the album is coming out. >> kari, are you kari this morning?be the meteorologist formerly known as kari. who knows. let's get you started with a look at our forecast for today while i'm still kari. our temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s for a high this afternoon. it's going to be another really nice one. morgan hill heading up to 80 degrees today. we've enjoyed the low 80s for much of the east bay and take it in one last day without the air conditioning because as the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen it's going to be heating up as we get closer to the weekend. 72 for a high in hayward and for the cloip it's still i low 60s, daly city, and half moon bay, mid 70s, palo alto. 64 for a high today in the mission district. clearlake heading toward 85 while napa will see a high of 75 degrees there. a shift in the wind direction makes a huge difference. a westerly wind brings in the cool ocean air and it's going to keep also fresher as far as the air quality. then when we start to see a southerly wind in spots for the inlan

kari, how is it looking for us? i know the surface smoke is something to be concerned about. >> we saw that over the weekend. it looks so hazy. and even this morning as the sun was coming up you could see that eerie orange sky that we are definitely not hoping to see anymore. as we take a look at our es show some improvement as we go into this afternoon and into the evening. looks like it clears out for a little while, but unfortunately it doesn't last too long by tomorrow into wednesday we could see a change in the wind direction that could bring that smoke right back down to the bay area. so when you see the sky looks blue, get out and enjoy it because we are going to see more changes. a shift in the wind direction, and this is what we were talking about late tuesday night into early wednesday morning the winds will pick up for some of the hills. most of us won't feel it in the valley, but for the east bay as well as parts of the north bay, a dry northerly wind could mean an increase in our fire danger. so we're m

kari hall keeping track of what we can expect. when it comes to 4:36 in the morning. not a bad shot to get started with the day. >> we are seeing clouds overhead and at times we will see more of the smoke coming in, and that's going to be a concern as you are making plans to get outside. we are also going to be seeing temperatures -- still nice and cool now, but it's going to heat up. walnut creek, now at 60 degrees, and we will see it go from the low 60s to the upper 60s at 11:00. a look at the high temperatures this afternoon, reaching up to 85 degrees in concord, and 76 degrees in napa. still looking great for today. we have to be mindful of the air quality if you are spending more time out there in the more comfortable temperatures. it will heat up going into next week, and we'll talk about that coming up in the next few minutes. >>> we have a nice flow of traffic getting up to the contra costa area. highway 4 typically has more of a difficult drive. we talked about highway closures for highway 37 overnight. still going on one direction only, but you might want to

so is meteorologist kari hall coming off a pretty nice weekend. we had a spare the air alert yesterday, but it's an advisory. >> if you're sensitive to the smoke you need to limit your time outside. it's going to look a little hazy today but not as smoky as it was on saturday. we're starting out this morning live look at the golden gate bridge and you can see that there is some low clouds draped over the bridge heading across the bay to oakland. as you're stepping out the door the temperatures in the upper 50s. we are still going to have some warm air today. headed towards the low 70s by early in the afternoon. and for some of our inland spots we're reaching back into the mid 90s, 95 in antioch today. san francisco in the upper 60s. we'll talk about all of the changes ahead. mike, seeing more lights on the bay bridge. >> changes in the present. we're starting to see this stack up. it's not as bad as it could be. for time to time we see about half the parking lot level filled in and then eases up. may be adjusting the speed on the metering lights.

