well, let's get over to meteorologist kari hall. this heat, and that really is a concern because of the dry conditions we have and the wind that we've been seeing. how are things looking today? yes. so many issues that we're tracking with the air quality, the high heat, the low humidity and the wind. so all of that is what we're looking at very closely. and as we start out this morning, it is a clear morning. but you can see that it is hazy and we will have moderate air quality for parts of the south bay, the peninsula, as well as santa clara valley. as we are seeing some of that smoke continuing to move down from redwood city. and there we're looking at temperatures in the mid 50s to start out this morning. nice high humidity, but the sky is clear and temperatures will be warming up quickly. the wind is calm now, but we are expecting the wind at about 10 to 15mph, up to 22mph at 2:00 in san francisco, as well as livermore. and we are going to see those winds in some spots picking up again for this evening, which will increase that

meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking those conditions. first responders are now facing in that area. and kari, i mean, it's tough out there right now. it is tough. i mean, look at how much of the central valley and some of our mountains are included in a red flag warning. that means we'll have low humidity and high wind. those conditions together means that these fires may continue to spread very rapidly. we are seeing some higher humidity and some lighter winds this morning should hopefully help with more containment, but this is such a big issue with so many fires burning across the state. we are, at least for now, getting some pretty good air quality as our temperatures come down and we're getting a breezy wind. but the wind will increase today and a northerly wind tends to be drier. it dries out the vegetation even more and then we're looking at the winds increasing up to 25 to 35mph. these areas in red will be where the fire is gusting the highest as we go throughout today. so as we go into this afternoon, 25 30 mile per hour winds t

i'm kari hall, "nbc bay area."forestation efforts across national forests, it's all in an effort to help restore millions of acres burned and damaged by recent wildfires. "american forests" and the usda forest service have made a $20 million agreement to help organize climate-adapted plans over the next five years. it is called "the replant act," and it will assess, prioritize and plan forestation needs by expanding nursery productions, hiring a larger workforce and increasing seed collection capabilities. and the collaboration is also looking to engage with rural and disadvantaged communities to come up with reforestation plans for each region. this is coming together as part of president biden's bipartisan infrastructure law. i spoke with brian kittler about the partnership. brian kittler: we are partnering to leverage this $20 million investment with private funding and resources from "american forests" and our partners to actually do more reforestation, and do so in a climate-informed way. and what i mean by th

meteorologist kari hall joining us now. and karen, we heard ginger say the conditions last night were good for those firefighters which probably helped get to that 40% containment. what conditions are we looking at today? it's still not bad. i mean, we're still getting mostly calm wind. our highest wind gusts so far is at five miles per hour, but the humidity is dropping that relative humidity that you're seeing. that's how much moisture is within the air. and so we're seeing that we initially had wind gusts 30 to up to 30mph around that area. that caused that fire to spread fairly quickly. but now we're seeing things improve. but we can all see this hazy sky that we have overhead with all of the smoke that's coming in. and this is not necessarily from the point fire. it may be adding to it, but we also have several other fires that are burning across the region into the sacramento valley, as well as another one that is just to the east of clear lake. and so we're seeing all of this smoke coming in, but we are expecting thi

so much, kari.hat breaking news this morning out of oakland, where that fire has ripped through a warehouse. now, here is a live look at that scene. fire crews are still working there. now we know this warehouse belongs to a roofing supply company. it actually sparked around 1015 last night as a rubbish fire outside of the warehouse on wood and 24th street. well, that quickly grew to a three alarm fire. fire crews there had to contain the fire in the main building and actually kept those flames from reaching the yard. people nearby are being advised to close their windows, and this is all due to the smoke in that area. that is a lot of smoke. also new overnight. cal fire quickly got the upper hand on a vegetation fire in the north bay that fire started just before midnight on friesen drive in the unincorporated area of angwin in napa county. the fire only burned three acres, and fire crews were able to stop progress in about 20 minutes. they mopped up the area. the cause is now under investigation.

kari. this is a result of the earlier crash northbound 101 right around. well, between mckee and alum rock. we're told the vehicles have been cleared, but there's still crews on scene. two chp cruisers, and maybe a fire crew as well. so i haven't heard anything about injuries. there must be something going on and no major injuries are reported. but still, that's the one slow section. everything else looks great. so that's good news so far for the rest of the south bay. we still have this overturned tanker filled with salt water eastbound thornton onto northbound 880. that is the specific part of the connector that's blocked. you can loop back from the other side. you see some more slowing. that might be what folks are doing. you can also use central or mallory and the rest of the bay shows a nice easy drive. of course, they're slowing south 880 toward the san mateo bridge, and your typical feeds over toward these bridges as well. back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. 622 this m

