first, let's get to meteorologist kari hall. kari, you've been timing out the storm. where is it now? >> mostly the north bay right now. that's where we're going to see more widespread rain in the next couple of hours. but we've also seen spotty activity moving through san francisco and now into the east bay as we continue to track some of that rain moving into the delta. as we get a closer look at the north bay, we are seeing light to moderate rain, just enough to wet the roads as you're getting ready to head out the door. we're seeing the scattered activity continue as it moves down to santa rosa, petaluma and fairfax as well. moving over toward the east bay, cord, san ramon, starting to see it easing up. we're going to be seeing this coming in waves. now the rain is picking up in antioch and moving toward brentwood and will soon be in discovery bay. for thepeninsula, it is still mostly dry with lighter shrs on the coast and we are still also waiting on rain in san jose. but the center of the storm is still well to the north of us and we have to work through a lot o

kari, we saw bob redell also getting some rain. it seems a little widespread at this point. >> yeah, it's been all over the bay area. for most of us we've seen the rain for quite a while at this point. it is starting to taper off farther to the north, but santa rosa getting the last little bits of that light rain as it continues to move over toward napa, solano counties, as well as san francisco, down to the south bay. so we're going to see this moving through fairly quickly as we are now seeing some of those raindrops hitting the camera lens in san jose. still not really soaked as of yet because we are going to see the rain linger here a lot longer compared to the rest of the bay area, all the way up until 9:00 we'll see on and off light showers. the rest of the day we will be clearing out and mostly sunny, but only headed for 57 degrees and 55 in oakland, as well as novato, 53 in san francisco, and concord today reaching 57 degrees. we'll talk about the storm that's coming in tomorrow with a timeline hour-by-hour that's coming up

let's start out with meteorologist kari hall.m strengthen in the past few hours. >> yeah. we were expecting it to be a late-morning storm to have the highest impact. it will continue for the next couple hours. wz 'look at stormranger, we can see where some of the yellows and reds are coming up, and that is indicating where the heaviest rainfall is hitting, and that is right over parts of the bay bridge, extending over toward oakland, alameda, and lafayette and concord, as well as down to san leandro and hayward as well. for the south bay, it's been very spotty and light, but it has continued to pick up from morgan hill to gilroy as a lot of this rain is moving over the santa cruz mountains. we just clocked a 62-mile-per-hour wind gust in los gatos, so we are really starting to see the winds picking up out ahead of these very intense lines of showers that are moving through. but we are also picking up on some gusty winds, and in some spots some pockets of heavier rain around redwood city and crossing the bay and heading into the e

kari. >> good morning. i know we were trying to escape all of this cold weather.s never ending. and even as i'm looking at the models, okay, when is this going to end? it is really bad. let's talk about this incoming storm. i don't know if i've ever said it this much, but we have another bomb cyclone coming. this is an area of low pressure that strengthens 24 millibars in 24 hours, so that's the pressure within the area of low pressure, and when we do see storms intensifying like this, it increases our wind gusts and we are looking at peak winds at about 60 miles per hour. this starts later tonight and continues through tomorrow as we are going to see those winds picking up as the storm approaches. but we're also, by the end of the storm, going to see anywhere from three-quarters of an inch of rain in some of the valleys to possibly four inches of rainfall. we see that in the typical spots like the santa cruz mountains and parts of the coastal north bay. and then for our hills, another coating of snow as you go up above about 3,000 feet. so that's a lot of our hil

we're joined by meteorologist kari hall. she's timing out when the storm is expected to move in. >> maybe the sun is deceiving. this is our time to prepare for the storm that's going to be coming. we've been using the term "bomb cyclone." what does that mean? well, we measure the intensity of the area of low pressure. near the center of the storm, we're seeing the pressure dropping at a very intense rate. if we see it drops 20 millibars in 24 hours, it mean this storm is bottoming out and it's getting much stronger as we're seeing all that moisture swirling into that area of low pressure. that's going to be heading in. in fact, this is the third bomb cyclone we've had this season. we're seeing the storm rapidly producing heavy rain as well as gusty winds, and we're going to see the impact of all the high winds and rain hitting us by this time tomorrow morning. for much of the bay area, we're going to have heavy rain and gusty winds, but there should be heavy winds tapering off before the evening after that, we'll see thunder

meteorologist kari hall. what we are used to seeing and it has changed. >> it has changed significantly. we wanted to take a look at the way we started the water year in october where there was a lot of red and even a lot of the dark red which was the highest level drought, exceptional. so now we've seen major improvements after all of those storms looking all across the region and for the bay area and even last week we saw a big chunk of california from the central valley to the central sierra taken out of the drought after all of the heavy rain and snow. so now even more of the bay area is no longer in a drought. we've seen more significant improvements as well as in northern california and parts of lake and mendocino counties and napa as well as solano counties right now are abnormally dry which are not technically in a drought. so we have been taken out of a drought status after we see the storms coming through and i want to show you the outlook for the next week or so where it still shows that we will ha