thanks for waking up get right meteorologist kari hall. she's tracking air qty conditions for us. >> we are going to see a lot of changes because of the caldor fire that continues to burn with very little containment and we are seeing some spots getting some improvement today in the north bay. you will have a chance to breathe some fresher air as well as parts of the south bay. moderate air quality for the coast and the bayp, the east bay and santa clara valley. there will be drifts of smoke coming in, but much of that smoke is now moving off to the east towards tahoe as it continues to burn over sierra and the coast is looking better today as well as the north bay. we're going to be watching this. a slight shift in the wind direction could change our air quality. we're going to see that as we head through the week as our temperatures warm up. more on that in a few minutes. >> the caldor fire in el dorado county it is the top priority. the fires jumped highway 50, closing in on lake tahoe. fire officials worry changing winds and bone dry v

kari, i want to show you live shot from emeriville just yet.t the lens, and can't see the treasure island tunnel, but i am tracking a crash on treasure island. >> hopefully visibility is good. we have seen fog drifting around. as we also talk about what may be drifting around, smoke. here's a look at the near surface smoke model. where we see red shows very unhealthy air quality. this is expected for parts of the santa cruz mountains and east bay. it's going to get really unhealthy tomorrow as we see the fires exploding and putting a lot of smo area. as we look at our today, the inland east bay, upper 60s for the peninsula, and low to mid-60s for san francisco, and upper 90s for ukiah, and santa rosa in the middle with upper 70s. we will see cool weather continue today and then heat up tomorrow. for the weekend it gradually cools off sunday into early next week. san francisco, we will see more highs in the mid to upper 60s, and a mix of sun and clouds but a lot of drizzle starting out this morning. as we turn to our climate in crisis, we have b

so, kari. >> right. >> kari, can you deliver? >> i guess. looking pretty good.etimes starting out with some fog is a good thing too because that helps cool us off across the bay area. as we head across the bay in oakland a nice clear view there. let's go to the south bay looking at our high temperatures this afternoon, reaching 80 in morgan hill, we're still enjoying some cooler than normal weather than what we normally have at the end of august. in walnut creek we're heading up to 80 degrees and 72 in hayward, oakland up to 68, 62 in daly city. this is the weather we've had from the past few days and it does continue. a very brisk westerly wind in san francisco that will keep those temperatures cooler there reaching 65 downtown and 75 in napa, 74 in santa rosa and some upper 80s around ukiah and clearlake. we're going to see a shift in the wind direction. this really going to make a huge difference. the kind of temperatures we're going to feel by tomorrow, a little bit more of a southerly wind picking up and by friday, is when we really start to feel the return

kari, still a lot of concern people have family members in that area. >> yeah. it's, of course, when you have a category 3 hurricane, possible moving over water that's about 90 degrees, that's going to cause what's now a tropical storm to quickly intensify over the weekend as it moves through the gulf. it looks like the possibility of up to 15 inches of rain in a city that's below sea level could be devastating for the weekend. so we're going to continue to monitor that as yes, we have a lot of friends and family in that area. as we bring you back home we're going to deal with heat going into the start of the weekend. today we're going to see some of our inland temperatures reaching into the upper 90s. up to 100 degrees for spots like antioch. we're going to continue to monitor this and air quality. mike, how is it looking for commute in. >> we might have reason why there's a slowing. our buddy shawn at the desk scanned the reports and there's fire activity over here off the side of the road. north 101 around capital between capital and tully it's been there for

let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. kari? >> yeah. we are seeing the caldor fire burning many acres across the tahoe basin and sierra closer to the tahoe basin as we've seen over the past few days, over the past 13 days, over 139,000 acres have burned. right now it's about 12% contained. this is an outline of the perimeter of that fire and how much has burned over the past several days as it moves a little bit closer. as our weather pattern changes we're going to see more of that smoke coming into the bay area starting today and continuing throughout the weekend as we get hot temperatures and that smoke drifting right in, making it unhealthy to spend long periods of time outside. we're monitoring that and also what's going on in our forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks so much. we'll check back with you. >>> discouraging new developments this morning in the frontlines of the caldor wildfire advancing towards lake tahoe. evacuation warnings for the first time for residents inside the tahoe basin as the fire yesterday grew by another 13

