meteorologist kari all tracking conditions and what will firefighters face ? >> still very windy in the area and we were watching that chance of lightning strikes, temperatures are fairly mild and humidity is high and it slows the movement of the forward threat of the fire but it has been so explosive. our temperature start out in the low 70s and we will go to the mid-80s this afternoon look at the guests in the forecast, 26 miles per hour for today, as well as high humidity. also we see some of the outflows from some of the showers and some of the fires in the area. there is a little rain headed towards northern california, we are seeing spotty showers throughout the area out the door and there is a error area of dry air under it says somewhat operating some will make it to the ground. there is still a chance of seeing very active weather over the next couple of hours. so far we have not seen any lightning strikes, just a little bit of rain here and there and watching out for the spotty showers. not really in marin county but parts of napa and sonoma county i

kari, how hot are we talking about here? >> today we're still feeling mild weather but it will ramp up quickly into the next couple of days. in hayward, expect a high of 74 degrees, 84 in novato. in san francisco, we're in the upper 60s. for tomorrow it's going to start to get a little bit warmer in morgan hills, san martin, and concord, reaching 99 and 102 in fairfield. on friday, more of the same temperatures. as we see this heat dome developing across the region, it will start to increase the hot temperatures all across the west. and it will give us the possibility of some record highs. we're going to start to see the excessive heat warning going into effect on saturday morning and continuing through tuesday evening. so this is a prolonged heat wave. we're dealing with a lot of widespread temperatures in the upper 90s, up to 110 degrees. now, this extreme heat is getting the attention of state leaders and nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab continues our team coverage. >> reporter: governor newsom is expected any moment n

meteorologist kari hall is here.i, a lot of the places can use this rain, just not that much in that short amount of time. >> right. we've been talking about how big the drought is in that area. when you get that amount of rain t basically runs off, causes a lot of flooding. it doesn't really soak into the ground, so you can see the satellite and the radar showing that now that storm has passed and continues to move off to the east. then as we take a look at the widespread drought situation, it's basically what we're seeing here in california, where there's a lot of reds and dark reds. the highest level of drought they've seen in a long time. once again the hardness in the ground that makes the water run off instead of just soaking in not beneficial but can cause a lot of problems and that's something that if we had a heavy rainfall, we would have those concerns as well. so we will continue to watch that, as we do bring it back home and talk about what to expect for today, we're headed for 80 degrees in fremont, and

first let's get to meteorologist kari hall. still warm today. is this the beginning of the cooldown? >> we'll start to have the cooldown over the next few days. it won't feel any cooler today as we're dealing with spotty showers. it just moved through the south bay, through palo alto. now heading to the north. it's affecting parts of the east bay heading over toward dublin and will be approaching san ramon soon. we'll see the off-and-on showers moving through the bay area and that high humidity with us into the afternoon. we're closely monitoring this because there could be some lightning strikes especially later this morning into the afternoon. we know that the brush, the vegetation is extremely dry and a lightning strike could start some new wildfires. we're very concerned about that today, especially in the north bay as we go into this afternoon, even though the temperatures are coming down a couple degrees, it's still going to be hot as many kids are back first day. we'll take a look at the forecast and what's ahead for the weekend in a few