meteorologist kari hall tracking just how hot it's going to get. but first, thom jensen is live in tracey, where crews are still working to put out the corral fire. how's it looking there, tom? reporter good morning to both of you. well, it's looking pretty good. the winds have definitely died down even compared to yesterday, and nothing like it was here over the weekend. and we're expecting to hear more good news considering the advancement on the fire that they've made over the firefighters have made over the past couple of days with the winds down like this, the temperatures down, even though they're coming up, we might have 100% containment. there's a fire briefing in the next hour. we hope to attend and get some more information for you on. but there was more evidence of fire danger. late yesterday, a fire broke out along patterson pass road near here, that's a popular one lane winding road between tracee and livermore used by commuters avoiding interstate gridlock. and a grass fire started right along patterson pass road. thanks to higher hum

and i think it has to do with kari lake and the campaign she's running. we saw across the board, not just in arizona, but that voters were picking senate democratic candidates on the issue of abortion more than it was factoring into their vote for president. a lot of voters still don't believe, as you saw where president trump was talking there, that he's emphasizing exceptions, you look at sort of his wobbly positions on the issue before he ran for office and different things that i think you look at lake's past comments on abortion and the stances she took when she ran for governor, and i think this absolutely is a liability for her as a candidate, among other things. she is such a well-defined candidate after her run for governor, and not in a good way. the voters have very strong opinions of her, for or against. this is a race that i think has slipped down republican pick of opportunities, so absolutely in the mix. when i look at the overall senate map, you know, the national and public senatorial committee has come in with ads but we haven't seen the

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect weather wise. i know we've had some warm days. we had some crazy rain yesterday in san jose and then some rain this morning. yeah, so we're seeing another wave of that coming through parts of the bay area. as you're getting up and heading out, we are going to have that possibility of not only some spotty showers, but also some lightning, which may be of high concern due to the high fire danger that lightning produces. but we are definitely milder this morning as you're getting up and heading out in foster city. will be in the mid 60s through 10:00, and then we'll see our temperatures headed for the upper 60s and low 70s. it's going to be another hot day, but when you add in the humidity, it's going to feel much warmer. so martinez we'll see a high of 8566 in san francisco and 83 in san jose. we'll get a look ahead to some slightly lower temperatures coming up. but mike, you're seeing more congestion showing up. yeah, pretty much where we typically predict the slowing for highway 37. but that's comb

meteorologist kari hall has a look at those temperatures. for some people not so beautiful, but yet it could be nice for some. yes, hence our microclimates. we are going to have temperatures ranging about 20 to 30 degrees across the bay area. but we're all dealing with decreased air quality. our air quality outlook today on these hot days when the wind is not moving around as much, and we've had a couple of fires that gets trapped here and we see that impacting with the air that we're breathing in. there's going to be unhealthy air for people who have breathing problems or any heart conditions. you want to limit your time outside the worst of that. and that measure of the particulate matter is in the east bay as well as santa clara valley. here's a look at pleasant hill as you're heading to work. one of the things that we can do to improve our air quality is catching public transit or carpooling, biking to work. we're going to see in pleasant hill as you're heading there to the bart station. it's going to be in the upper 60s. but look at the

kari. thank you.g problem in oakland and fighting it could soon become more difficult. the city of oakland is now considering millions of dollars in cuts as nbc bay area's bob redell reports, this could have a major impact on public safety. the city of oakland could impose a hiring freeze within opd, the police department, which is already operating with a reduced police force and needs more officers on the street as it is, the president of the oakland police officers association fears budget cuts could have a significant impact on the level of service and safety opd can provide. yesterday, oakland mayor sheng thao proposed $63 million in new cuts to balance the city's budget. the mayor announced this resolution to a previous budget proposal, and she made this announcement to meet a mandatory june 30th deadline, which is obviously approaching. and she also made this announcement in case the city isn't able to sell its share of the coliseum property in time, which the mayor has said would help balance

now we will get a look at the forecast with kari in just a moment. but first we want to check in with mike. mike, you've got more on that bart line. yeah. the not a great start to the bart system. we have an alert for folks that it will mean possibly a 20 minute delay for folks who would intend to use that red line. the red line is suspended just like basically over the weekend, but a different reason as far as i can tell. emergency track work between the macarthur and 19th street station results in the red line stopping, but you can use the yellow and the orange lines in combination. you'll transfer over at the macarthur station. those who do take that for the morning commute know the option. there's also ac transit and county connection through the area. it's between macarthur and the 19th stations right over here near the berkeley curve. the rest of the bart system will work, but again, there will be delays because that red line is no longer working. we also have and that's until further notice. we also have two crashes along the east shore freewa