how is it looking out there, kari? >> a lot of people waking up early and taking the dog for a walk, and it's going to be cool this morning as we look outside live in san francisco. we are going to see the clouds and fog with us for much of the morning and clearing out today as our temperatures here near the coast stay fairly cool. we are looking at the upper 60s today and as we look inland, this is where we crank up the heat. antioch reaching 94. warmer in san jose, but not too bad. 82. 82 in palo alto. napa today headed towards 87 for today. we're also still enjoying good air quality, a little moderate for some parts of the inland east bay, and if you are sensitive to the smoke you need to limit your time outside and then by tomorrow we are all going to need to limit our time outside and it's going to turn much more unhealthy. the map pretty much turns red and we are going to see a lot more of the smoke coming in as we don't get our natural air-conditioning, and as that backs off we will see a lot of the fires to the

meteorologist kari hall certainly always keeping her eyes on that. smoky saturday in my neighborhood but cleared on sunday. what are we in store for today? >> we did have the spare the air alert meaning that we are experiencing unhealthy air quality. it has been downgraded to an air quality advisory, a level below a spare the air alert. as we take a look at our centers right now, the green sensors end gait good air quality, moderate for the yellow dots and still orange, unhealthy in the tri-valley this morning as you get ready to head out. we are expecting some improvement today. still going to be smoky for the start of the day but then the winds kick up and pushes out the smoke, the smoke pushes to the east as we go into this evening. we will continue to see some improvement here, but those strong winds will fan the flames of the caldor fire and push it closer to lake tahoe with the westerly wind. mike is saying everything for the commute is looking pretty good. kari. >> let's get a look at what we've been dealing with. our air quality across the bay area with a live look outside in dublin as you get ready to head out the door. we are still under the air quality advisory due to the smoke and the most unhealthy will be in parts of the north bay. when we look at these numbers that is a measure of the particulate matter from the smoke seeing it above the 50, that number 50 is basically moderate air quality under that is good. so we are going to see unhealthy air quality at times for people who are sensitive to the smoke. at the same time we've seen showers just off the coast with some rain that's staying away from us nor now but as we go into today we will watch out for some chances that we could see some rain in the north bay later on tonight. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now for the early morning commute. >> we're going to call it good fortune friday. put it out there and see what happens. good drive right now. no major problems. we have a crash

story before we get to kari because the wildfire is burning to our east. that wildfire ravaging another neighborhood with evacuation and rescue efforts underway. this is in el dorado county between sacramento and tahoe. this with cal fire resources already stretched thin by the dixie fire and other out-of-control wildfires. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez here with the latest covid into our newsroom and new information. so concerning with these fires breaking out across our state. >> we know that at least one person was burned by the fire that started on saturday, but which exploded overnight. our crews spotted an ambulance into the danger zone to reach that person and we also know that several structures have already burned although cal fire is still fighting the fire and not stopping to take stock. there are mandatory evacuation orders in effect in that area. this is the area where the caldor fire is burning. if you're familiar, grizzly flats and happy valley are under evacuation orders. it is a tough fire fight cal fire says because of the rugged t

i know you've lived in that area before, kari. it's a scary situation. >> does it sound like a freight train? >> yes, it does. it sounds like a roar like a bear just constantly. and think about going that for 24 hours. i lived in lafayette during hurricane katrina when it made landfall. and that area port fourchon had wind speeds of 172 miles per hour. so that's what that looked like as that made landfall as a category 4 yesterday. and even though it's this far inland, look at it right over about jackson, mississippi, it's still a tropical storm usually as it quickly moves inland, it does weaken. and this is moving so slowly, it's dumping a lot of rain. they're looking at the potential of about 24 inches of rain. and that doesn't include the storm surge that they had. that's that wall of water that was pushed up by that hurricane as it made landfall around those coastal areas. but as of right now it looks like new orleans is in the clear as that storm continues to move off towards the north and east. we're tracking the caldor fire

