. we are seeing much less smoke and also you can see the fire retardant on the hills as they get more containment. here is a look at the outline. fire perimeter. over 60,000 acres burned. that's a lot of land burned but we are starting to make some headway. we're starting to see smoke drift n you can't even see the hills here looking from san jose. you can see the downtown area in the foreground. some drifts of smoke coming in. a lot ofs that been blowing off the coast. we'll see the shift in the wind going into the afternoon. that will bring that smoke into the east bay and eventually down into the south bay. we'll talk more about the air quality in time for trick-or-treating and what else is ahead for the forecast