let's bring in meteorologist kari hall.tart of spring may be about 13 days away, but in tahoe you would never know it. >> it's been unreal to see all of the snow recently. i want to give you some perspective and i know a lot of people are saying is this the record? let's take a look back at 2022, where at this point the center snowpack was at 62% of normal and the average depth of about 14 inches. well, this year we're at 192% of normal and the average depth is about 65 inches. so, yeah, that's a huge difference. but the central sierra snow lab is saying as of today we're at 580 inches of snow measured. that is more than 48 feet. but the all-time record, well, that happened in 1951-52, where 811 inches of snow fell. and, yes, we know that this sierra snow season is not over yet. we have more snow in the forecast and the potential of getting anywhere from 32 to close to 80 inches of snow between now and march 14th. and we do see several more big storms on the horizon. we're going to continue to watch out for that potential,

kari, the showers will be lingering today? >> it's going to be off and on.an see a shower coming down in the distance there in that view. now, we're also going to see it in waves as we look at the peninsula, parts of the east bay, and when we do get the rain it's going to be heavy for a few minutes, but then if you wait about 15, 20 minutes, it should lighten up or maybe even end altogether. we can see the rain moving over toward hayward, oakland, san leandro, moving toward lafayette and concord, and once again it's off and on as the storm system spins nearby. so the rain continues for much of today, even some thunderstorms that will be possible as the hail could also be developing in some of those isolated cells that move through today with some high wind gusts at times. and this will all wrap up with snow on some of our bay area hills in elevations above 2,500 feet. >>> mike, you've been watching the roads. >> hayward is getting more activity very soon, and right now we saw it sweeping over from the peninsula a few minutes ago. still evident on this live s

right, kari? >> we'll see more waves of rain and it's going to be very hit or miss because we're seeing videos of hail in san jose and it wasn't too far away. that's the mixed bag of weather we've seen. and we also have this winter weather advisory, it has been dropped for the santa cruz mountains and as well mount hamilton, only in effect for the north bay where we're already seeing some snow coming down for those elevations at about 1,500 feet or above. and then elsewhere we're seeing some rain as it does continue to pick up in some spots, especially over coastal marin county, much of sonoma county getting a light to moderate shower. that's going to be filling in a little more for napa county as well. another spot shower moving across the bay over toward oakland and hayward. that will continue to move off to the east in the next 30 minutes. the rain hit or miss and that's what we'll see as we go throughout the rest of the day. it may rain for a few minutes and then stop and then rain again. for

i want to bring in meteorologist kari hall right now and kari, talk to us about this rain. >> this isbig change from what we had a year ago, a few months ago and even at the start of our rainy season and now no longer a drought over parts of the central sierra where we see the yellow. we're just talking about the colors here because that indicates the status of that drought that's abnormally dry and that's no longer in a moderate drought for the bay area. although we are still seeing moderate drought conditions for lake county, parts of mendocino and napa county and on over toward the sacramento valley and we will most likely see that continue to change as we get more storms coming in. we have another one that's off the coast. this one initially is going to bring us more clouds as we head into today and there is deeper moisture as it moves in for saturday as well as for sunday. so going hour by hour, a couple of more days of the dry conditions and then the rain is back on saturday, first starting in the north bay and then quickly sweeping through the bay area heading into saturday aft

let's bring in meteorologist kari hall right now.tty incredible to see, the start of spring, 13 days away. in tahoe, you would never know it. >> yeah, we do still have a lot more snow on the way. i wanted to show you a comparison what it looked like last year at this time, the average snow depth was only about 14 inches across the sierra. well, compare that to right now, we are now at 192% of our normal sierra snowpack and such a huge difference from last year. the average depth is now 65.2 inches and we, once again, have seen this be a very amazing season. the central sierra snow lab was saying their season average was 580 inches as of today. that's more than 48 feet of snow. can you imagine that? 48 feet of snow has fallen this season. but the all-time record now was in 1951-52, where there was 811 inches of snow. i can't even comprehend that. so we're going to have more snow on the way and hopefully we don't get those kinds of numbers. but as we look at the next week, there will be anywhere from 32 to possibly near 80 inches of sn

meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast today. are we going to see something similar to yesterday weather-wise? >> it's going to be pretty much a repeat but we'll be slightly warmer in some spots. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, we are seeing a few low clouds drifting by. that will be clearing out and tonight there will be a pub crawl happening in san francisco to celebrate st. patrick's day. and if you're going to be out late in the evening, it's going to be chilly, breezy, temperatures in the upper 50s at 6:00, and then heading down to the low 50s the later we go in the evening. tomorrow in dublin there will be a st. patrick's day celebration and it starts out in the morning at about 49 degrees. when it begins, it will be 55 degrees and we will see a mix of sun and clouds. overall it's going to be very mild. rain returns late tomorrow night. i'll have that coming up. >>> mike has a look at slightly slower gas prices. >> even the gas prices on gas buddy, they are in the spirit of st. patrick's day. the best price

kari hall is joining us now. is there a window for people who want to go play in the snow, not just enjoy the water? >> a very small window and it's basically today. there's a new went storm warning for the sierra as well as an area further to the north up around lake county. we're looking at gusts reaching 50 miles an hour through the sierras this weekend and we'll most likely see road closures. if you're going there today, make plans to stay through at least tuesday because there will be off and on snowshowers coming through and then we'll have to reassess and see if you can come back home. looking at what to expect today, we have a chilly start and clouds that will be moving in this afternoon. that's out ahead of that storm system that will bring us off and on rain and low snow levels across the bay area. winter storm warning with one to four feet of snow likely over the sierras. this is what it looks like as we zoom out the view and see where the clouds are. we're starting to see clouds reaching in, but the c