meteorologist kari hall you've been monitoring all of this for us. are we going to see any change with the shift in wind to clear some of the smoke out? >> i think it's going to be better to stay at home. we are seeing improvements in our air quality here as we take a look at our surface smoke model forecast. we are still looking at some drifts of smoke in parts of the south bay and east bay but we are expecting it to get better going into the afternoon once the westerly wind picks up we often see during the afternoon. it continues to look pretty good for the next couple days. you may see that smoke returning to the north bay by tomorrow afternoon. but these fires once again spreading all of that smoke across the bay area, across the state. and it will most likely continue, especially if you do travel off towards the east. our temperatures today coming down thanks to that breezy ocean breeze that's going to be picking up today. in santa rosa, we're heading toward 81 today. still hot in antioch reaching 91 but that's an improvement over the triple dig

meteorologist kari hall standing by with that. >> it's all about the smoke and our air quality that's been changing day by day as well as microclimate by microclimate. yesterday was a pretty unhealthy in parts of the north bay looking better today and for the coast and bay, moderate air quality and the east bay and santa clara valley. for the south bay along the bay it's going to be pretty good today. as we've seen some improvements in our air quality it may be one of the better days to get outside especially near the coast and in parts of the north bay before we see some changes ahead. looking at the bigger picture a lot of smoke traveling off towards the east over lake taho as well as the fire spreading in that direction. this morning, the caldor fire is being called the nation's number one priority. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live with the latest overnight developments. >> reporter: good morning to you, kari. that caldor fire is now considered a national priority because the fire is starting to make a run toward the tahoe basin and we know that there is a lot of population t

mike, you're looking at a crash in san francisco. >> kari, it's been there over an hour. about 3:00 this morning, we're told it's going to take an hour until they can get the tow truck on scene. green sensors around the bay. the crash is in san francisco north of 280 that's offs the split there. 101 northbound at cesar chavez, a crash involving what i'm told is a dump truck as well as a dump truck with some debris from a construction site. they're both there. they need larger tow trucks and that's the reason for the delay. everything else is fine so you can take 280 and the extension, city streets or silver to get into the city. back to you. >> good to know. thanks so much. >>> a covid outbreak in east contra costa school is expanding one week after students returned to the classroom. this morning liberty high school district is reporting five more covid cases according to the "east bay times." that brings the total to 15 cases. another 15 students and five staff members also tested positive, but they never came on to campus. the superintendent says they're committed to s

. >> first let's check in with kari hall. set the scene for us. what are we in store weather wise for us today? they really look at those conditions. >> the wind was kicking up yesterday and that fanned the flames and caused it to spread farther. the red dots indicate where we are seeing active fires burning. according to my estimates some of the leading edges of the fire is only at about 4 miles away from south lake tahoe and you can see that we are seeing this, it's been very erratic because some of the embers kicking up can kick those new fires off about a mile away from some of the very active flames and fires we've seen over the past 24 hours. red flag warning as you mentioned going up. they actually extended it from today at 11:00 to 11:00 tomorrow evening. it does look like these conditions will persist where we're getting these west/southwest early winds at about 20 to 35 miles per hour but may be isolated gusts up to 50 miles per hour. it's really going to be dangerous here. we're in this critical timeframe where we could see this spreadi

let's bring in meteorologist kari hall as well. the smoky conditions we've seen all the way here in the bay area. >> yeah. we still are tracking that active rate of spread for the fire. your heart just breaks this morning seeing what's going on. so i've put a map here with the yellow dots showing all of the areas that have burned and then the red dots show where the active fire is still happening and where it's making some forward progress. we know that it's continuing to move very close to south lake tahoe. now starting to enter into the tahoe basin, it's going downhill and spreading closer to the lake tahoe, south lake tahoe area. so we've also been seeing a lot of that smoke moving in, but what's going to happen today is our winds are going to pick up. a westerly wind is going to clear out the smoke, but also push the fire around the caldor fire off towards the east and firefighters are trying to get some containment on this now with some new red flag warnings going up for this region. with the wind coming out of the west/southw