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that storm, and kari i mean, this is one that is moving with no vengeance, with vengeance? yeah, it did produce a lot of rainfall, as we typically see with even just the tropical storm. it has spread out and is continuing to affect mexico. but we are starting to see that rain winding down for texas as they've gotten some flooding and dealt with issues with the storm surge as well. so we are seeing things quieting down with that system. but noaa is forecasting for the atlantic hurricane season to be very active with a 17 to 25 named storms, well above average. we could see 18 to 13 hurricanes and 4 to 7 major hurricanes. so as we look out there now across the bay area, we're getting started with some low clouds and fog. fairly quiet weather here, and we will see the sky clearing today and temperatures warming up and spots like san rafael. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 70s already at 1:00 this afternoon. so we'll take a look at all of our microclimates and what's coming up in just a few minutes. and also we are also going to be track

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect. beautiful day yesterday. it was nice yesterday and will be even better today. we're going to see some cooler temperatures and also some breezy winds with a lot of sunshine. we're getting started this morning at 57 in san jose and 45 in san rafael. taking a look at san francisco and dublin, where we're right now at 52 degrees. well, as we get a look at what to expect for today, we're going to bring it down a couple of more degrees compared to yesterday afternoon. instead of low 80s. we're in the upper 70s for san jose, staying in the 70s through the tri valley and into the north bay. we're looking at temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s, while san francisco will be in the low 60s. tomorrow's our first day of summer, and we're looking at temperatures coming up a degree or two, but still pretty nice. the major heat blasts us this weekend, so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you're tracking a lot of activity in palo alto. yeah, there were lots of lights lined up northbound just for about a minut

kary's got a look at those temperatures for us. yeah, it's going to be a cooler day and we are going to have a pretty nice weekend ahead. here's a live look outside in san francisco. we're going to see that fog rolling in over the next couple of hours and kind of lingering over the next, i'd say 3 to 4 hours and then a little bit more sunshine into the early afternoon. but look at how cool it's going to be today. only a low 60. so we're keeping the jacket on in the city. while as you head down to san mateo, we're going to see a high temperature of 71 degrees 81 in mountain view. and dublin today, up to 80 degrees 84, in san jose. and a lot of these temperatures are right where they should be for this time of year. we'll check out the weekend coming up, mike has a look at where you can fill up for a little bit lower. yeah, i think a lot of places are a little bit lower. not as low as we'd like, but we did drop below four bucks. alameda county, livermore's fox see gasoline on old first street is 3.99 a gallon. so that's great news fo

and kari hall has been tracking this as well.to talk about what that storm is doing now and what it's doing next. yeah, we know that tropical systems, whether they become hurricanes or not, even just a weak tropical system, can pick up a lot of moisture. and you can see all of the rain that's moving into mexico as well as southern texas. we are already seeing some flooding, and we may possibly see a lot more as we go into today as that rain continues. but the storm itself has already made landfall and will continue to bring bands of rain as we go throughout today. this is significant because it is the first tropical storm of the atlantic hurricane season. you can see all of the names on the list, and we are expecting this year to be a fairly active one. so these are the names will most likely start to see over the next several months as hurricane season gets going in the atlantic basin. as we take a live look outside here at home, we are seeing a hazy sky. some low clouds and also a little bit of smoke mixed in. we do have the si

thank you, kari. some important new rulings issued this morning by the u.s. supreme court. but perhaps the most significant case was not among them. and that is whether a president is allowed to break the law. there were verdicts in three other cases you might be familiar with nbc bay area. scott mcgrew goes through those briefs. good morning. we'll start with the january sixth. the justice department has been charging the attackers with interfering with an official government proceeding, which they were. they blocked the vote. that was the point, they said. but one of the suspects in that case, a former police officer, actually challenged the charge, saying that obstruction law prosecutors were using shouldn't apply because the law was designed to prevent people from tampering with evidence. and the court agreed. so it is possible that charge could be dropped in hundreds of cases. now, most of the january sixth attackers have also been charged with some other crime. so for many, this is not a get out of jail free card. the court also significantly weakened the power of fed

so we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall right now. like in regards to winds in this area? carrie yeah, i was just looking at that big plume of smoke going upward. but we know that with fire, it's so intense and hot it can create its own kind of weather system there where we start to see the winds rushing even a little bit more. as you get this pressure gradient that develops in that area. but those gigantic chunks of wood that's coming down is going to be a problem. as of right now, we're just seeing winds at about 15 to 20mph. but in that area where we have those really intense hot flames coming up, that may create a much more of a wind in that area. so watching all of those homes around there, this is video coming in from our scott mcgrew in that area of redwood city. and we can see that even in that one patch of grassy area, those embers that are coming down are creating more spot fires. and that's the reason why they are evacuating people in the area. they're trying to hose it down and keep the ground really moist in that little s