we love it, kari. going to heat up?yes, it's going to heat up but it's going to be a critical weekend for the caldor fire. this is something we are going to be watching very closely. this red outline shows the burn scar area or where that fire is actively burning, and some of it crossed highway 50 as well as a large area that has been covered in steep and rigorous terrain. we look at how close it is the to lake tahoe, because with the shifting wind this weekend it's possible it could make a run closer to the tahoe area. the leading edge of the fire is 14 miles away as the crow flies, and there's steep and rugged terrain but we could see it moving in that direction as the wind shifts. a very critical weekend. we will see changes in our air quality as the wind changes. we are going to see good air quality today near the coast. moderate for the north bay and eastbound. it's going to make it unhealthy to be outside, not only tomorrow but the weekend as we will see the temperatures cranking up and this smoke starting to real

i want to check the forecast right now with meteorologist kari hall. look at that behind you. >> it looks so bad out there. and this toxic air moving from that grizzly area over towards sierra/tahoe. this is the orange sky coming from all of the smoke that's been drifting by. and our fire danger will be quite high for parts of the bay area going into tonight where we see these areas shaded in red. these are elevations above 1,000 feet that will be under the areas where we could see some of those winds gusting up to 55 miles per hour. so we talked about the potential of getting your power shut off tonight in parts of the north bay. you will have already received those alerts if you are impacted by that. and so as we go into tonight, the winds pick up and we do see the risk of some potential new fire starts. and we are looking at right now cooler temperatures, a stronger westerly wind that's helping to clear out the area in some spots. but we are going to see those winds shifting by later tonight and our temperatures will be going up tomorrow. so we're g

meteorologist kari hall of course keeping track of all this. so break down what we've been able to find out. >> i feel like a broken record talking about these records, but it seems like every summer we just get hotter and hotter. and it's not your imagination. this june and july were the hottest on record. now, noaa basically took the average temperature across the state and saw that it was 6.8 degrees above normal in june and 5.3 degrees above normal in july. and our last record was 2020 right before all of those fires broke out, and we had the previous record there. now we are setting a new one. but if you're in san francisco and you're thinking it's been so chilly here, well, it doesn't really apply to san francisco because you didn't even get to 70 degrees for the first time in over 50 years. this averages all of the temperatures around the state, and overall it was much warmer than normal. and unfortunately that has led to the drought that we're seeing as well as the record wildfires. we'll be watching this as well as what's ahead. i'm go

let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. air quality is going to be bad today. >> yeah.obably going to be the worst we've seen so far this year because of the air quality and the shift in the direction of the wind is going to bring in a lot more smoke today. as of now, we haven't had that shift in the wind. still a westerly breeze bringing in some fresh air from the ocean but that will change as our winds pick up later today. we're going to start to see in the north bay very unhealthy air quality that will continue and spread down the peninsula into the south bay as well as the east bay and really settling into a lot of our valleys. it continues tomorrow as we have numerous fires burni o

to do that follow her, follow kari on instagram, facebook and twitter.hing "today in the bay." >>> delta variant is surging and covid testing is up again. chris chmura shows us how to get a test now and who pays for it. >> each day 1.3 million are getting a covid test back up where we were in may. luckily getting a test is easier now than at the start of the pandemic. many doctors offices and pharmacies are doing them now and many drug stores will let you schedule online and drive through. it's also now possible to test yourself at home. for a while you could choose a big public testing site that was free. many of those are closed. though some are now reopening. here's what you need to do. contact public health to find out where they're reopening and when. if you have to take a test go to your job ask your boss if there's designated a free testing site. ask your public health office where the closest free public testing site is. say you're feeling sick or worry you've been exposed. call your health plan and ask. find out what's covered and what's not and

monitoring it all for us as meteorologist kari hall tracking those conditions. the fire continues to rage on. >> it does. and it's not too far away. but the smoke is blowing away from us for the most part, and the clouds that we are seeing this morning getting a little bit of that smoke mixing in. but it is starting to clear up around fremont. and while we do see a hazy sky, we look at our current air quality sensors, they are all green right now showing what we are breathing in near the surface is actually pretty good at this point. but it does look hazy out there. and that will continue today for the coast as well as the south bay we do have good air quality that's expected to continue through the afternoon, but moderate for the north bay, east bay as well as santa clara valley. we're still nice and cool today after that cloudy start, and our high temperatures are headed toward the 60s, 70s, and low 80s. we'll talk more about what to expect going into the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, good, because we'll need to prepare. next new de

we want to go to meteorologist kari hall right now. kari, you've been tracking that air quality and the communications that we're experiencing. >> we're expecting some clearing today as we get some cooler temperatures and a nice ocean breeze picking up. this is a look from our heavenly camera. and you can see all of the smoke, the orange sky, and definitely some of the fire that's moving closer to the heavenly ski resort. it's really surreal to see this happening right now. we of course continue to watch the very unpredictable conditions that we are seeing around the fires as they generate their own weather. and we have a red flag warning. the wind that's helping to clear out the bay area smoke is also pushing the fire closer to south lake tahoe as it continues off towards the east. but we once again are expecting good air quality for today. but then by tomorrow we start to see some of that smoke returning to the north bay. still does look good for the rest of the bay area up until noon, and then we start to see the hazy conditions ret

kari, pretty mild temperatures this week. >> yeah. looks pretty good. it's a beautiful start to our monday morning. we've seen the fog off the coast and we have a clear view. a look at the golden gate bridge this morning, another vantage point. i wanted to show you what it looks like over san jose as you're waking up and see the orange know through the blinds, get that camera ready, take a nice shot of our beautiful sunrise. it's just about under way about four minutes away. we'll see the sun coming over the hills. right now temperatures in the upper 50s, headed toward the mid 70s for later this morning into the afternoon with our highs reaching up to about 80 degrees and 91 today in concord. napa today reaching 81 and some mid 60s in san francisco. it stays pretty much like this week. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. you're seeing different patterns at two bridges. >> first the bay bridge toll plaza we saw that backup a little stronger in the beginning and now it's easing up and clearing as we get chose to just after 6:00. at 6:00 things started

kari, everything else looks clear.clouds. >> yeah, starting out cloudy and foggy and once that cleared out it will be replaced with smoke. the near surface smoke model, parts of the east bay, air quality gets a little more unhealthy today and very unhealthy for the north bay as we see numerous fires burning across the state. a slight change in the wind direction will change things for us and possibly we will see the worst air quality we have had in a long time. it will be like it was yesterday, 90s in an ae talk, and further to the north we will see mid to upper 90s. the temperatures heat up even more going into the next few days, especially tomorrow. temperatures spike and then come back down. for san francisco we are going to see the highs continue in the upper 60s. >>> let's turn to our climate in crisis. the state's largest reservoir has dropped to record low water levels. it has a hydroelectroplant that provided electricity, and now the reservoir you can see has bathtub rings, and no place for the house bodes to s

kris sanchez live with the latest overnight development. >> reporter: hi there, kari. yes, the caldor fire nun towards the tahoe basin. we know there is a lot of population there. now the fire jumps highway 50 and is now headed into the tahoe basin. it has fuel to burn because of extreme dry vegetation and also changing winds. here's where the picture is right now. 114,000 acres are now charred. at least 600 homes are now destroyed. 25,000 people are displaced and may not have anything to go back to and the fire is only 9% contained. >> it just blew up super fast, super fast. you know, we're canyons and this is rugged territory and resources were on the dixie fire. that's just how it is. >> reporter: some folks may have plans to go to tahoe and might want to rethink those plans, nothing to see, nothing to do with the thick and heavy smoke. the visibility is terrible. the air quality is at abysmal. also, there's the factor of leaving the roadways for folks to get out instead of clogging them with people going in. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >>> devel
